I thought about changing my voter registration from Democrat to Republican today (you need to be one or the other to vote in Colorado primaries). I guess I'm basically not a Republican for a few reasons:
- I'm pro-choice
- I'm for same-sex marriage
- I'm for affirmative action (on the grounds of skin color, ethnicity and class)
- I'm for universal health care (especially single payer)
- I'm for welfare and other social safety nets
- I'm for funding programs for the arts and scientific R&D endeavors
- I'm for free or low cost access to post-secondary education for everyone
- I'm for a strong national defense, but I feel like money on it is not being spent wisely
- I don't like Republican connections to the religious right, and the political favors they do for their ideological causes.
- John McCain is faggot for trying ban MMA.
- I recycle (usually)
But I'm tempted to register as one today because:
- Feminism is fucked up, and it's really starting to piss me off
- I support the second amendment, and guns are cool
- WTF Obama, why no space program? I want to see a Bussard Ramjet or something as cool in my lifetime.
- Maybe I'd be a good example for some Republicans?
- Maybe I could be a positive influence in the primaries?
I thought about registering as a Libertarian before but didn't because:
- I'm a "liberal interventionist" in terms military actions like in Bosnia, Iraq and Libya (they just seem to work better when Democrats are president)
- I believe in a parsimonious government, not a small government -- and they're very very very different concepts.
- I like some things about Ayn Rand, but would never join her cult
- The Libertarian Party is an infighting clusterfuck.
- I couldn't vote in the primaries
