Saturday, January 31, 2004 at 1:50 PM Hey great job SV! What do you think of adding a spell checker and maybe breaking the threads into sub-categories so it is not one long string of random threads? Either way this is a major improvement. Thanks again. —Cracked |

Saturday, January 31, 2004 at 2:10 PM Great work SV! How about a search feature? Or would that be too much work to implement? Either way, the new forum is still better than the old one. Thanks for the time you put into making this great site! GT, Nick —nickvelk |

Saturday, January 31, 2004 at 4:46 PM It would be nice to have spell check. I'm a horrible speller, so I'm always copying & pasting messages back and forth between the forum and my text editor, where I can run spell check. I'll have to think about how to implement it, though. I've thought about categories. One of the things I hate about the various glitzy PHP boards out there is how they are partitioned into sub-boards... it's like you have to visit multiple boards just to figure out what's going on. So if I do implement categories or topics, I still want all the threads to be integrated into a single page so you don't have to run around. However, I can see where people may not want to read about certain topics (like technical FTP discussion, for example) and would prefer to just filter those things out. At the same time, I want to avoid forcing posters or moderators to explicitly categorize posts. So, anyway, I'll be thinking about this one, too. I definitely want a search page. This shouldn't be too difficult; I just have to read the documentation and figure out how to write it. P.S. I didn't spell check this message. ;-) —Silent Virgin |

Saturday, January 31, 2004 at 11:31 PM Edited Saturday, January 31, 2004 at 11:38 PM SV, Something to think about while brainstorming alternatives to the sub-category idea: The main drawback to this layout as it relates to a long string vs. categorized format is that with the long string there isn't any kind of organization. This tends to encourage me (at least) to ignore things down the list as they have a connotation of seeming old and outdated. Only the top posts seem to be alive. If there is another paradigm that works to organize things a little more hopefully someone will suggest it or maybe we can invent something. I completely understand and agree to an extent with your feelings about the categorized format forcing you to go multiple places just to see what's currently happening. However with more code (I empathize with all of the hard work that has gone into this so far) we could select an option to show fresh posts, I think it is commonly referred to as "subscribing" to threads and options to show only fresh posts. There could also be an option to show this long string format or a categorized alternative format. I think a lot of other forums use a generic layout then customize that. You appear to have built this from the ground up. Not that there is anything wrong with that :-) You've done a good job with this -you're the best! BTW- If I am not mistaken, I thnk this new layout does in fact move all threads with new posts to the top each time you log back in. If this is so maybe I just need to get used to this. Eventually the threads that have not recently had a new post will drop away. This aspect means different dialogues on topics will often be overlooked and destined to be repeated. Just more to think about. —Cracked |

Sunday, February 1, 2004 at 9:40 AM I had a suggestion, SV. How about in the "people" section when you click on someone's name you get a list of their posts. YOu already have that -- what I would suggest is a slight change. My suggestion is when you click on a message, you go STRAIGHT to the message in the forum and the part that the person (me) wrote would just be highlighted. It seems the way you have it now, it includes an unnecessary step. That way, when I am unsure of dialogue I am having with people and in which thread it is -- I can just go to my name under "people" and click on my messages and go STRAIGHT to the message where my post would be highlighted or something -- that way I could just post my reply directly. eh? —Josh |

Sunday, February 1, 2004 at 2:24 PM Darkfloyd -- indeed, this will be the place for public discussion on how to improve the site in general (not just the forum). I don't really have any more drops, although I'm always collecting new ones. Right now, the only drops "waiting in the queue" are "Alphabet" ("A B C D" in the little girl voice -- does anyone know the date of the original show?), "Bang!" (shotgun blast), "Mahalo" (that Hawaiian guy), and the recent "You're gonna go to jail, buddy" (Dr. Bruce). I wait for the new drops to pile up, then I add a whole bunch at once, just to save time & effort on my end. I also have a new bumper waiting -- bumper #23. When I initially created this site, there were entire categories of clips which I eliminated in order to make everything fit into the 200MB of web space I had at the time. I wish I had saved the original MP3 playlist, because now there is much more space available. Here are some examples of the categories which are in my personal MP3 collection, but absent from the web site: - Personal: Adam and Drew (and other Loveline people) reveal details about their personal lives. This is one of my favorite categories, which I would like to add to the site eventually. (These often become "Journal" entries.)
- Rants: I'm kinda ambivalent about this category. I started it in response to an e-mail from somebody who suggested that I add Adam's rants to the site. Problem is, Adam's rants are long, and in general, he repeats them enough times so that after a while, I, for one, don't really need to hear them again. On the other hand, there are some old rants which I wouldn't mind hearing again just for the nostalgia value -- e.g., the WNBA/Sisters rant ("YOU PAY 'EM!") -- and nope, I don't have that one :-(
- Show: Talk about the show itself. This is already a category of course, but the web site version is kinda thin. On my CD-ROMs and hard drive, this is a much bigger category.
- Stories: Adam rambles about his past. I love these clips even more than the "Personal" clips. But like "Rants", they tend to be very long! I don't know what percentage of people have high-speed connections, but I try to keep individual clips under five minutes in length (since that would be the length of your average MP3 song).
By the way: in theory, any clip which doesn't win a permanent place on the site will eventually become a "Clip of the Week". Anyway, all this to say: look forward to new clips in the future! —Silent Virgin |

Sunday, February 1, 2004 at 2:35 PM Josh, I have been finding the people/messages section to be disorienting myself. I've been reassigning messages to different authors -- i.e., trying to make sure that all the old messages listed under a person's name were actually written by that person, and all the messages written by that person are listed under their name! Going back and forth between a person's message page and the main thread page is annoying... I've been juggling multiple browser windows. Thanks for the suggestion... I may recruit you to play with new, experimental page layouts once I have the chance to create some ;-) —Silent Virgin |

Thursday, March 3, 2005 at 8:04 AM Edited Thursday, March 3, 2005 at 8:14 AM I've been wanting to suggest this for a long time, but never got around to it. No one may care now, but, what the hell. :) Any of you who called boards in your life time probably remember Renegade (and the like, Telegard, Illusion, etc -- COTT LANG PHEARS TIM STRIKE!!). One of the nice features their forum software had was called a "New Scan." A new scan would go through all of the new posts in any of the discussions groups (which in our case would be threads) and would show you each new post in a sequenial fashion. This was good because it automated going through each discussion group that had new messages and reading them. The new scan would do all the work for you, getting and ordering all of the new posts, showing you where they were posted, and letting you reply. In this way, you didn't need to visit each discussion group (threads, in our world) individually to read the new posts in it. You could also configure your new scan to ignore posts in particular discussion groups (threads). The one thing I find particuarlly laborious about reading posts on this site is jumping from thread to thread. For instance, if I log in and see all of the new posts and click on one thread read all of the new posts and comment, then I have to click "Forum" and click another thread, and restart the whole process. If all the threads are short, this isn't so bad. But, loading the entire thread (from the first post to the last) is usually completely unnecessary since I just want to read the new posts. This was particuarlly noticable with the 600+ post picture thread, and all of the other threads that get ~100 posts. If there was something like a "new scan" feature, the entire thread for each thread containing a new post wouldn't need to be loaded, just the new posts from each thread (say with a link to view the entire thread they were posted in, and a link to post in that thread). So, with something like the picture thread, people would have done a new scan, and seen the most recent 10 or 20 new posts since they last logged in, and not had to load the pictures/posts they seen already and weren't going to read -- no overhead. All of the new posts from each thread could probably be displayed on one screen (maybe splitting it up there were more than 50 new posts). This way, I could read all of the new posts at once and not have to go from thead to thread. So, thats my suggestion. :) I have mad perl and sql skilz. So, if there was some way to collaborate on adding this, I would be willing to help. —ZT |

Thursday, March 3, 2005 at 11:53 PM ZT has point... old school BBS was the shiznit.... WAS. Why not embrace the current trend in web based forums and adopt one of the common formats/languages out there? Perhaps put up an ftp section where people post their ftp information that are willing to share. I don't know about the relationship between webpages and ftp protocals, but maybe there's a way to signify which ftps are up and running on the ftp section of the webpage...? And thanks for the site. Monday, June 12, 2006 at 10:03 AM Suggestion: Please diable embedded sound and hotlinking of quicktime that autoplays. actually, this is a really good suggestion. the last thing I need at work is a screaming orgasm clip playing all of a sudden. And I'd like to see more threads dedicated to the best ways to prepare semen cocktails (me- with a splash of vermouth, on the rocks, with a twist) —ProfessorCarbuncle |

Monday, June 12, 2006 at 1:16 PM You don't seem to understand common Forum Courtesy. Leave the old threads to rot. but if people have more suggestions for the suggestion box, I say bring them forth. Silent Virgin may be silent but he still may read new material. —ProfessorCarbuncle |

Monday, June 12, 2006 at 5:44 PM Edited Monday, June 12, 2006 at 5:46 PM What if you post your member, use explicit photos and put down languages?
I smell a loophole! As for suggetions goes, who changes the clip of the week then? Couldn't that person try to read suggestions? Or all we just a bunch of losers on a site that only is maintained in our minds?!?! It's quickly turning into the Matrix. —A Guy in a Chair |

Monday, June 12, 2006 at 8:08 PM An Ode to TLC: Don't go changing, to try and please me, You never let me down before. Don't imagine, you're too familiar, and I won't post here anymore. I would not leave you, in times of trouble, we never could have come this far. I took the good times, I'll take the bad times. And I'll take you just the way you are. Don't go trying, some new fashion. Don't change the colour of your site. You always have my, unspoken passion, although I might not seem to care. I don't want clever, conversation or I clearly wouldn't be looking here, I just want somewhere, that I can post to, I want you just the way you are. I need to know that you will always be the same old website that I knew, I said I love you, and that's forever, and this I promise from my cold, dead heart. I couldn't love you, any better, I love you just the way you are. —Beat It! |
