Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at 8:14 PM Edited Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at 8:14 PM Which paper that you have written are you most proud of? reaction paper to mickey mouse monopoly and a 11 page paper on female genital mutilation. Which paper that you have written was most fun to write and/or research? FGM Anybody have any papers from school that they want to share? I'll paste it here(?) This paper seems like it was written by a retarded 3rd grader.lol Adam loves those. Mickey Mouse Monopoly Video The media influences our thoughts and ideas on gender and ethnic stereotyping. Powerful corporations such as Disney can play an important role in a child’s thinking. Since children are too vain to think as adults, they might believe everything that the media installs upon them. This documentary focuses on how these dangerous, yet innocent messages can have a great impact on a child’s mind.
I thought this documentary was somewhat fair in singling out Disney for its scrutiny. Although I do not personally hold Disney accountable for all the violence, and stereotypes perceived by children, I do believe that they are sending out dangerous messages in their role of gender and ethnic portrayals in their classic movies. Previous to viewing this documentary, the messages have never been brought to my attention, but now that I have witnessed the scenes from particular movies like “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin”, I now understand what type of messages Disney might be sending. I believe that most people would be neutral on their stand on this documentary. Some might dismiss the entire documentary and say that they’re looking too closely into it, and others might agree with one or two ideas being presented. The reason why most people are passionate about Disney’s role in the media is because they might have been raised by Disney’s classic films or that they might have children who watch the Disney channel. Disney is a huge part of mainstream American culture and it will always have an impact on future generations. I believe the Walt Disney Company might try to defend itself by providing polls which state that most parents are happy with what their children see in Disney movies, or that their messages in movies are unintentional.
The gender traits and behavior portrayed in classic Disney movies are extremely stereotypical. The males are either all masculine heroes or angry beasts, and most the female characters in almost every Disney classic movie portrays the female in a sexualized way. The females are seen as submissive and gentle whose responsibly is it to be gentle and do housework chores. In movies such as “Beauty and the Beast”, “Aladdin”, and Little Mermaid”, all the females are portrayed as being overly feminine and they use their sexuality in order to achieve their goals. I believe that this is a dangerous message to send out to young girls who are in the process of devolving and discovering what femininity is about. I don’t believe that these gender stereotypes have significantly changed over the years. In the past there have been a few movies like “Mulan” that show the female character in a stronger view, but overall not much have changed.
Disney has failed to portray ethnic characters in a positive or accurate way. In movies such as “Oliver and Company”, the Chihuahua speaks in a Spanish accent and resembles the stereotypical “Latin Lover” personality. They show him stealing cars, and being corrupt. In “Tarzan”, the African-American community is being targeted as monkeys in the movie, and Tarzan, being the white male shows them how to live in the jungle. They make the monkeys speak like inner-city black men. Disney is also at fault for inaccurately portraying cultural and religious attitudes, for example in the movie “Aladdin”, they show a merchant getting upset and attempting to cut off Princess Jasmine’s hand for taking an apple. In the Islam religion it is acceptable to take food if you’re needy. In fact the Qur’an says that the merchants should provide food for the less-fortunate. I believe that Disney is most stereotypical when portraying the African-American characters. They either show them as being ghetto and flashy or in primate form like in “Tarzan”
I do believe that Disney’s films have become less-stereotypical and racist over the years, but I do feel like they need more improvement when portraying ethnic characters. I believe that Disney’s classic movies should not be re-released. They are too stereotypical in many areas. They best way to handle these movies would be if the parent sits down with the child, watches the movie with them and points out what’s right or wrong. Or to simply not allow their children to watch them. —adams_babymomma |

Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at 2:04 AM i wrote a paper this year for my constitutional law class about libel laws in regards to satire and parody. that was a good one. my favorite project was freshman year when i wrote a paper defending porn and saying that it can be empowering for women. then we had to make a presentation about our research and i showed a very graphic porn clip in my class. it was slightly embarrassing and there were some awkward giggles, but i like to think of it as one of my bravest moments. only one person complained and i sent her a private email basically telling her to grow up. i had warned everyone about the content ahead of time. —mandee |

Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at 8:15 AM Paper highlights of my recent stay in school: 45+ pages along with two other writers on custom software and the Thai courts. Prof gave us an A+ and also wrote that if any of us wanted to a recommendation for a PhD program to come to him. It was a pain in the ass to write, but it was really good practice for the "real world." 20 pages on municipal wi-fi projects. It might get published. 4 pages on bio-fuels policy from the point of view of the NRDC 20 pages on Internet Poker policy of the US and Antigua. Published in a crappy little student journal. My favorite was about 5 pages from an assignment where we were to create "democratic objects." I came up with children's games like the Magic 8-ball of Democracy and Candidate Concentration (toys). It was a fun assignment. I'd link it if shitlick weren't around. —bguirk |

Most proud of the 3-4 page poetry analysis paper that I got my first perfect paper on in AP Literature...College Level Course with a teacher who'd been pushing us all year and is known as one of the tougher graders in the school.

Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at 9:58 AM Which paper that you have written was most fun to write and/or research? the final paper about Pulp Fiction. Which paper that you have written are you most proud of? There was one where I had to write as a character from a book we were reading in class and I got an A+ on it, the prof said I "crawled into the character's skin". Anybody have any papers from school that they want to share? Here's mine on Dr. Drew's celebrity narcissism study and comparing a news article about it to the actual study: This newspaper article by Robin Abcarian, from the Los Angeles Times, republished on the Mail Tribune website, says that a study done on celebrity narcissism by Dr. Drew Pinsky and S. Mark Young shows that celebrities are more narcissistic than regular people. The conclusion Dr. Pinsky and Mr. Young drew was that people who become celebrities tend to seek out fame, because they are narcissistic, rather than starting out not narcissistic, having fame come to them, and then becoming narcissistic after becoming famous. Dr. Drew explained the reasoning behind the study in this article as: “I guess we chose to focus on narcissism because you keep hearing and reading in publications all this speculation about how these people acquire narcissistic tendencies by virtue of being celebrities. To say celebrity is the reason for their pathologies is ridiculous. Their greatest fear is losing their celebrity status” (Abcarian, 2006). The article implies that celebrities have always been assumed to be narcissistic, quoting the former cohost of Loveline, Adam Carolla: “Who cares? Is this groundbreaking, that celebrities are narcissistic? I mean, this is like you found out Liberace was gay” (Abcarian, 2006). However, Dr. Drew said that the study is groundbreaking due to the fact that narcissism in celebrities hadn’t been studied before, since celebrities are usually insulated by publicists, agents, and managers. The article says the study found that narcissism differed in celebrities by gender and type of celebrity: “Contrary to the general population, women celebrities, across the board, were more narcissistic than males (19.26 versus 17.27). Musicians – who have the highest skill level – are the least narcissistic celebrity group, while reality TV stars, the least talented or skilled group, are the most narcissistic” (Abcarian, 2006). Also, the article gives data on the average for the Narcissism Personality Inventory for Americans, which is 15.3 out of 40 possible, and it says celebrities’ average was 17.8. The article says that 200 celebrities were studied over 20 months. Each was a guest on Loveline and given the Narcissistic Personality Inventory. Celebrities were given the Inventory at the beginning of the show, according to Mr. Carolla: “It drove me insane because when celebrities would sit down, Drew would present them with this paperwork and they would start to fill it out and the show would begin and I would be, like, ‘What’s it like being out on the road 10 months a year?’ and the guy would be busily filling out some sheet or something and he’d go, ‘Oh, it’s OK.’ Eventually, I would start yelling at Drew….it caused many an off-air fight” (Abcarian, 2006). Overall, I would give this article an A on accurately representing the research findings. I appreciated the detail given to the results of the study, and the breakdown on differences between narcissism in celebrities, versus the narcissism scores of regular Americans. Also I enjoyed seeing the differences between types of celebrities broken down in terms of greater versus lesser narcissism according to what type of celebrity they were (musician, reality TV star, etc.), as well as their gender. I would add the definition of narcissism to the article, since after reading the article, I wondered what exactly narcissism was. After I read the research, I found that normal narcissism was defined in the article as “characterized by self-centeredness, self-aggrandizement, and a manipulative interpersonal orientation” (Young & Pinsky, 2006).
