Name that Bumper!

Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at 11:02 AM

A question that often comes up on this forum is, "What was the song that played when they were coming back from commercial...?" As all hard-core "Loveline" fans know, these transition pieces are called "bumpers".

I have just added a "Bumpers" section to the "Sound" area of this site. (See link below.) This collection is by no means complete; I'll be adding more clips as time goes on.

I invite everyone to play "Name that Bumper!" If you know the name of the song and the artist for a given bumper, simply post a follow-up below.

One song that I have not seen posted here, but that I have heard as bumper music on Loveline, is "Madskillz - Mic Chekka" by BT. They used to play a clip out from that song when going to commercial. Most clips I see posted here are bumpers used when coming back from commercial.

It's time to play "Name that Bumper" again! If you know the name of the song and the artist for a given bumper, simply post a follow-up below.

Note that there is one straggler under "2003": Bumper #23. Engineer Anderson only played this bumper a handful of times (AFAIK) before replacing all the bumpers a few weeks ago.

Seriously Wugie! I found Modest Mouse back in 2000 when 'The Moon and Antartica' had just come out. I went back and bought everything they ever released. 'Lonesome Crowded West' is still my favourite. It's crazy to see them getting all this mainstream air play.

The song is "Float On" and is the single from their album that just came out called "Good News for People Who Love Bad News". more info here:

and you can watch the video of it, VERY cool shit! here:

I'm not sure about that one Marc, but I also notice they've been using "Slither" by Velvet Revolver recently, but not for the closing segment. They started that new closing bumper on the 24th also, but I don't know what song it is.

Speaking of Modest Mouse (from a post about 2 months back), now they've been playing "The Ocean Breathes Salty" off their new album alot too! I got into Modest Mouse about 5 years ago when I picked up their album "The Lonesome Crowded West." Great stuff! "Float On" has been getting a good bit of airplay on 93X in Memphis, and they were playing it all the time on one of the Orlando radio stations (that also played Loveline) when I was down there in late May. I figure this must mean that "Ocean" must be the next single, but they haven't started playing it here yet.

loubat

Monday, July 12, 2004 at 7:28 PM

Last night (and many nights lately) they've been playing "Y Control" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It's off the same album as "Maps", Fever to Tell. That's the only one that I recognized that hasn't alreaady been listed, I think.

Saturday, September 11, 2004 at 2:27 AM

So let's help out the silent virgin and do all the legwork on updating the 'bumper' section so that it would be easy to copy / paste our work over there and update it since she has no time recently and is lagging (rightfully so! work is more important the hobby of loveline).

so, check out the format of the 'bumper' section of the site:

http://www.dolland.net/loveline/sound/bumpers/index.html

what would be killer is for people to go through shows randomly. prob like 1 per month? for all of 2004. just cruise it through and cut / make mp3 snippets of each bumper. you can see a few from 2004 have been made already, but we need to make clips of the recent ones. So maybe upload the clip to the DC+, or just e-mail silent virgin yourself and upload / e-mail it to her.

also when you post your clip post the artist / song name if you know it, or just post the clip and the rest of us will try and match it up.. also any notes regarding the song / relation to loveline should be included.

also, if anyone is too lazy, i'd be happy to go through and cut out the bumper clips myself, just post like 1-2 shows from each month of 2004 to a public downloadable FTP or http site (i still haven't figured out the DC hub) and i'll download / cut / research, etc ...

let's update the 2004 bumpers section! it always is good to keep that up to doate with anderson always bringing in new tunes and all.

thansk for the help!

Has anyone notice that Anderson "happens" to pick bumbers from bands Adam claims to hate? He played Rich Girl and Feel Good Inc. in a row tonight and i wondered if that was a coincidence. Since Adam notoriously hates Damon from the Gorillaz and put a curse on Gwen Stefani, good stuff. one of anderson's favorites to use is the Dead 60's - Riot Radio. I can't remember any more that haven't been mentioned.

Stryker311

Thursday, July 21, 2005 at 2:23 AM

oh and one more band, Carolla has commented that he doesn't like Rivers Cuomo from Weezer, and Anderson always plays the bumper from Perfect Situation by Weezer.

Stryker311

Thursday, July 21, 2005 at 2:25 AM

okay last comment, and sometimes he plays Beverly Hills by Weezer as well. Anderson is just keeping his and Adam's love/hate relationship alive.

Stryker311

Thursday, July 21, 2005 at 9:22 AM

>>one of anderson's favorites to use is the Dead 60's - Riot Radio. I can't remember any more that haven't been mentioned.

That one's been mentioned two or three times, so, technically, you have remembered zero that haven't. I'm not sure if he plays bands Adam dislikes on purpose or not, but he also plays bands Adam likes, such as System of a Down.

Stryker311

Friday, July 22, 2005 at 6:45 PM

*sigh*

I don't have a clip of this one, and this is and old bumper, but...

Its one that has "Tink tonk tink ta ta tink tatata tink...* around the end of the bumper, after they usually start speaking.

Kinda like that. Its an old one, and it's not modest mouse. Guitar before it, I guess. Sorry, can't describe music, and don't know how to get a clip...

It would be awesome if someone knew what I was talking about.

CrusherEAGLE

Friday, July 22, 2005 at 6:51 PM

Sorry Stryker, but I doubt Anderson picks the bumpers. They're basically just recent releases from popular groups that get rotated out every three or four months. If he was picking, I guarantee there'd be a more eclectic mix of songs.

Though I’m sure he does get some delight in finding out that hated bands like Gorillaz and Stefani are in the accepted mix.

So, unless you have something more compelling than "trust me" to back it up, I just don't see it.

Beat It!

oh-for

i was convinced he did, because 1 he always knows who it is (which could mean nothing) 1. he has played bumpers by hot hot heat, and i know that when they came on he was ecstatic. point being, hot hot heat is not a popular or very mainstream band, and kroq doesnt normally play much by them, making it odd that THAT song would be picked. 2. .......ummmm, anderson is a pimp. 3. after writing this and rereading it, i have actually convinced myself that anderson DOES NOT pick the bumpers.....O WAIT, I remember why i was so sure it was him. okay the night 311 was on there, (mid to late 2004) after like 2 commercial breaks creatures (for a while) was used as a bumper. obviously since the song is by 311 and so anderson was paying homage or whatever, since before that, the last time creatures was used, was more than a year ago. so obviously the bumpers arent preset. plus who else other than anderson would sit there the whole time choosing them????? idk, thats what i think

as for CrusherEagle, that is like not enough info at all. at least tell us HOW old, like whens the last time you heard it approximately. but from what you wrote, im not sure, but Holiday by green day seems to fit your description

A new Bumper. Or maybe an old one being revived. Anyway, the one where Adam burped on, then proceeded to talk about Drew stealing his urinal, was Reach for the Sky - Social Distortion. Only saying this because I love this song.

i was wondering about this one bumper that is played. it starts out with a guitar riff and then like three guys go *a dum dum dum dum* or something like that and then the guitar plays the same riff again accompanied with a shaker and some other instrument, i think it might be an accordion. well i don’t know who it’s by but it sounds like system of a down. Please help!

Sort of related, but not totally. I was listening to an old show from June 2003 last night. I knew right away the show open was different, but familiar. For some reason, Anderson had resurrected the old sow open featuring the "I'm not modeling anymore for the two of you!" drop. It took me right back to my college days. Good times.

Probably Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Zephyr Song, as documented in this September 2002 show entry.

For the record, the closing song on the Nicole Sullivan show (you can hear it better in the 4-19 show) is called Sometimes by the group Ours.

Though the closing song from the March episodes is different. It's Linkin Park though I can't think of the name off hand.

rape is a myth. if someone says they've been raped, they're either lying or it's code for a bird pooped on my shoulder.
