it's about time we had a new one.
i just went to the midnight showing of inglorious basterds. it was pretty good. it was bloody, which i assumed it would be, but it wasn't as bad as i expected. there were a lot of great moments and shots. it wasn't my favorite movie ever, but i liked it a lot. i think this was christoph waltz's first american film and he was really great. i've been referring to him as the german john malkovich. brad pitt is good too. he's best when he gets to be really broad and ridiculous. i think you guys would like it. it's a fun movie.

500 Days of Summer
in addition to just being a good movie it resonated quite a bit with me
strongly recommend it
Friday, August 21, 2009 at 11:48 AM
Ditto what ano said re: 500 Days of Summer.
However, Paper Heart was 10x better, and twice as enjoyable.

i've been compulsively watching law and order the last three months.

come to chicago and hang out with us and watch law and order!
i really want to see paper heart.

I am watching the movie "Push". It is good so far. Geesh, Fanning is about 15 now.
I didn't think I liked action movies...

im soo stoked for inglourious bastards! seeing it tomorrow night, as well as (500) days of summer, which order should i see them in? we'll probably be stoned for the first one
Friday, August 21, 2009 at 9:36 PM
push was good. that was dakota fanning? god damn, i cant believe she's that old already. those asian guys who screamed in the movie were really funny and bizarre

Yeah, when she swore, I was like, watch it little girl.
The screaming power seemed bizzare. I love the push/watch powers.
Imagine if a stoner had those powers: "You are going to legalize weed, right now".

Heya!
District 9- It was good in many ways. The acting and the special effects didn't look like special effects. They were used well, and in creative ways and were nearing the point of being seamless. The acting from some of the cast especially Copley was reallly good. Unfortunately the story itself was a bit weak at times. There were some glaring plotholes. I'll not be going to see this again. May be ok to rent some time, if that.

I don't think you should watch inglorious basterds stoned. Sure it has blood and violence but they're used sparingly. I would say that most of the film contains Tarantino's signature lengthy dialogues and they are great in this movie.
I mentally made this list after coming out of the theater
from best to worst-
jackie brown
pulp fiction
reservoir dogs
inglorious basterds
kill bill
death proof
i like making lists
Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 5:03 PM
i agree w/ death proof in last place, not as fond of jackie brown.
Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 11:00 PM
hamlet 2- i had wanted to see it for awhile, but kept putting it off for some reason. i love steve coogan. like, i've wanted to fuck him forever. the play itself was great. i watched it with 2 of my roommates and it made us want to put on a ridiculous play. but, the rest was kind of meh. i generally love stuff mocking theater people, but it was just alright.

Jackie Brown is in 2nd to last for me. Though it has some nice moments, it really plods along and Pam Grier doesn't do it for me...she absolutely sucks in the L Word (not that anyone is good in that show).
Sunday, August 23, 2009 at 1:53 AM
her blaxplotation films are luv. and yeah, no one on the L word is tolerable acting-wise.
hamlet 2 was nuts but funny.

saw the goods instead of (500), then saw basterds, and didn't end up smoking. yea basterds would have been weird, high.
the goods was good, but not super good.
basterds was great. the subtitles were a bit of a pain, though i only had to read the french translations, obviously. i totally agree with your list, hocus, minus jackie brown and kill bill, as i've not seen them. better yet i saw it with a few of my jew buddies, so we all thoroughly enjoyed watching them kick nazi ass.
was it just me or was BJ sort of a bad choice?
lol 000, did u take that pic yourself?

I found DeathProof intolerable. I rented it once and barely made it past the the first 10 minutes of those "cool" chicks and their dialogue. Reminded me too much of "cool" chicks irl. I tried watching it on Netflix a second time and could only get about 20 minutes into it.
I wouldn't mind seeing Reservoir Dogs/Pulp Fiction vying for the top spots and Kill Bill and Jackie Brown somewhere in the next 2 spots.

Perhaps but the trailers kinda make me want to ralph; I'm not sure I could quite bring myself to go see it.
I just watched Brüno - maybe my expectations were just too low but I really enjoyed it and didn't find the penis shots to be that excessive (especially in contrast to the protracted naked bear man running around hotel from Borat).
Also for whatever it's worth my german roommate and friends said that Sacha's accent (both in english and german) was damned good; not quite but nearly authentic.
Was supposed to see District 9 on friday but that ended in a horrible abortion; think I'll probably just wait till it comes out on DVD and Netflix it.
Very excited for Inglourious Basterds (that was supposed to be tonight but other things got in the way; hopefully in the next few days though).

There are too many Nazi movies and Brad Pitt movies. Hollywood needs to take a 25 year break from both of them.

In addition to that though I kept hearing that it was going to be something like 15 minutes of full frontal male nudity so I was actually pleased when it was closer to just ~30 seconds of averting my eyes.
Monday, August 24, 2009 at 8:40 AM
Ano was pleased at seeing 30 seconds of the cock.
Monday, August 24, 2009 at 9:17 AM
The most amusing thing about it is that some drunk hoochie was trying to talk my roommate and guest into showing her "the helicopter" a mere couple of hours before we had the joy of seeing Borat doing the helicopter.

i convinced my roommate that she would love the show spaced, so we spent most of yesterday watching the whole series, which i hadn't seen in about 2 years. i totally re-fell in love with simon pegg. that love has slightly dwindled since then because i found out that he's such good friends with coldplay and shit. but my lesbo crush on jessica stevenson will always remain.

I was watching the office on hulu and there was this advertisement for Joel McCale's show 'comnunity' and he said "Some people say commuity college is like highschool with ashtrays"
Now did Joel steal that line or was it his to begin with?
Friday, August 28, 2009 at 10:45 PM
Does it really count as stolen? He did say "some people say," not "I said" or something like that. I mean, he didn't claim that people saying that was his idea and technically someone did actually say it. Right?
Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 10:45 AM
Yeah, but it's like the word of the law and the spirit of the law.
He used that to jump into his own joke about that idea, though, so he made it his own.
Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 10:59 AM

I can't believe how much of a douchebag that guy comes across as. He used to be the bright and shiny/happy Joel McHale on TACS. Then when Adam switched to PODCAST and Adam had Joel as a guest, it was gruesome. Joel just fell apart. Then, later when Adam had him again on the PODCAST episode where they did the cookout with chef Adam Perry, Joel was interrupting everyone completely/constantly and eventually ended up getting yelled like an idiot for it, on camera. ROFL.
---------
Inglourious Bastards - Wow. Fucking brilliant. The German/French actors introduced me to a level acting I didn't even know existed. Obviously Waltz was magnificent, but the guy playing Zoller and the guy playing Hellstrom were both electric. Hellstrom especially. The American actors were buffoons, except Myers. Pitt looked like he is afflicted with something. You can't even keep the camera on him for more than 11 seconds anymore or he will crack.

or it could be that Adam heard that ages ago and was repeating it for Loveline. Joel doesn't seem to need to steal from others to be funny.

Edited Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 11:06 AM
I doubt Adam heard it somewhere. He has generated 1000's of original jokes, so why would anyone assume he didn't make up that one. Especially since his mother went to Junior College and its a big reason for why he has a vendetta against Junior College.
Besides, Joel said "some people say...." which sounds like he is referring to Adam, without mentioning him, and without necessarily stealing Adams joke.

and I'm not disputing this, but he's repeated other "jokes" too. I'm not assuming he didn't make it up, but it is a possibility.
BTW--I don't have time to research it completely, but it looks like "College is like high school with ashtrays" is a line in She's Having a Baby (circa 1988).
edit: this was just confirmed by my John Hughes obsessed spouse. Why do you people ever doubt me or my instincts at this point?
edit 2: Twice Confirmed. Leave this stuff up to the research professionals kids.
Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 12:09 PM
Original or not, it seems like one of those things like a Carlos Mencia joke that is just so obvious that many people will arrive independently at it.
Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 12:18 PM
Nice work, Bguirk.
This moment seems to me like a good time to raise my question. Why do people look at passing jokes on, as stealing them? "Woahh, waohhh, not so fast there bub, you trying to take credit for that without properly citing it??"
But not with stories. Stories are passed down from generation to generation and from group to group. Thats how the stories stay alive. Why isn't exactly the same with jokes?
Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 12:31 PM
i love joel mchale and he has never come across as a douchebag. that is fact.

Edited Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 12:37 PM
That's because you are a woman, which causes you to have trouble seeing him as he is. Watch the cookout, he asks a person a question and instead of listening, only seems to worry about prepping a follow up question while the other person is still speaking. If the other person is lucky they can finish their sentence before he comes crashing in with whatever he's about to say.
Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 2:45 PM
In a way, using someone else's joke is a compliment. Plus, it happens all the time.
Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 3:29 PM
idk, adam spent ten years making funny observations broadcast to millions of people. it's natural some are going to repeat the wittier things but if it's another famous person or a watered down version used on some dumb sitcom, in adam's case i think he could use the credit.

I had this great idea about paying people to live inside malls. It would be like...a small house within a mall. The walls would be just like the cop mirrors they use. You can see in but they can't see out. You get to hear everything they're saying and doing. You can see everything except what happens in the bathrooms. The people would be paid well and there would be plenty of people wanting the gig.
It would be like a zoo exhibit. People could watch other people live in their natural habitat.
A few months after my idea, Big Brother came along on CBS. Kind of similar to my silly house/zoo in the mall idea.

well there's that and the ashtrays thing is far from the funniest thing Adam ever said about Jr. College. If Joel (and let's be real here--Joel's writer) uses someone else's joke as a jumping off point for another joke and even references that it's not their joke, that is a nod, not a theft. Since Joel and Adam are compadres I'd say that it was a nice nod towards Adam and that Adam inadvertently ripped off an old movie. No harm no foul.

When I was in middle (or possibly elementary) school, I remember thinking it'd be cool if this was a sitcom...only real...but not REALLY real...but mostly real. Between ten and fifteen years later, FOX came out with this show called Yearbook, which was cinema verite verete varite cameras documenting the happenings amongst a real high school class (Glenbard West (Illinois) High School, class of '91).

Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist:
*Nick would've fucked the hot chick with the nice ass dancing in front of his car.
*Michael Cera isn't shaking a first orgasm out of anyone.
*The dumped guy would've banged the girl who randomly kissed him in a club within 20 seconds of finding out she liked him.
*I also hate the cop out where everyone else is a crazy caricature and the two leads are the only people resembling actual people.

Inglorious Basterds
I enjoyed it... although not nearly as much as I was expecting to (not sure if that was because it didn't live up to the hype or just because I went with a Russian and a German who kinda poo-pooed it and Summer Finn and her new boyfriend)
Lots of very well done parts but somehow just didn't quite come together as a cohesive whole for me.
Still, I'd recommend it overall.

Godard's attempt at mixing genres. Visually stylish. Has the feelings of a film noir, sci-fi, new wave, etc... but nothing to keep the viewers interested.

Phoenix to Heathrow
- Terminator Salvation
Actually worse than you'd probably imagine. I'd suppose it's worth seeing if you hate yourself and you've already seen every movie ever made, but otherwise skip it.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Eh... it's /OK/. Some things were kinda cool and fun to watch. Decent enough for what it is. Definitely better than X-Men III (not that that's saying a whole hell of a lot). If you're on the fence, I'd watch it... but don't go in with very high expectations unless you want to be disappointed.
Heathrow to Phoenix
- Vicky Christina Barcelona
Was kinda amusing because I was just in Barcelona a few days before I watched it... OK if you're into super contrived bullshit but otherwise very skipable.
- Angels & Demons
Oh my god the physics were crappy. Horribly contrived story. Totally obvious ending. Huge flaming turd. Few redeeming qualities. Avoid like the plague.
- Fargo
I've never seen it before because although everyone told me it was awesome whenever I'd start it the pacing seemed so painfully slow that I couldn't get much past the first few minutes. It's actually very good but given the pacing it's probably better on a quaalude. Enjoyed it but don't expect I'll ever watch it again. Very marginally recommend seeing it if you haven't already.
- The Simpson's Movie
Meh. It was... OK. Maybe if I was more into the Simpsons I would have dug it more but really, if there are other options it's kind of a waste. Has a super trite / obvious moral that they hit you over the head with. A bunch of random shit happens but it really doesn't go anywhere. Wouldn't really recommend it.
Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 10:53 AM
Ano!
Yeah, I thought the same thing with the simpsons. I did laugh, though, which I rarely do with film/T.V.

He liked White Chicks starring the Wayans Bros. 'nuff said.
(Besides that, there's already quite a few films in this thread he said he liked.)
Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 12:14 PM
True though just to be clear - I wouldn't say by any means that White Chicks was a good movie, merely that I enjoy watching it; by any reasonable metric, Fargo is a far better and smarter movie than White Chicks, but if I had to watch one of the two, I'd pick White Chicks over Fargo in a hummingbird's heartbeat.
Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 2:28 PM
The fact that you'd pick White Chicks over anything is astounding for a guy of your intellect.
Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 7:21 PM
I've never seen either one, but based purely on what I've heard about them, I'd pick Fargo as well.

I just don't trust those Coen brothers. How can anyone make that awful remake of The Ladykillers and also make The Big Lebowski?

Sunday, November 8, 2009 at 12:13 AM
I have like 30 DVDs, 5 or so Blu Rays, and 2 VHS, just The Nightmare BFC, and Alice in Wonderland. No VCR though, did away with that piece of crap.

i own 3 dvd players, but they're for computers, not stand alone.
still have a shit ton of vcr tapes i don't watch. can't bring myself to convert them or throw them away.
i have almost all the beavis and butt-head episodes taped from MTV in the 90's, so they still have the music videos.
i really ought to digitize those before the tape goes to shit.
i didn't own a single dvd until a month ago when an ex-girlfriend gave me a gift she bought for me like 4 years ago, but never got around to delivering. so, i'm now the proud owner of the MTV drama "my so called life." a young claire danes. oh, yeah.
you can see how important movies and television are to me.

i have about 150 DVDs. i was making a lot of money in 2003, 2004 and i'd hit up the $10 bin at k-mart all too frequently.
Sunday, November 8, 2009 at 12:40 PM
I haven't purchased a DVD in years. thanks netflix/local library/internet.
Sunday, November 8, 2009 at 12:46 PM
i'd definitely trade them for my $1,500 back.
Sunday, November 8, 2009 at 12:53 PM
"back when I was your age..." we didn't have no netflix or DVD's. If you wanted director's commentary you bought laserdiscs for 35.95 a pop and you liked it. I probably dropped $1500 on those back in the day. I donated my player and my box of LD's to a youth hostel in 2006 and wrote them off at near full retail. Oh the joys of federal itemizing.
Sunday, November 8, 2009 at 6:33 PM
>>on the subject of movies and shit, how many of you still own vhs tapes and vcr's?
I have tons of VHS tapes still, but I haven't watched them since I was a kid. I don't have a DVD player, but I only have about 10 DVDs - two were gifts and the rest I got for free. I don't ever re-watch movies, though.
I still use my VCR to tape and watch TV every day. No point in paying for cable just so I can get a DVR.
Sunday, November 8, 2009 at 7:36 PM
You don't re-watch movies? Not even after a long time?
Sunday, November 8, 2009 at 7:45 PM
I could understand the book thing, but if I see a movie I really like, I watch it again, after enough time has passed for me to forget some things.

back in the laserdisc days to ways done usually only for good films made by interesting directors who had something to say. Now it's just sort of expected. Weekend at Bernies would get a director's commentary.
one of my favorite commentary tracks is the Kevin Smith/Scott Mosier track on Roadhouse--a film they didn't direct.

I believe that, having enjoyed the commentary to Futurama (same bunch).
Also, the commentary from Family Guy was fairly enjoyable, as was that of South Park (but probably that one is mostly because it's so short).

Yeah, he seems cool as shit. I kinda wish I'd introduced myself to him on one of the occasions he attended shows I worked on, or at least the time we crossed paths at the grocery store. Incidentally, my dad read for him for the lead in Polyester. John liked his reading, but dad (among other reasons, I'm sure), at 5'11" wasn't tall enough to play opposite Divine (which was fine with my dad, as he was old school and a tad squeamish regarding 'alternate' types).

Justice : A Cross the Universe
this review pretty much described how I feel about this quasi-documentary:
"I'm not the biggest Justice fan--in fact, I'm not much of a fan at all since I rated their only album a 2.5. With that being said, A Cross the Universe might be the most fascinating, hilarious, and disturbing tour doc I've ever seen. Whatever view you have of the band will be completely distorted once you see them living their post-Behind the Music rock star lives. One night they are bashing in a fans head in with a glass bottle, another they are getting raided by the cops at a diner, and another they are dosing a fan in vodka and threatening to lit them on fire because they are annoying them. These guys are living the rock star cliche in the most post-modern way imaginable. I find it hard to applaud such behavior, but there is a thrill in seeing how genuinely bad ass they can be (just check out that MJ dance--flawless!) Even better is their crew which consists of their psychotic tour manager carrying a gun in plain sight wherever he goes because "HEY MAN THIS ISN'T A MOVIE THIS IS REAL LIFE!" and their bus driver who contrasts the band so hilariously with his calm, collected deep, deep voice (that can hit the deepest note according the Guinness Book of World Records). The real genius of the film is how it's cut. You see so many incredibly bizarre and fucked up scenes that aren't fully exposed or explained. Some old lady walking down the road keeps falling on her face in the middle of the street ("She wanted to know where a good place to die is", the bus driver explains before we are taken back to the band's live show). A Cross the Universe is one of the most destructive, joyful exhibits of rock star life captured on celluloid, which might not be to everyone's taste but it's fun to see people living the Entourage life outside HBO."

Bad choice. Tarantino hasn't released any director's commentaries. The one he does with Rodriguez for From Dusk Till Dawn is fun. Also ironic point about Lynch because he makes movies so cryptic that they don't speak for themselves, although his motivation for that is also why he can't comment on them.
My favourite commentaries are the ones for Orange County and Seabiscuit.
Memories of a Killer
the Korean Zodiac. David Fincher must have watched this before making that movie.

i didn't say "his commentaries"... but even if it's parallel to, rather than concurrently over the film, if it's hours of talk about "the making of" released with the dvd, it's a commentary.
Also ironic point about Lynch because he makes movies so cryptic that they don't speak for themselves
something [especially a form of art] can't be cryptic and speak for itself? in that case we'll need to get you a full-time translator. i'm [guessing] you mean lynch declines giving a commentary because it would remove some of the motivation for viewers to interpret the movies themselves, and while that's probably part of the reason, there's something to be said for wanting the film to be received as it was created, without viewers being occupied with the director's thoughts and behind the scenes details.

jfk was really good, but i'd waited so long before seeing it that it wasn't as intense as i thought it'd be but still really creepy with all the "suicides" that went on. the book/theory it's based on is pretty far fetched, but not really any more so than the official govt. explanation. it's been 26 years since he was assassinated a week from sunday. the film talked about how uncovering any conspiracy has to happen in the future when the documents are unsealed - but even with them unsealed things were "lost" and destroyed and as time passes and everyone involved dies its even less likely.

why do some drug addicts hide their drugs in various locations [car, closet, different clothes/etc] and some keep them all together in a box or something?
i was assuming the multiple locations was paranoa, but now i'm not sure.
Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 4:42 AM
Edited Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 4:47 AM
because most drug users are unorganized retards and/or must hide their shit for reasons such as other crack heads finding their stash, or sober people finding and flushing.
those on meth are so paranoid they're convinced others are looking for their shit.
cracks me up when alcoholics are living with non alcoholics, and they hide bottles all over the house.
Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 1:11 PM
sort of interesting that one drug produces the shame and the other paranoia. coming from a catholic background I'm pretty good with the shame--I'd make a great alcoholic. where's my bourbon?
my only experience with paranoia was when I was "living" in a shitty downtown apartment with borderline homeless folk. the paranoia felt justified.
Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 4:35 PM
i was assuming the multiple locations was paranoa, but now i'm not sure.
I've only known one person like that. he had to hide it from his parents, who searched his room, so whenever he would buy weed or alcohol he would break it up and hide it in different locations so that if they found one, he'd only lose a portion of his stash.
danny bonaduci used to mention how after he became sober he would still find bottles months and months later, hidden all over the house. I had always though winos hid full bottles, but at some point i realized he was talking about empty ones. he said he couldn't throw them away because his family might see it in the recycling, so he'd had to hide it somewhere. i had to do that once or twice to hide beer from my parents in high school, but i wasn't so out of it that i couldn't remember to throw it out on trash day

None of these are new, but I started hanging out with the thanksgiving chick a ton and she loves to watch movies and cuddle, so far we've watched
(in this order)
Pride and Prejudice
Enchanted
Pride and Prejudice
Mulan
The Goonies
Pride and Prejudice
THe Outsiders
Pride and Prejudice (with commentary)
Tristan and Isolde
Yeah she's slowly turning me gay. Not my exact perfect crop of movies, but most of them weren't bad, and I just have to say, Pride and Prejudice is a remarkably great movie, I didn't even mind watching it 4 times in 6 days, no joke, it's really adorable, and a great love story, I love mr darcy and mr bingley they are so funny. The cinematography is incredible, especially in the second ball scene, it flows so well, never focusing on one central character, also the part where Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy are dancing and all of a sudden they stop talking and everyone in the entire room disappears except them is amazing, like wow.
I had never seen the Goonies before, and man is chunk fucking funny. Also it's so weird, this AND the Outsiders are both rated PG, are you fucking kidding me? The Hammer was 1000x less potentially scarring than The Outsiders, and it's 2 film grades above it at "R". Even the Goonies, they say "shit" at least 10x.
But anyway I've heard 3 people tell me I look like I should be a greaser from the outsiders, and so I finally watched it, and I guess? I don't grease my hair, idk. It was funny to see Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Esteves, Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe AND Matt Dillon all young.
Typically I won't stand for watching so many chick flicks, but she lets me rub her perfect boobs as much as I want during them and it makes it worth it to sit through the nurse guy from Grey's Anatomy romancing a fake princess bitch. Plus wtf was up with that dragon scene at the end? whatever I'm in love with this girl's rack.

Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 4:13 PM

I wind up showing my boyfriend about 10 movies a year (we alternate who picks the movie, and sometimes toss in a "neutral" one that neither one of us have seen). After 44 movies, I still have a few left on the list (I don't watch many anymore so hardly anything ever gets added), and I don't think I'll ever sink to the level of re-watching anything.
Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 4:36 PM
Is this a list of movies you've watched together? You know the exact number?
Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 5:16 PM
Edited Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 6:02 PM
No, 44 is the number of movies I've shown him. I have them all saved in a text file, and I just counted.
Since I also have a list of all the movies I've ever seen (689), I was able to go through and figure out how many we've actually watched together. I put the estimate of "our" movies at 88, but we have a rule that a series only counts as one movie, in terms of showing a movie. Unfortunately, I didn't have any series' I wanted to show him, but he likes tons of that crap, so he's gotten to show me 84(!) movies, which puts "our" total at 128.
Then, I estimated 20 for neutral, but it's actually been 36. I figured he's paid for me to see 20-30 in theaters (I refuse to pay for it but he likes to have me there), and that estimate was at least close, because the actual number is 31.
I always get to pick like 5 for my birthday that I've never seen before and we watch them all; it's a little foggy for me which ones those were, but I'm thinking 14 of them were birthday movies. And we just happened to watch one movie together while we were somewhere else. So, that brings the grand total of movies we've seen together to: 210.
And just to round out the statistics, there are exactly 22 left on the list of ones I want to show him. He owns hundreds and basically loves everything, so who knows how long we could go on just watching his.
I should really find a way to profit from my love of record-keeping.

That's the best phrasing I've seen for your Pillar of Salt attitude towards movies, but I still would be sad if I could never watch a movie more than once.
Alice in Wonderland (2010)
I've only seen two trailers for this movie but come on, it's Hollywood, there are no hidden depths, so I'm reviewing this like I've already seen it... because I'm not going to torture myself by actually seeing it.
Okay, starring a girl from Canberra born the same month as my youngest brother... weird... this film looks like it could be sweet.
But...
It is American McGee's Alice (AMA) plagiarism, like I feared it would be, and even cheeky enough to steal from Pan's Labyrinth, which didn't exist when AMA came out, mixed with typical infuriating Johnny Hollywood nonsense with a particular focus on Tim Burton cliches. That's it, I'm done with Tim Burton, Planet of the Apes to this movie and everything inbetween, he has nothing left.
another abortive review, why not
Knocked Up
What the fuck is this shit here? I have never seen a comedy this bad outside of a local film festival. I can't believe anyone bothered to give these clowns a professional crew to film their watered down "outrageous" takes on life.
I think I lasted 10 minutes. Fucking awful. I haven't turned a film off without finishing since School of Rock. Fuck, even Troy and Titanic only got the fast forward treatment. Anyone who likes this movie should have to fight Ogami Itto. I've been watching those again, how can a fat man be so sexy?
Okay, anyone who likes this movie should be, uh, sterilised, tortured, nuked, something bad. Empty backwards world.

The Hammer was 1000x less potentially scarring than The Outsiders, and it's 2 film grades above it at "R". Even the Goonies, they say "shit" at least 10x.
They didn't have PG-13 back then, and the standards were a bit different.
YEAH they were. airplane! had full-on tits. for a good 3 or 4 seconds, bam, there they were.
that movie was PG.

speaking of barely warmed over Adam rants, I saw hangover tips on my local news tonight. The hook for this year is that people on twitter are sending out tips to each other, but we should really listen to the expert's tips which are (brace yourself):
1. eat a big meal
2. have several non-alcoholic drinks throughout the night.
3. drink plenty of water.

i don't like numbers and stats to the extent she does, but i have had similar obsessions with numbers (baseball stats mostly), so i know where she's coming from.
from 1999 to 2003, i kept a spreadsheet breaking down every penny i spent or earned, and was super diligent about it.
i stopped after coming to the conclusion that i was doing nothing with this information, and it was serving me no purpose other to underline what i already knew: i earn more than i spend every month consistently, and spend quite judiciously.

>>the fuck?
Alright, let's start over:
>>Is this a list of movies you've watched together? You know the exact number?
I didn't know the exact number, but I do have a list of every movie I've ever watched, and a separate list of every movie I've ever shown my boyfriend (that's what the 44 was), from which I was able to deduce that my boyfriend and I have watched 210 movies together.
>>from 1999 to 2003, i kept a spreadsheet breaking down every penny i spent or earned, and was super diligent about it.
I started doing that in February. Now I have averages for every category for practically a whole year. It's beautiful. I like to be able to project whether or not my savings will last until I get a captioning job.

Bad choice. Tarantino hasn't released any director's commentaries. The one he does with Rodriguez for From Dusk Till Dawn is fun.
Yes, he has. What?
Also it's so weird, this AND the Outsiders are both rated PG, are you fucking kidding me? Even the Goonies, they say "shit" at least 10x.
The fuck word was allowed in PG movies too. Despite all the bitching over how corrupted they are now it was a lot laxer then.

Okay, that's pretty cool I guess, I mean I guess it's nice to have that, if you were ever gonna make a scrapbook (ya rite) you could like make a theatrical design on the page and then list all the movies you've watched together in a crafty way. As long as the titles aren't like "Plasma Sucking Elves 3, The Rerising"
Friday, December 18, 2009 at 4:06 PM
stella huh? i said that in november and you already answered back then.
I would like to be wrong about this. Which of his directed movies has he done commentary for? We have official copies of all his movies, the only one with anything is Reservoir Dogs, which has an interview commentary (tacked together from interviews done with several cast and crew, none of whom were watching the movie at the time).
If he has done some, I'd like to hear them.
and guys, the ratings rules are simple. mainstream hollywood gets preferential treatment. if you're independent, foreign, or in any other way subversive to profit margins, you get a comically exaggerated rating. 8 Femmes, yes please, restrict me!

^ I would if they didn't have the trite Pocahontas storyline.
The X-Files - Our Town
I have to admit- the first half of the second season is pretty cheesy. This is one of the better ones of the second half. Sure it's not as scary as Home, but I remember watching this when I was like 11 or 12 and it haunted me for quite awhile. The part where the girl's body sank into the chicken feed grinder was the most memorable. I did not remember the heads in the wardrobe though.

I'm apparently going to have to eat my words on avatar. I'm definitely not seeing it, but I've been screaming for a few months now about how it's potentially the worst way to spend 300 million dollars because it's such a niche demographic that it will appeal to. I was under the impression this was the big big screen version of the stupid kids game/television show/whatever This one, and that only the kids who were remotely interested in that would go see it. Apparently this is an original film, original premise, not based on anything, so...guess I was wrong. I still think it'll likely flop, or at the very least not make up its budget money, but whatever.

it's directed by James Cameron. The last film he made, 12 years ago was Titanic, and it earned 1.8 billion. 300 million is a safe investment. (though I heard it was more like 500 mil)

Not talking about the history, I was talking about the same [modern] context. You said "modernly it's a self published tome", but they're put out by publishing companies like any other book, too.
Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at 12:29 AM
. You said "modernly it's a self published tome", but they're put out by publishing companies like any other book, too.
OK--yes by a very strict publishing definition they can be put out by a publisher in the same way that I can put $300 together and go down to the Roseland and tell everyone I'm the A & R guy for bguirk records and put out someone's show on the internet under my label with some signed documents from NOLO Legal and that band can say they're signed to bguirk records. It's about as close to self publishing as you get. I consider chapbooks (meaning I ignore the e-mail because I tend not to be qualified as a selector) that come from historical societies around the country or poetry or whatever and yes technically they come from a publisher--but it's not like it's "Running Creek Press, an imprint of Houghton Mifflin". These are vanity projects or more often labors of love. You'd have better business sense panning for gold or buying lotto tickets than publishing this work. If you can play the Kevin Bacon game from this list or any chapbook publishers and can get to a major publisher (other than an academic) I'll grant the point, but I don't think calling them "published" is apropriate. I wouldn't consider myself an honest to god published writer if 35 copies of my book were sent to the local library system and the other 8 were bought by acquaintances and family members. This is small personal work for a small audience--which More often than not when I'm dealing with this it's the writer coming to me directly because I happen to be sitting there and they're trying to get us to purchase their work.
Now that said, there's a whole arts & crafts movement to the subject where "very special editions" of famous authors work are published this way using the finest materials/binding....but I'm sure everyone stopped reading 230 characters ago.

Avatar - a superposition of awesome and awful.
As I'm sure you've heard, the story is pretty much canned and there are scenes that are just about directly lifted from Braveheart and Dances With Wolves and The Last of the Mohicans and The Diamond Age, just to name a few.
All of the exotic wildlife on Pandora, including the Na'vi are basically either modern or slightly prehistoric plants and animals with some small tweaks. It's a huge shame too because they were really limited only to their imagination. Make all the arguments you want about convergent evolution, it's just sad when you can literally do anything and the best you can come up are horses with six legs, pterosaurs and what might as well be people in costumes.
That said - it is visually amazing and there are at least a few moving scenes (if you set the bar for being moved low enough as I do). When the inevitable Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi come out, I'll definitely be back.
If/when you see it, do yourself a huge favor and see it in Imax 3D - it is /soooo/ worth it and you won't be disappointed (at least visually).
Food Inc. - slightly above average but worth seeing.
I already feel guilty enough when I'm eating meat without having seen this and seeing how awful factory farms are really hammers it home to the extent that although I wouldn't/couldn't go full veg, I'm at least going to start making more of an effort to eat meat that comes from animals that are treated somewhat better.
There is a distracting and for me very annoying thread with a mom whose child died of hemorrhagic E. coli making a pathetic appeal that, at least for me, distracted and detracted a lot from the very valid points of the rest of the film. That she lost her kid is all very sad but it is such a gross anomaly and the circumstances and treatment that she describes so unusual that it was either just very bad luck in a crapshoot that he died or it was as much laughably improper medical care as the fault of the food industry. Maybe I'm just overly cynical but for me that sort of thing, like Michael Moore's "lets drag the paralyzed kid into the K-Mart corporate headquarters without an appointment" do so much more harm than good and hamstring the otherwise compelling points made by the films.
Still, if you look past that, the movie has a lot of compelling and interesting stuff in it and even if most of it doesn't come as a surprise to you, it is probably worth being reminded of from time to time.
Super High Me - painfully unfunny and uninteresting
In the interest of honesty I have to say that I couldn't get through the first ~10-15 minutes. Doug just doesn't do it for me comedically (and I have a very low threshold for funny so that is saying a lot). Maybe I just don't get it with him but I can easily think of half a dozen people I know in real life who don't fancy themselves comedians yet who are still far funnier than he is. That he can make a living baffles me in the same way as Jeff Dunham's popularity in the heartland (and Achmed is actually funnier than what I've seen and heard from Doug, which is somewhat like saying that he is less interesting than watching paint dry).
It doesn't help that Doug completely blows off the tests which could have been the one mildly semi-compelling thing in the movie rendering it completely worthless.
Maybe it improves dramatically half way through when he starts getting baked for 30 days. Even if that is the case, that it was edited and produced so badly as to make the first quarter of the movie unwatchable should be condemnation enough. Don't even consider watching it unless you are so high that watching flies fuck in various positions for an hour and a half would amuse you (and probably not even then).

I really don't think they should've gone with the giant graphic image of a double mastectomy for the breast cancer awareness Snuggie, but this is why I'm not in marketing.

Harry Potter drinking game?
Monday, January 4, 2010 at 6:34 PM
everyone has to take a drink whenever it's mentioned that Hogwarts has become a dangerous place for Harry. to' up from the flo' up, yo
Monday, January 4, 2010 at 6:43 PM
or whenever hermione says that she found the answer to whatever was plaguing the school in "hogwarts, a history"
Monday, January 4, 2010 at 6:46 PM
or anytime Neville is onscreen.
Monday, January 4, 2010 at 6:52 PM
lol i googled "harry potter drinking games" on the family computer downstairs and the number one link was purple because it had been recently clicked. i love my family.
Monday, January 4, 2010 at 6:56 PM
here are some good ones.
* The full name "Harry Potter" is spoken. Extra swig if the person is addressing Harry and acting astonished while speaking.
* Hermione gets angry.
* Twins speak in unison.
* Hagrid cries.
* The word "brilliant" is uttered.
* Points are awarded to any house.
* Points are taken away from any house.
* Ron makes his wide-eyed, wide-mouthed "Home Alone" expression.
* Snape appears unexpectedly in a scary way.
* Mrs. Norris (cat) appears.
* Malfoy taunts somebody. Extra swig if he looks at his cronies for approval afterward.
* An elder issues some kind of stern warning.
* Somebody that looked good is actually bad.
* Somebody that looked bad is actually good.
* Dumbledore lets on that he knows some kind of secret he's too wise to talk about.
Monday, January 4, 2010 at 7:26 PM
Well I hope these aren't being implemented altogether, because that is pretty much the whole plot of the movie.
Although that would be fun.
Monday, January 4, 2010 at 9:12 PM
Drinking game isn't a one person game.
Each person of the group is supposed to pick one from the list.
them's the Queensbury rules.
Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 2:08 AM
Edited Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 2:11 AM
I was under the impression that everybody would take a shot/swig/what have you whenever any item on the list occurs, and the last person who manages to retain consciousness/not vomit/not die would be the winner. I thought that was the whole point of movie drinking games.
If each person just gets assigned a particular item where they alone have to drink when it comes up on screen, some people are almost certainly going to be at a disadvantage right off the bat.

"Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible."
this site has been bringing the lulz
also, watched Extract, Mike Judge's latest. It was funny, <3 Jason Bateman. there was an actor (J.K. Simmons) that reminded me of Dusty.
Monday, January 11, 2010 at 12:00 AM
i saw avatar. the plot made me pretty uncomfortable. the whole "white messiah" thing generally does. the dialogue was pretty terrible and everything was totally cliche. having said that, i did enjoy looking at it and it will give me a lot of material to make fun of for awhile. plus, sigourney weaver is still a babe and the main dude was fiiine.
Monday, January 11, 2010 at 12:58 AM
JK Simmons (aka Scoda from L&O aka Schillinger from Oz) kicks ass (and sometimes fucks it on screen).
Monday, January 11, 2010 at 1:38 AM
थ्री इडीयट्स (Three Idiots)
My first Bollywood movie (and definitely won't be my last).
Saw it with a bunch of Indian friends who were all afraid I wouldn't like it because I wouldn't get it (almost wonder if I should be insulted by that having watched it... probably just tuned more for an American audience though I'd guess).
Very funny with some touching scenes. Not too over the top with the music... but there was one scene near the end that just went a little overboard and had me squirming in my seat a little (hearing a phrase bringing somebody to life).
It is a little on the long side but it flows pretty well and the length didn't bother me much till the end. Totally recommend it (especially if you're looking to get your feet wet).

valmont- i had been told that this was rull sexy and colin firth bones a lot of ladies. he does, but it's not hot. it takes place in one of those french towns where everyone has a different accent.
girl with a pearl earring- colin firth does no bonin but he's so hot in this holy shit. and hello cillian murphy. it takes place in one of those dutch towns where everyone has a different accent.

new acura commercial blatantly rips off the drum beat from sgt. peppers lonely hearts club band. they don't even bother to monkey with the tempo.
Sunday, January 17, 2010 at 5:38 PM
i think i noticed that.
brick- this has been so hyped up for me for so long and i felt like i was supposed to love it, but i just thought it was meh. joseph gordon levitt was fine, but everyone else just seemed like they were in a high school play. it also moved a little too slowly for me. the dialogue was fun. i guess i just needed some more action and less brooding.

Friday, January 22, 2010 at 4:49 PM
i'd marry her if she lost some weight and dyed her hair darker and never opend her mouth and still i'd just be with her so that i could try and sleep with her dad.

...or from a used bookstore.
hp it's likely to be found in collection of short stories not as a stand alone book.

Run Fat Boy, Run
Well... there is definitely a reason why I had never heard of it before, but it's decent and it's definitely worth Netflixing.
Sunday, January 31, 2010 at 12:52 AM
the thing about run fat boy run is that it combines everything i love (simon pegg, dylan moran, orig screenplay by michael ian black), buuuut it did not live up to the hype i had about it in my head.
