Talkers/Cell Users At The Movies

Let's say the average movie draws 15 people. I think every one of the 15 paying customers would pay an extra dollar to fund a full-time employee, similar to an Air Marshal, that would sit anonymously amongst the patrons and swiftly karate-kick any violators of the rules straight in the face.

If I have to get up and go tattle, I miss the movie and am pissed off for the remainder of the show.

If I have to say something myself, I'm pissed and cannot enjoy the remainder of the show.

It's a no win situation. I went to see The Incredible Hulk at 9:45 just so I could go when it wasn't crowded and two idiots HAD to bring their 2 year old daughter, so she could cry for a good 20 minutes. Also, two young guys sat behind me and gave commentary throughout every scene. I did turn around and tell them to shut the hell up. They did.

Discuss.

Its just a movie! God, I answer my phone all the time during a movie. Well, I would if it rang.

1) Hell no I wouldn't pay an extra dollar, it's already 10.50 at my local theatre, that's plenty enough for a damn movie.

2) 15 people? Here the average movie draws like 50 or 60. And yes I realize you're saying "average", cause some theatres hold up to 200+ people.

i definitely wouldn't say that an average movie draws 15 people, unless you only go to the movies at very odd times.

Well, using your argument, the higher the attendance, the lower the cost for my Movie Theater Respect Enforcement. Really, on a Tuesday night...40 people at this show, three at another. Unless it's opening weekend, the theaters aren't packed anymore.

One of the pleasant side effects of seeing mainly foreign or arty flicks in the theater is that it attracts a better crowd of people--no one has ever talked on the phone during one of these. For more mainstream stuff I find waiting a week and avoiding the 7 PM hour shows on the weekends tends to take care of most problems. If you go opening night during prime time you're just asking for a theater full of douche bag sheep--the kind who probably applaud at the end of a Bruckheimer movie.

most theaters are about $10, but if you're a student, you can save a whole $1.

I've never had anyone talk on the phone at any of the major movies I've seen. I'm always surprised that theaters have to tell people to turn their cell phones off/silence them/not use them during the movie. Most likely the people who are considerate enough to do that don't need the warning, and the tardos who who do use the phone during the movie aren't going to heed the warning anyway. The thing that bothers me is people texting during the movie, it's always distracting watching their screen light up. Things can't be that important to text during the movie, and if they are, why not go outside so you can focus on texting and not be distracted by the movie?

I've seen people answer their phone and say: "Hold on!" Then they run out of the theater to talk to the caller. If it's that important, you can run your ass out of the theater. If you choose to stay and have your conversation during the movie then you deserve to have drinks and popcorn poured over your dumbfuck head.

I hate the people that bring their little children to movie theaters. Unless it's a G movie, they need to stay the fuck home.

The children thing really bothers me as well (if you can't afford a sitter, then you can't afford to go to the movies; seems like a no-brainer to me).

This is something that drives me completely insane.

Best case scenario, somebody forgot to turn off their ringer, their phone goes off and they act embarrassed and apologetic while they kill it (and they've already brought the whole theater into the moment and out of the film).

That one I see more at conferences, classes and other talks.

More often in the theater, some douche will not only have their phone ring, but they'll actually pick the fucker up and answer it in the bloody theater.

As you said, Yesterdaze, there is no good solution. The only way to deal with their disruption, once it happens, is cause another disruption by having somebody talk to or eject them.

One of the pleasant side effects of seeing mainly foreign or arty flicks in the theater is that it attracts a better crowd of people--no one has ever talked on the phone during one of these

I don't see art flicks all that often, but when I do, the difference is incredible. People are just quiet and respectful, and the phone thing generally just doesn't happen.

One time though, I saw it happen. I was watching 21 Grams in the one major art house with more than one screen on this side of Phoenix. Somebody pulled the "I forgot to turn off my ringer" and although he caught and shut it off before the second ring, he was visibly ashamed even in the dark theater, and just about everyone in the place glared at him for a moment.

I like the shame angle. It really seems effective, non-intrusive and somehow it's underutilized most of the time today.

To that end, it actually does seem to help at regular theaters when before the movie they show mock trailers where the action gets interrupted by the Nokia tones and the action is disrupted and the whole cast glares.

I've never had the problems you guys are talking about. Your society is lame!

on that note, it's interesting that acm323 has that same "fuck you, what you gonna do?!" attitude here even though people treating each other like that all the time is why you can't even get common courtesy when you try to relax at a theatre.
If you want to have a nice public environment, you have to treat the public nice. That means helping the poor and struggling who need help. That means embracing all the things that you deride as being communist.
acm, your capitalist ass should buy yourself a projector and sit home watching movies by yourself.

I usually go to a showing between 7 and 9 the day something opens, and I've never heard anyone's phone go off. The theater's usually pretty empty, though. A 15-person average seems low, but I think that's about how many people are usually there.

Wow, amazing anecdote. I was hanging on every word.

I was hoping it would never end.

But it did.

And now I'm depressed.

I like the Air Marshall idea...even though I wouldn't be able to tattle on people anymore. I love doing that.
