I went through freshman orientation at UW as well, and I too remember it as a silly feel-good experience.

I agree with bguirk about advising. I added a few quarters onto my school career because I'd taken too many of a particular credit type and not enough of another. It's worth the effort to make sure you're making efficient forward progress.

Also, I wish that someone would have told me that there are consequences to dropping classes, like a handful of "W6" don't look great on your transcript when you're applying to grad schools. Also, by simple math, if you're light on credits in one quarter because you dropped a class, you're going to have to make it up sometime. As a beer-soaked freshman who wandered to classes in sweat pants and a baseball cap, some of this didn't occur to me until much later.

Studying abroad was a wonderful experience for me. Studying at an overseas institution is an opportunity that you might not see later.
