monday night football, the saints vs. the vikings.
i watched this with my buddy josh, who grew up in louisiana and is a huge saints fan. it was a great game, back and forth, with some crazy happenings.
two punts returned for touchdowns by an explosive reggie bush.
a crazy blocked field goal attempt returned for a touchdown by minnesota.
a 52 yard field goal by the weak martin gramatica.
lots of unbelievably hard hitting.
how the saints managed to lose this one is beyond me. josh was devastated. i don't much care for either team so i just enjoyed what was a very entertaining football game.

I watched the second and third episode of Hippies. I was too obsessed with playing Six Degrees of Separation to concentrate that much on the actual show. Simon Pegg is awesome, Julian Rhind-Tutt is awesome, the creators are the Big Train guys.
The Cheetah Girls 2 is a bothersome film. It comes across clearly that Raven is a troubled girl that the others despise. The film is gallingly cringeworthy if you watch it seriously. It's the kind of art that the target audience will disown when they get older. The reason this film is bothersome is because of the alluring timbre of the 3LW harmonies. I don't know which of those girls is responsible for that sound but it made 3LW worth floating on and makes this film almost worth sitting through. I guess it wasn't the girl that left ages ago, cuz the sound is still there now she's gone. Anyway.
Os Normais : O Filme
This film is fuck you beautiful. When people with no money and a lot of want make a film, you get something like this. I want to see the tv series for which this film is a prequel.
Muito romântico!

What happens in vegas.
27 dresses (half of it) I didn't like this movie, especially the ending. We don't know what happened to her little sister. (the blond one). I was more interested in tess's character instead of janes.
btw I get free pay-per-view, cinemax, HBO etc.., 10 adult channels (but my mother deleted them) and of course the basic cable channels.
and guess what you can too!
if you have dish network, you can call them and let them know that you switched to cable, and go to this website to download the free file bins.

Fucking finally. The last thread was longer than an anobody post.
I watched some of Conan last night. I also watched Red Eye on the Fox News Channel at midnight. That show is funny. It's bascially a show with a couple guests and they all make fun of people in the news and current events. The host annoyed me when I first started watching it, but now I love the show and I love the cohost Bill Schulz. He's the best part of the show. And don't let the fact that it's on the FNC turn you off. It's not an uptight show. It's very funny.
I like the show a lot. Mon-Fri at Midnight. I don't think it's on tonight though. Debates and all...
Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 10:09 PM
it's my roommate's birthday today, so we were having a party, but when everyone got here, we were watching the debates, so the whole time we just sat on the couch and watched the debates and drank mimosas.
Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 10:12 PM
I watched and listened to the debates tonight. Bad times for McCain--he really seems to be grasping at straws. Most of the talking heads called it another tie, but Obama had several good comebacks in the middle that were probably big scores. Now I'm watching a documentary about micro-financing.
Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 10:15 PM
today i watched "gay witch hunt" from season 3 of the office cause it's probably one of my favorite office episodes.
The company has made it my responsibility today to put an end to 100,000 years of being weirded out by gays.
Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 10:19 PM
it was so awk when mccain patted that navy dude on the back. obama should have taken it a step further and given him a hug or answered the question on his lap.

The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course
Sad to watch cuz he's dead. I did get drawn in by his thing though, forgetting his death and the lameness of the movie. Basically some of his best tv bits have been put into a movie, all nicely shot and stuff.
Also sad cuz Kate Beahan is beyond reach. Pathetic.
Okay fun.

I had no idea until someone (I think chix0r) explicitly pointed it out. Now it seems obvious, of course, but I really couldn't tell at all before.
Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at 7:48 PM
ZT raises a valid point. But...bguirk, how can you even say that the mainstream media shows no bias?
The mainstream media is incredibly liberal! Have you ever seen anyone on NBC ask Obama any tough questions? They don't! They just drool over him! The president of NBC/General Electric also does an enormous amount of business with Iran. The Iranian government is trying to get ahold of nuclear weapons and they are planning to wipe Israel off the Earth. But the president of NBC/General Electric doesn't give a shit. He still does business with them.
When John McCain was on The View they asked him about The Constitution. When Obama came on The View, they all started batting their eyes and asking him about whether or not he's related to Brad Pitt. It's pathetic!
The funny thing is, viewers don't like biased news. That's why NBC and MSNBC's ratings are in the toilet. The Fox News Channel beats CNN, and MSNBC in ratings. This is because they don't kiss Obama's ass. They aren't on the far right. They are moderate.
I've never heard CNN talk about William Ayres. He's a proud terrorist that is good buddies with Obama. No, they didn't meet once and shake hands. No, they aren't acquiantances. They are friends! If you haven't read the story, google it. William Ayres and Barack Obama.
The mainstream media loves to ask McCain the tough questions. But Obama gets nothing but softballs. The media can't stop eating his asshole out. Well if Obama is elected, they will soon realize that he can't fix everything that is broken in America. They will realize that he isn't the Messiah. They'll be in denial for a while, but they will see how wrong they were to put all their faith in him.

no media organization is free from bias. most of them tend to under report on their sponsors which is why I mainly listen to public media along with a subscription to the New York Times.

I don't watch NBC so I can't really comment, but by my reading Obama hasn't sat down for an exclusive with NBC for quite awhile--probably not since the convention and McCain's camp has banned their candidaets from appearing on the network. Before the last debate people were saying Brokaw was biased towards McCain, but I'm not buying it. I don't know how engaging in business with Iran makes their news division liberal. You need to explain that relationship better before I comment.
When John McCain was on The View they asked him about The Constitution. When Obama came on The View, they all started batting their eyes
I honestly hope you don't think The View counts as journalistic media.
The funny thing is, viewers don't like biased news. That's why NBC and MSNBC's ratings are in the toilet. The Fox News Channel beats CNN, and MSNBC in ratings. This is because they don't kiss Obama's ass. They aren't on the far right. They are moderate.
The links between the Republican Party and Fox News have been well documented in several instances by several groups and most would argue they are the far from moderate. Wikipedia has a nice example and a link to the transcript:
"While promoting his memoir, What Happened, Scott McClellan, former White House Press Secretary (2003–2006) for President George W. Bush stated on the July 25, 2008 edition of Hardball with Chris Matthews that the Bush White House routinely gave talking points to Fox News commentators — but not journalists — in order to influence discourse and content.[35] "
I've never heard CNN talk about William Ayres. He's a proud terrorist that is good buddies with Obama. No, they didn't meet once and shake hands. No, they aren't acquiantances. They are friends! If you haven't read the story, google it. William Ayres and Barack Obama.
You're very wrong about this. CNN was all over this because this came up in an Obama debate with Hillary Clinton over 6 months ago. Multiple news organizations investigated the relationship and found that they were not close and have had fleeting contact at best over the past 12 years. Those same organizations are re-running that coverage this week because nothing has changed and Obama has repeatedly denounced Ayers activities in the 60's and 70's. Many Chicago politicians, republican and democrat, have been associated with Ayers because he is politically active and serves on many boards.
The mainstream media loves to ask McCain the tough questions. But Obama gets nothing but softballs. The media can't stop eating his asshole out.
I thought long and hard about what you wrote and whether or not it deserved a point by point rebuttal because everything you have said doesn't strike me as the convictions of a serious person. In the end I gave in because you called me out by name, but your points could've easily come straight from the McCain campaign which is sad. I hope you are capable of more than a simple parrotting back of the party line you are exposed to from the campaign or Fox News. There is a world of concerned people out there who are dogged in their pursuit of the truth and presenting it in a clear way so people can form opinions. Some organizations are better at it than others. There is an actual liberal media out there too and they proudly proclaim their bias: Salon.com and Mother Jones are examples. Before you go around brandishing that label you should take a look at what the content of the real liberal media is and how it's different from the "mainstream" media organizations.

Sex and the City (the movie) but not all of it because it's 3 hours long, and I don't have time to sit there in front of the t.v for 3 hours.
I didn't know that there were some pornographic scenes in there. Also how come they don't show the 4 main characters private parts when they're having sex? The only private parts they show are Samantha's next door neighbors. Also who has sex with all the curtains and patio door open?
Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 4:15 PM

can I be your neighbor?
Someday I will be like Samantha Jones. Live by the ocean in CA, date a younger model, manage a modeling agency, and watch my hot surfer neighbor bang different chicks every night.
However, I will not take any trips to New York and be friends with a red head who doesn't shave her crotch.

You sure can as long as you keep that promise not to befriend a redhead who doesn't shave. No fireboxes allowed.

i watched tristram shandy: a cock and bull story. i loved it. it's a mockumentary about making a movie about the book the life and opinions of tristram shandy with steve coogan and rob brydon and i love both of them.
i went to see a play called gutenberg the musical. my friend told me that it was about steve gutenberg, but it was actually about johann gutenberg and the invention of the printing press. so, that was really funny when we figured out that this was not going to be about it takes two. however, the play itself was very funny and we enjoyed it a lot.

Pittsburgh- it's this mockumentary about jeff goldblum deciding to go to pittsburgh to be in a regional theater production of the music man. ed begley jr and iliana douglas also go with him. it's so funny, i watched it twice in a row. i love ed begley jr and jeff goldblum because they're both so hysterical and weird. jeff goldblum is so sincere the whole time and it's great. moby also makes a short funny appearance.

we are marshall - the first scene after the plane crashes is filmed on the street where i live. they painted the miller store to look like an old gas station where matthew fox buys boiled peanuts and listens to the radio to find out about the crash. i quit watching after i saw it.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
The first time I saw this film was in my History of Modern Art class. Partly because of its bizardness, it left a deep impression on me. I just watched it for the second time, and it still was as captivating as the first time. Forget the fact that it associates with German Expressionism and is a silent film, its concise plot, stunning visuals, score, and gothic style make it a very nice horror/thriller. You don't have to be an artsy fartsy to enjoy it.

For the third time in 8 years I watched Frontline's The Choice tonight. Highly recommended--they do some of the best journalism in the country and they shined a light on both candidates tonight that gave me some new thoughts on each even though I've been following this thing feverishly for a year and a half. One of the best things about this year's was not having to watch them try to wring an hour of time out of Bush's biography which was always conspicuously achievement free, especially compared to his democratic opponent. No major revaluations this year like in 2000 when the extent of what a major pothead Gore was got revealed, but it's just a solid long look at both candidates and puts some of the stupid dust-ups of the past 18 months into perspective. It's free to watch online so have at it.

just watched a few scenes from casino royale.
the final hand of the poker game is outrageous. nevermind that there's a 4-way all-in on the river, nevermind that they show down in order of worst to best. let's just, for those who care (bguirk), break down the hand.
the board was A 4 6 8 A, with four spades and the A of diamonds.
all-in guy # 1 has the K Q of spades for the nut flush, and turns his hand over confidently. not so fast guy # 1, guy # 2 (an obese black man) rolls over 8 8 for eights full of aces. now on to guy # 3, who is the villian bond has been losing to all game - motherfucker rolls over A 6 for aces full of sixes. now to bond, who takes a long beat before finally showing the 7 5 of spades for the straight flush.
i love bond movies.

let's just, for those who care (bguirk), break down the hand.
I dared scoff at the horrible poker in that movie in an earlier last thing you watched thread and TF was incredibly offended. My argument was that hold 'em is such a part of popular culture right now you can't get away with showing bad poker. Rounders probably has the most realistic hands, but when I watched that movie a second time the poker was the only thing that held up.
Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 11:46 PM
Rounders probably has the most realistic hands, but when I watched that movie a second time the poker was the only thing that held up.
i thought that, as a movie, it was great. maybe that's because it's a poker movie, but still, i've seen it like 20 times and i always enjoy it.
and the poker was as "realistic" as i suppose you can expect from a movie, but (like in the matt damon gets busted hand in the beginning) making nines full and running into the case two aces to be beat out of all your money happens once in a blue moon.
also, checking the nuts on the river (like in the final hand, when damon held the 8 9 for the nut straight) is almost always the wrong move.
Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 11:53 PM
also, checking the nuts on the river (like in the final hand, when damon held the 8 9 for the nut straight) is almost always the wrong move.
yes it is. I guess my beef with the movie and a lot of poker fiction is that tells become overblown. I guess they make for good drama, but unless you're playing freeze out heads up (just read a great book about that BTW) like Damon and Teddy KGB did at the end--tells don't mean shit because most poker is played with 9 other opponents and your chances of having the cards when you end up against one of them are slim to none--it might happen once a night.

The ONLY times I'll watch CMT is when they have a good movie on...or reruns of Mama's Family or Wife Swap when there's nothing else on.

Good call.
Laputa: Castle In The Sky
I love the mysterious stranger stories. Where did she come from, why are there people after her, what is her secret? I love the epic scope of this movie imbued into a swell groovy adventure.
The Holy Mountain
Um, I enjoy the atmosphere of this movie so much.
Spriggan
The Japanese dub makes it a little better, I think. It's got a very muddy story, prolly cuz the makers struggled to adapt a long comic storyline or whatever. The action is kind of bracing, like the persistent wind at the beach.
Of course it's got a restricted rating despite containing nothing worth restricting. Or does it? I'm bored with all those lines.
Anyway, this movie is fairly cheesy anime fun.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Still beyond tranquility.
Species III
It's kind of staggering how blatant the propaganda is in these cheap, straight-to-video sequels. It makes sense though; they pass completely under the radar of anyone who would protest such things and reach the target audience of poor bored people. It also explains why this industry of underclass movies exists. Is there really a market for these movies? Of course not.
This movie is lame.
The Watcher
Seeing James Spader before he fell from pretty-boy-grace is always a bit disconcerting unless it's from more than ten years ago. I saw a clip from Secretary recently and it was so weird. He was so pretty and now he's so blobby. Does he have some kind of kidney problem like that gay fashion correspondent on Entertainment Tonight? Anyway. This movie is so cheap and so lousy and so boring.
Friday, October 17, 2008 at 11:54 PM
i miss the old james spader too. you know who else i think has the bloated disease? vincent d'onofrio. omg he looks so bad and i'm so worried.

To be honest, I haven't seen the ending since it first hit VHS. There was a lot of pot from then until now. It was just put onDemand and I tried watching it twice, passed out closeish to the end both times. I imagine I'll agree once I man up and finish it.
Matrix tho, overrated piece of shit.

the movie had continuity problems and was over-directed, but still it was really entertaining. i thought they did a good job of making the movie feel like a video game.

also, I just watched 'Children of Men', and that was fucking AWESOME.

yeah I didn't like the bar scene where the guru was making those diarrhea sounds with the cup. It lasted like 3 minutes (?).
Next time I see a person wearing a cowboy hat I'll be like "I used to have a hat like that, then my mom got a job" lol

I'm fucking pissed, I can't find a copy with subtitles on the actual avi file. Every copy says I need to install some shit. Its pissing me off.

Is it asking for a subtitle file, or a codec, or something else?

I love Kevin Hill. It's vibe-licious.
Fun fact: Christina Hendricks has enormous breasts but I didn't ever notice on the show. They really downplay it. Taye Diggs never takes his shirt off either.

The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer
Shirley Temple plays the typical annoying brat. Her sister in the movie is pretty however.
Funniest role I've seen Cary Grant in so far.

Frost/Nixon.
I felt slightly beaten over the head with the not terribly subtile parallels with W, and there were some other distracting bumps, but overall it was good.
If you're in the mood for something a bit slowly paced, it's definitely worth checking out.

I saw Seven Pounds with Will Smith (Im waiting for The Wrestler to come out). The movie would of been complete garbage if it wasn't for the ending. The movie was longer then it needed to be and I wish woody harrelson was in it more (love kingpin). Decent movie overall and probably worth seeing depending on how much a movie ticket costs for you.

spoiler alert: he kills himself and gives his organs to everyone.
also:
Tom Cruise doesn't kill Hitler.

That Brad Pitt movie. Only remember Benjamin. Either way, hes born old and grows young. Pretty dope movie I'd say. I went with 5 dudes. Probably would have been a lot better if I brought a lady friend. Either way, go see it. Very Forrest Gumpish.
EDIT: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Sunday, December 28, 2008 at 9:37 AM
My ex-wife shat pretty heavily on it... think I still want to go see it though (although it looks insufferably long so I might wait till I can NetFlix it).
Bruce Willis is a Ghost.
Damn you and your dirty spoilers BG! I still haven't seen that!

that Will Smith movie looks so melodramatic and bad. Not that any Will Smith movie has ever looked good to me, but still.
Sunday, December 28, 2008 at 12:20 PM
I didn't mind Omega Man, and I enjoyed iRobot and Men in Black.
7 pounds looks too long and drawn out for me unless I'm in just the right mood (which I rarely am).
Sunday, December 28, 2008 at 12:24 PM
I'm just tired of actors who've become franchises unto themselves. Cruise, Reeves, Smith....they're no longer actors anymore to me and for that reason I find them nearly unwatchable. Of the three mentioned Smith actually has a little talent, but I see so few of the movies I want to catch these days that I'd rather spend my time plowing through my Netflix backlog.

tom cruise is good. i'm anti anti cruise. maybe this valkyrie is terrible, but think about all of the other movies he's made. you know what, i'm imdbing this right now and i'll go down a list.
rain man, born on the fourth of july, jerry maguire, magnolia, a few good men, mission impossible, tropic thunder were all good. those were the only ones i've seen and i've liked them all, so i've never seen a bad tom cruise movie. he's got a pretty good track record. people just don't like his scientology thangs.
how many times does will smith work out shirtless in this movie? that's a smith staple. but that man has so much fucking charisma, i can't understand anyone who doesn't like him.
Sunday, December 28, 2008 at 11:30 PM
That girl 000 posted is Amy Acker and she has a way more sad and tired cunt than when Stardust released "The Music Sounds Better With You".
But don't we all.
Mandee, why for? Tom Cruise can't act for shit. All he can do is look pretty. You want to see his acting, watch the scene in A Few Good Men when he knocks stuff off a table. Are you cringing? Me too.
Whereas Will Smith is a sweet actor with a miserable ambition. Therefore: bad movies too often.
cock puns ahead
what is with will smith movie titles lately?

remember when Will Ferrell used to be Robert Goulet in Shakespeare on SNL? That's the equivalent of Cruise's acting. He's just Tom Cruise walking around with a different name in these movies other than mayyybe tropic thunder--but I didn't find him funny in that. So no those were not all good.

i enjoy movies and TV shows that use (virtual) unknowns a lot more, for the most part. it's easier to buy into the story. case in point: mad men on AMC.
edit:
but I didn't find him funny in [tropic thunder].
i strongly awtc, he was super creepy, not funny.

History Channel's The Universe on Blu-Ray. Just bought it. Just finished the first disc. Pretty fucking sweet. Pick it up.

Snow Angels: I barely recognized Kate Beckinsale in this, but that's probably just because I haven't seen her in much. She's pretty. I didn't like how the movie kept showing one scene, broken up into and interrupted by five scenes. All of the characters were fucked up, and it was interesting once it took a turn, but getting to that point was tedious and uncomfortable.
Eagle Eye: Exceeded expectations. There were a couple things I'd never seen done before, and it kept me interested in the plot the whole time. At first I was disappointed with who was behind everything, but I gradually came to accept it. I think it would've been much better if they had actually killed Jerry, though. Michelle is pretty, and they couldn't possibly have found a cuter kid to play Sam. Roasario and Billy Bob were nice to see, too.

step brothers: i have a soft spot for adults behaving like kids, i thought it was funny.
no media organization is free from bias. most of them tend to under report on their sponsors which is why I mainly listen to public media
i listen to npr sometimes but it seems quite biased in the 'made and for sheltered white rich people' sense, to the extent it's lolish when they report on "urban culture".

Woody Allen's Love & Death: It was really good. I'm surprised this one isn't as popular as Annie Hall or Manhattan. It's also the source of several Loveline quotes including "A puckish satire on contemporary morays" and another couple I'm blanking on.

I agree...especially when they're portraying real people. One such example is Jim Carrey in Man on the Moon. The portrayal was good; he looked enough like Kaufmann; had his mannerisms down pretty well...but I often found it difficult to see through Carrey, to Andy, because Carrey himself is so well-known. knowmsayin'?

Have you seen House of Yes? It's a rly good Parker Posey movie.
also I agree w/ Mandee about Tom Cruise. He may be a doucher irl, but he's a decent actor. Collateral is one of my favorite movies.

Sukiyaki Western Django: In terms of this being a Miike film, it's actually a little disappointing. Maybe the fact that this is a classic Japanese story, told as a Western, set in "Nevada-Utah," with Japanese actors who are speaking a language they don't know (English), was weird enough that he decided the story itself should be normal. It was a little surreal to need subtitles on something in English. The movie doesn't seem to have a whole lot to say, and it's probably better if you've seen Yojimbo and/or Django, but aside from a few disturbing things happening, it's interesting for aesthetics alone.
Ladrón que roba a ladrón: The director made a big deal about how this was a Hollywood movie that just happened to be in Spanish, so it looks like an American film and not a foreign one, but most of the time, apart from the language, foreign films don't seem that different to me from American ones in the first place. Like Sukiyaki, this was pretty much a fluff piece, but at least I was expecting that from it. The ending was a bit more dopey than I would've liked, but the rest of it was entertaining, and there were even a couple of surprises.

very good movie, very funny, but also a bit of a downer.
FWIW I've been to Bruges and met a dear dear dear dear friend there--it's a ton of fun in Europe for not much $. If you're the right age there's a bunch of places where you will get high or laid if you want . Belgium is highly underrated.

Yes Man - Surprisingly good light-hearted movie. Not really that funny, but the story is interesting and it's just a good chill movie. 7/10
The Spirit - Freaking AMAZING. Fuck all the critics who gave it a bad review, it was a great story with awesome effects and probably the most stylish movie I've ever seen. 9/10
Benjamin Button - I loved it, mostly cause I love old-timey movies set in this era, and I think Brad Pitt's an awesome actor. It was a really long movie yet it kept you enthralled the entire time, that's a sign of a great movie. It really is an epic journey, but the one dig I have against it, is it had so much potential, with a plot that wide open, they really could have focused more on some of his relationships with people, and the end was kind of abrupt and unsatisfying. Nevertheless, an amazing movie, they did a great job with it. 8.5/10

A Clockwork Orange was freaking weird. I didn't really like it as much as I thought I would.
