Do you have an idea that would improve this site? Post here!

Silent Virgin

Saturday, January 31, 2004 at 1:50 PM

Hey great job SV!

What do you think of adding a spell checker and maybe breaking the threads into sub-categories so it is not one long string of random threads?

Either way this is a major improvement.

Thanks again.

Great work SV!

How about a search feature? Or would that be too much work to implement?

Either way, the new forum is still better than the old one. Thanks for the time you put into making this great site!

Nick

It would be nice to have spell check. I'm a horrible speller, so I'm always copying & pasting messages back and forth between the forum and my text editor, where I can run spell check. I'll have to think about how to implement it, though.

I've thought about categories. One of the things I hate about the various glitzy PHP boards out there is how they are partitioned into sub-boards... it's like you have to visit multiple boards just to figure out what's going on. So if I do implement categories or topics, I still want all the threads to be integrated into a single page so you don't have to run around. However, I can see where people may not want to read about certain topics (like technical FTP discussion, for example) and would prefer to just filter those things out. At the same time, I want to avoid forcing posters or moderators to explicitly categorize posts. So, anyway, I'll be thinking about this one, too.

I definitely want a search page. This shouldn't be too difficult; I just have to read the documentation and figure out how to write it.

P.S. I didn't spell check this message. ;-)

I'd like a feature where I get a candy corn each time I post something:

  • Incredibly entertaining
  • Incredibly stupid
  • Mean-spirited and/or hurtful
  • Non-sensical

Please, can you do it? Huh huh huh?

SV,

Something to think about while brainstorming alternatives to the sub-category idea: The main drawback to this layout as it relates to a long string vs. categorized format is that with the long string there isn't any kind of organization. This tends to encourage me (at least) to ignore things down the list as they have a connotation of seeming old and outdated. Only the top posts seem to be alive.

If there is another paradigm that works to organize things a little more hopefully someone will suggest it or maybe we can invent something.

I completely understand and agree to an extent with your feelings about the categorized format forcing you to go multiple places just to see what's currently happening. However with more code (I empathize with all of the hard work that has gone into this so far) we could select an option to show fresh posts, I think it is commonly referred to as "subscribing" to threads and options to show only fresh posts. There could also be an option to show this long string format or a categorized alternative format.

I think a lot of other forums use a generic layout then customize that. You appear to have built this from the ground up. Not that there is anything wrong with that :-)

You've done a good job with this -you're the best!

BTW- If I am not mistaken, I thnk this new layout does in fact move all threads with new posts to the top each time you log back in. If this is so maybe I just need to get used to this. Eventually the threads that have not recently had a new post will drop away. This aspect means different dialogues on topics will often be overlooked and destined to be repeated. Just more to think about.

This doesnt have to do with forums, but maybe some more drops ( If there are any) and some more sound files, in any catagory. Thanks.

I had a suggestion, SV. How about in the "people" section when you click on someone's name you get a list of their posts. YOu already have that -- what I would suggest is a slight change. My suggestion is when you click on a message, you go STRAIGHT to the message in the forum and the part that the person (me) wrote would just be highlighted. It seems the way you have it now, it includes an unnecessary step.

That way, when I am unsure of dialogue I am having with people and in which thread it is -- I can just go to my name under "people" and click on my messages and go STRAIGHT to the message where my post would be highlighted or something -- that way I could just post my reply directly.

eh?

I agree with Josh.

Thomas/Frope

Darkfloyd -- indeed, this will be the place for public discussion on how to improve the site in general (not just the forum).

I don't really have any more drops, although I'm always collecting new ones. Right now, the only drops "waiting in the queue" are "Alphabet" ("A B C D" in the little girl voice -- does anyone know the date of the original show?), "Bang!" (shotgun blast), "Mahalo" (that Hawaiian guy), and the recent "You're gonna go to jail, buddy" (Dr. Bruce). I wait for the new drops to pile up, then I add a whole bunch at once, just to save time & effort on my end.

I also have a new bumper waiting -- bumper #23.

When I initially created this site, there were entire categories of clips which I eliminated in order to make everything fit into the 200MB of web space I had at the time. I wish I had saved the original MP3 playlist, because now there is much more space available. Here are some examples of the categories which are in my personal MP3 collection, but absent from the web site:

  • Personal: Adam and Drew (and other Loveline people) reveal details about their personal lives. This is one of my favorite categories, which I would like to add to the site eventually. (These often become "Journal" entries.)
  • Rants: I'm kinda ambivalent about this category. I started it in response to an e-mail from somebody who suggested that I add Adam's rants to the site. Problem is, Adam's rants are long, and in general, he repeats them enough times so that after a while, I, for one, don't really need to hear them again. On the other hand, there are some old rants which I wouldn't mind hearing again just for the nostalgia value -- e.g., the WNBA/Sisters rant ("YOU PAY 'EM!") -- and nope, I don't have that one :-(
  • Show: Talk about the show itself. This is already a category of course, but the web site version is kinda thin. On my CD-ROMs and hard drive, this is a much bigger category.
  • Stories: Adam rambles about his past. I love these clips even more than the "Personal" clips. But like "Rants", they tend to be very long! I don't know what percentage of people have high-speed connections, but I try to keep individual clips under five minutes in length (since that would be the length of your average MP3 song).

By the way: in theory, any clip which doesn't win a permanent place on the site will eventually become a "Clip of the Week".

Anyway, all this to say: look forward to new clips in the future!

Silent Virgin

Sunday, February 1, 2004 at 2:35 PM

Josh, I have been finding the people/messages section to be disorienting myself. I've been reassigning messages to different authors -- i.e., trying to make sure that all the old messages listed under a person's name were actually written by that person, and all the messages written by that person are listed under their name! Going back and forth between a person's message page and the main thread page is annoying... I've been juggling multiple browser windows.

Thanks for the suggestion... I may recruit you to play with new, experimental page layouts once I have the chance to create some ;-)

OK this isn't so much a bug as an inconvenience :-p I just edited a post to make my AIM screen name a link to IM me. I was using Jeremy's link, because I am lazy this way, and I forgot to replace his screen name with mine, so now if people click on my name, it IMs him. I tried to edit it again, but it said "Cannot edit, this message is more than an hour old." Perhaps you could make the limit like 2 hours?

Speaking of "funniest calls," here's an idea.... Why don't we name a Funniest/Best Call of the Week? Over the weekend, everyone can throw out their nominees from the previous week, and we can have an informal poll.

Oh, SV - Is there a poll tool that you can use to vote and put on the main forum page?? That'd be good times!

Agent 007

Sunday, February 29, 2004 at 5:40 PM

I'm sure Pan Pan would be more than willing to let everyone use his poll tool. *rim shot* "Thank you everyone -- I'll be here all week!"

I've been wanting to suggest this for a long time, but never got around to it. No one may care now, but, what the hell. :)

Any of you who called boards in your life time probably remember Renegade (and the like, Telegard, Illusion, etc -- COTT LANG PHEARS TIM STRIKE!!). One of the nice features their forum software had was called a "New Scan."

A new scan would go through all of the new posts in any of the discussions groups (which in our case would be threads) and would show you each new post in a sequenial fashion. This was good because it automated going through each discussion group that had new messages and reading them. The new scan would do all the work for you, getting and ordering all of the new posts, showing you where they were posted, and letting you reply. In this way, you didn't need to visit each discussion group (threads, in our world) individually to read the new posts in it. You could also configure your new scan to ignore posts in particular discussion groups (threads).

The one thing I find particuarlly laborious about reading posts on this site is jumping from thread to thread. For instance, if I log in and see all of the new posts and click on one thread read all of the new posts and comment, then I have to click "Forum" and click another thread, and restart the whole process. If all the threads are short, this isn't so bad. But, loading the entire thread (from the first post to the last) is usually completely unnecessary since I just want to read the new posts.

This was particuarlly noticable with the 600+ post picture thread, and all of the other threads that get ~100 posts. If there was something like a "new scan" feature, the entire thread for each thread containing a new post wouldn't need to be loaded, just the new posts from each thread (say with a link to view the entire thread they were posted in, and a link to post in that thread). So, with something like the picture thread, people would have done a new scan, and seen the most recent 10 or 20 new posts since they last logged in, and not had to load the pictures/posts they seen already and weren't going to read -- no overhead. All of the new posts from each thread could probably be displayed on one screen (maybe splitting it up there were more than 50 new posts). This way, I could read all of the new posts at once and not have to go from thead to thread.

So, thats my suggestion. :)

I have mad perl and sql skilz. So, if there was some way to collaborate on adding this, I would be willing to help.

ZT has point... old school BBS was the shiznit.... WAS.

Why not embrace the current trend in web based forums and adopt one of the common formats/languages out there? Not that I'm saying copycat others... just a more richer GUI user friendly interface that does not allow the likes of Mirror_Phoenix (with his middle school haxOr education) to copy all of our profiles to his? Seems a pretty serious exploit to consider...

How about cutting them into bite-sized pieces? Maybe in 5mb sequences. As for my own suggestion, I'd like a way to get entire shows. Perhaps put up an ftp section where people post their ftp information that are willing to share. I don't know about the relationship between webpages and ftp protocals, but maybe there's a way to signify which ftps are up and running on the ftp section of the webpage...?

And thanks for the site. I just found it not too long ago and I have to say, I really like it.

In lieu of a more comprehensive search page, how about a thread search not unlike the "People" search we have now. An Ode to TLC:

Don't go changing, to try and please me, You never let me down before.
Don't imagine, you're too familiar, and I won't post here anymore.

I would not leave you, in times of trouble, we never could have come this far.
I took the good times, I'll take the bad times.
And I'll take you just the way you are.

Don't go trying, some new fashion. Don't change the colour of your site.
You always have my, unspoken passion, although I might not seem to care.

I don't want clever, conversation or I clearly wouldn't be looking here,
I just want somewhere, that I can post to, I want you just the way you are.

I need to know that you will always be the same old website that I knew,
I said I love you, and that's forever, and this I promise from my cold, dead heart.
I couldn't love you, any better, I love you just the way you are.

I took the good times, I'll take the bad times.

We've been taking bad times since Adam left. As has the show, I'm guessing. Strange how after all those years of hearing how he was literally a millionaire, he left the show because of money. But I don't blame him. All good things come to an end. Eventually even Drew will leave, maybe also because of money, but more hopefully because of extreme old age. Hopefully the show will not end with him. How terrible a tragedy it would be if the new youth couldn't learn what we've all gotten from the show... whether it was uncontrollable laughter, or deep and thought-provoking ideas.

Either way, there's one thing we must hope for... that no matter what happens, the ideal of Loveline will continue, even if in the hands of completely different people. As long as the spirit and ideal of helping those in need is fulfilled; whether a question about a caller's penis size, or a sincere desperate cry for a reason to not commit suicide. It's truly amazing what Dr.Drew has helped to create, not just a simple help-line, but an entire medium in which people can relate their problems without the fear of rejection or scorn, embarassment or ridicule.

Through it all, I can't remember a single instance of Drew or Adam (unless you count his jokes... after all he was literally a millionaire) being snotty or big-headed. Each praise given to both Drew and Adam "You're a god", "You're awesome", "You're my hero", "You helped me change my life", and no matter how many times that was said (many times indeed) each praise was always recieved with a modest thank-you, no matter what.

It's really hard for me to express my profound respect/fondness for Dr.Drew and Adam. Both were such an amazing influnence on my life, and I still continue to present myself with the challenge of becoming more like the two most amazing people I've ever heard.

Knowing this, I feel terribly sorry for Westwood One. Trying to replace Adam is like trying to find a key to match a lock. Really only one key fits, so what can they possibly do? Drew (being the lock) must change, mold to fit a new key, one that obiously will never be the same, and possibly can never be as good. Only time will tell. They (hopefully) have a long, long road ahead, and maybe with that new road a someone new will step up to the plate, and quench our thirst for the new permanent co-host.

Unfortunately, it has become common practice to "Colbert" threads on the forum -- people will repeatedly post high-resolution images of something, commonly of Stephen Colbert, in threads that the user Colbering the thread doesn't like in order to discourage other people from reading them.

I don't care so much that they do this. However, generally what I'll do when I log in to the forum I'll open all of the newly modified threads in tabs. When one (or more) heavily Colberted thread is opening in a tab, it usually makes my browser hang (or in some cases crashes it) while I'm reading other threads.

If I knew which threads were Colberted, I wouldn't open them (or do it when I didn't have to worry about my browser crashing). Would it be possible to post the size (in kilobytes) of threads along with the rest of the data about them on the forum page? If changing the code to do that would be too much work (you'd have the get the size of the images and then add the size of the text), you could accomplish something similar by posting a count of the number of images posted in the thread -- you'd just have to count the number of 'IMG' tags (though you might also want to count embedded flash and the like). That wouldn't be as good as the size, but would be good enough for me.

Perhaps the forum index, in addition to indicating the author of each threads FIRST post, could indicate the author of its MOST RECENT post. This could be helpful, in that, if a popular thread is ruined by some idiot, we could have a warning before opening it to see the new posts, and could opt not to bother.

The tlcnotifier (RSS, LiveJournal, FeedBurner) does that.

ZT-In-Zen

Thursday, November 9, 2006 at 6:55 AM

As much as I really do personally care about the intimate details of everyone's life on the forum down to their indecision about drinking at work, I do think there might be a better way to keep up with everyone rather than having them "LiveJournal post" on the forum.

Most of the people who do LiveJournal post on the forum do have other blogs where they could put the information, they just don't feel like other people are going to read it. To be fair, people do read it when it's posted here.

What I'm envisioning to solve this is something like what facebook has done with their updates. Each user could submit their blog feeds when creating a new account (or updating an existing one) on TLC. Then TLC could publish (not in the forum) the updates to their blogs as they occur (in an AJAXy shoutbox style column) or do just like facebook does and show a list of all the updates after people log in.

The feature would be enabled by default, but could be turned off.

There'd have to be some measure of relevance. For instance, the forum software would only poll feeds for users than have logged in within the last month.

Everyone here makes goof off threads from time to time, but I actually do that less than zt or mayo. Most of the time I have something genuine to say. You may not agree with it, but I really believe that certain things are the truth. Hell I make more loveline related posts than most people here (which doesn't mean much since loveline is rarely a topic anymore) but still.

Drake really has done a downward spiral. I have pity for him since his life is going nowhere and he really has nothing that isn't directly connected to mom and dad. Not even a non inflatable girlfriend.
