The best:
U2 - All of the ones I've been to have been amazing
Better Than Ezra - Always a great live show
INXS - A couple of months before he hung himself
Prince - His "comeback tour" about four years ago
Billy Joel/Elton John

Most bizarre in retrospect, but great at the time:
Club MTV To Go Tour around 1989 featuring: Tone Loc, Paula Abdul, Information Society, Milli Vanilli, Wrecks N Effect and a couple of others that I don't remember hosted by 'Downtown' Julie Brown

Worst:
Dave Matthews Band - It wasn't that they were really bad, but I was hyped because everyone swears by their live shows as some phenomenal experience and it was a huge letdown. Apparently it was an off night for them.

Beat It!

Green Day - as good as Adam said they were

Live - decent
BNL - did a pretty good job
Shakira - surprisingly good

Paula Abdul - didn't impress me all that much (and I had a huge crush on her at the time).

The only one I've ever been to was when Liz and I went to see Flogging Molly play on the HUB lawn during Dawg Daze, so I guess that wins by default.

marilyn manson - saw him at a small club about 3 days before antichrist superstar was released. saw him 2 other times, but this one was best.
that band was hungry, just on the brink of stardom.

mr. bungle - saw them at a small club in 1999.
couldn't believe what they were pulling off live. probably my favorite and mos def the best show of musicianship i've ever seen.

megadeth - youthanasia tour. met the band - very cool. second best show i've seen as far as technical wizardry/musicianship.

melvins - seen them 3 times at a small club, but the time supporting "stoner witch" was the best.

faith no more - caught them on their final tour ever at a small club supporting "album of the year".

porno for pyros - saw them at a small club on their "good god's urge" cd. i was inches away from perry farrell!!!

richie hawtin - saw him in 2001. he had about 500 people mesmerized with awesome techno.

dj tommie sunshine - i saw this fairly unknown dj on a lot of drugs at least twice. consequently, i associate him with the best music of any dj i've ever heard/seen.

chemical brothers - sometime in '99. the promoters asked me if i had any coke for the group backstage. unfortunately i didn't.

green velvet - as dj cajmere. would have rather seen him with the green wig doing a live PA, but his dj skills and track selection are still above par.

dj funk - twice. the time in early 2000 at a packed rave called "lots o luv" was the best. he's a shitty dj, but when you're having so much fun dancing to booty house, you don't notice.

stunt rock - little known hardcore/noisecore/drill n bass dj from the wisconsin area, slamming jim beam while playing at the (now defunct) legendary midwest, labor day fest "furthur" doing a live PA

dan doormouse - much like stunt rock, but better known.

prince - purple rain tour. sheila e opened.
blew my 10 year old mind.

NIN - downward spiral tour. saw this at a large theater, wasn't very close, but still awesome.
the video for hurt came from this tour. very awesome visuals projected behind trent.

skinny puppy - saw them at a small club in 2004. this was the last band i've seen live. would have rather seen them circa 1990, but they were still awesome. the draw backs were that they played some songs off the cd they were supporting at the time and threy sucked. skinny puppy post dewayne goettel just isn't the same.

I don't enjoy live shows. Being around other people, being in the moment, these are bad things... for me. Somewhat.

Let's see...

Saw my cousin's band in mid 99. They sounded very heavy live. So odd and cool. Quite enjoy.

Paris Combo played at the Novotel hotel in February 2000. We sat in chairs by a pool, with glass panels overlooking Civic. They were swell. I was the only person there alone. Lots of couples, lots of old people. I didn't have any of their records at the time. Still don't, mein gott. It's odd experiencing music you don't know in a language you don't understand.
I love Paris Combo.

Balked at seeing Skinlab and Skulker in mid 2000. Regrets regrets.
Did see Monique Brumby, Diana Ah Naid and Deborah Conway together in September 2000. It was a rainy Friday night. I sat lonely at my large wooden booth. Monique's a cappella bounced off the amazing acoustics of the place so much it hurt my ears. It was a challenging night.

Saw Wendy Rule at the end of that year. Her wicca talk made me roll my eyes but at the same time she had a sense of humour. She cast a circle and was talking about it when loud laughter came from some guys playing pool so she said that maybe the circle only extends as far as the pool table.
Her voice was very loud, clear and evocative. It got haunting enough.

In mid 2001 I saw some jam band I can't remember. I do remember that I was with my brother, cousin and cousin. It was too loud and I didn't have ear plugs so I left and waited outside. She followed me and sat with me for awhile. A drunk young dude with a beer gut hanging out of his open shirt tried to chat her up. Another horrible night. Memorable, yes.

In November 2005 I saw Hieronymus IX and the Firecock Scientists. It was a very disorganized night and their only gig to date. I ended up working the door of the club. It was weird. I wasn't dressed up, had no ID, had never been to that club before... barely been out of an evening since I was a kid and I'm charging admission to strangers and... well it felt weirder than it perhaps sounds. Raf read a lot of his writings out to an astonished crowd and Himali performed a cover of Tori Amos' take on Smells Like Teen Spirit. That's the only time I've enjoyed that song.

April 2006 I saw Himali's ex-band in a smoky grimy pub called The Phoenix. It would be good if someone burned that place down. I don't remember the band's name. The songs weren't that great. Her keyboards and vocals were hard to make out over the generic gig musician drums and bass etc. Odd to see her perform, because she is so completely normal. I pretty much forget she's capable of jumping up on stage and being a performer. This is as lousy as it gets because all the other acts are so shit and it's so crowded with people drinking and chatting and smoking and just being repulsive and lame. Such a scene almost demands nihilism.

Ah, September 2006. I saw Michael Franti at the ANU. The ticket was about 60 dollars but I walked out half way through the first song. The vibe of the crowd, and the mechanism of touring, and god knows what else were shitting me to tears. It was a long wait before the show was over. 3 hours or so of pacing back and forth around the campus waiting for my brother, Raf and TJ to get fed up and leave. I love Home. I'd probably love the other records if I got to them. There's something about this Emotion On Demand thing that I hate so much, and it's never more evident than in a live music show.
About a month later, in the same location, I saw The Hampdens. The stage was rearranged. I was now standing where Michael Franti had been and the music was coming from where the crowd was before. I can't remember the name of the singer from the Hampdens but she's kind of like the flawless Delta Goodrem. She's the same age, same 5'10 height, with the same long brown hair that Delta had when she first got famous. She never sold out by doing produced pop or a soap opera. That's Delta's main flaw. That, and being silly enough to get a nose job. Hmm. This show was painful too. The Hampdens have an EP called "So Young It Hurts". If that phrase touches you at all then you'll understand why it's hard to endure this music. Whereas most music is too little to bother with, too dull, not enough, The Hampdens make music that is too much. I don't know what to do with the feelings that well up inside. What do I do with them?

At the end of March 2007 I saw Arrested Development. Hated the opening act. He was trying to get everyone into the act and said not to just stand there with crossed arms and looked pointedly at me. I stared right back. Fuck him, if he made something that was moving I'd move. Only one of his songs was less than embarrassing.
The new AD music playing on CD while AD set up sounded really cool. Being a broke loser sucks. Then they came out and everyone was into it but me. I didn't really want to memory trip. They played every song off 3 Years... except for the instrumental and the intro and possibly they skipped Washed Away too. Speech is an amazing performer. Just as good as the record. They're obviously a group who just set up equipment to record how they actually sound. It's a pity his solo career has bombed though, he made really good solo records.
Less than a week later I saw PM Dawn in Sydney. An odd coincidence since AD and PM are the big two from way back. My first two CDs and only two artists for 1995. What a year. Gosh.
The trip was so weak. I was even less willing to get emotional than with AD because she was there. She likes PM Dawn, because Raf showed her. Raf knew PM from us. So she knew from me. Prince Be is just as crazy as Speech. But they're broke I guess; his cousin or whoever this new guy was had only a laptop or something for instrumental backup. Such a numbing depressing trip. What can you do when you meet them?
Meeting them was odd. I never expected them to be so huge. Prince Be is at least 6'5. I don't want to kill the Golden Goose.

About a week later was Chanel Cole. Trying to prove to myself that I don't give a fuck, I put my hand up for her participation thing and did the Pimp of the Year Acceptance Speech from I'm Gonna Git You Sucka. Just as Prince Be was surprisingly tall, Chanel was surprisingly short. I could have her though. If it came to it in a scrap, I could have her. ???????
Did mostly covers. Enjoyed, but wanted more. The last couple of songs were an original and a cover of a song I've never heard. Both touchingly depressing. I think I enjoy music more when I don't know it. Play your hits... no don't. I don't know.
But this was also the same as going to a party to try and meet a girl I like. Against the logic, shoulder into the blizzard, I went. Of course nothing became.
However she did move to Canberra some time last year so hope/against/hope flickers pathetically on. Jesus fucking christ.

Ah, October 2007. That was another trip. A bit further, but in the opposite direction. Melbourne, Nick Cave. I think I was enjoying it. Nick Cave is so bald these days. The music for Grinderman was hot. I lost focus when two girls who looked hot enough in the darkness started dancing all over me. One grabbed my arm and told me to dance at one point but I didn't. Being smashed so often was distracting. Obviously middling size girls like them can't do much to me, even in my dilapidated state, but they elbowed me in the face a couple of times and almost hit my poor sensitive nose. That would have sucked. Werid being a few metres away from Nick Cave. Couldn't say what it means. Nothing, I guess.
I think I'm wearing the same clothes from that night as I write this now. Another pointless coincidence.
His Bad Seeds set sucked so bad. The crowd were annoying him, I guess, and I was passing out because I'd slept so little that week and been awake since before dawn.
His songs are so good but again, this whole On Demand thing is so fucking weak. I paid money, let's be entertained. No, let's not. Let's be miserable. Let's not have our moment in the sun.

Chanel again February this year. Sam was there. Did she see me? Is she a lesbian? Time will tell. Sooner or later, time will tell. No it won't. Shut the fuck up.
I haven't seen anything since then. Barry Adamson is playing in Melbourne soon but I don't want to go. I don't intend to go to anything more until things are good. Intentions are laughable.
This is actually abridged. There are a handful more of what would pass for anecdotes. Nobody cares! Incomplete history. Broken account of a broken account.
Things were going to be so different to this.

lol,

1) Well I already have a bias against them because I think they suck, and I hate their straight-edge crap, plus every song is so political, I've had enough of bands telling me who to vote for, take a page out of Three Days Grace's book and stick to singing about pain and depression etc. To answer your question of why they sucked live, it was the singer dude, who for the record is one ugly motherfucker, I hate just looking at his face, and he has the same cock-eyed pose in every picture:

Yeaaaaah, as for his actual singing, it SUCKS, it sounds like a cover band, and he's just terrible. His vocals are obviously heavily produced because he can not bring it live. He sucks. And when he palyed "Swing Life Away", he couldn't even play the chords right.

2) nahhhh I haven't oh man that's right you live in nawlins, lucky sonovabitch. I would definitely drop a G to go one day though if I could afford it. Thad be sooo amazing.

3) Well the bassist was drunk as helllll and he kept strumming random notes and just stumbling around, so they really sucked a lot. It was the opening band for 311 in Pismo Beach in 2006. But they just kinda blew. BUT I saw them again at Warped Tour 2007, and they killed the show man, so I regained my respect for them, they had the whole crowd singing along it was a great experience.

Off the top of my head....

Best:

Hatebreed (all time fav show. music was great and the energy was insane)
Lollipop Lust Kill (first time a band sounded better live than on cd)
Poison The Well (got to sing Nerdy with them)
Cold (just one of my fav bands, saw them multiple times live and loved each time)
Union Underground (didnt really know who they were at the time but loved their live show)
Mushroomhead (fun to watch)
Biohazard (just pure crazy show)

Weirdest:

ICP (i saw them with a friend and some religious protestors called in a bomb threat cancelling the show and starting a riot. I wound up on the news that night)
Mindless Self Indulgence (now they are pretty much known but back in 1999 nobody knew who they were and they would open for random bands and come on stage and pee in a cup then drink it or make out with guys in the audience. Usually resulting in boos from the crowd)

Worst:
A Static Lullaby (singer was obnoxiously drunk)
My Chemicle Romance (back when the singer was too fat to make it through a song without gasping for air)
40 Below Summer (sounded decent live but the singer was the most annoyingly conceided person i've ever seen)
30 Seconds to Mars (saw twice and both times Jared sounded HORRIBLE. he did claim to be sick both times tho...)

AKA Who?

in case you didn't know:

How 10 Bands Got Their Names

1. Modest Mouse comes from the Virginia Woolf story The Mark on the Wall. There’s a quote that says, “Even in the minds of modest, mouse-coloured people…”

2. a-ha got their name because it means the same thing in multiple languages.

3. Duran Duran took their name from the villain in the movie Barbarella – Dr. Durand-Durand.

4. R.E.M. was named when Michael Stipe opened the dictionary and randomly pointed to a word.

5. The Pogues were originally called Pogue Mahone, which is Gaelic for “kiss my arse.” It was shortened later.

6. The Bay City Rollers, are, as you might suspect, named after Bay City, Michigan. But none of the band members are actually from Bay City (They’re Scottish); the city was just plucked from the map.

7. The Killers took their name from a fictional band. The “band” was featured in the New Order music video for their song “Crystal”.

8. 10,000 Maniacs adapted their band name from the horror movie Two Thousand Maniacs.

9. Steely Dan is named after an… erm… adult toy… in the William S. Burroughs novel Naked Lunch.

10. Flight of the Conchords came about when Bret, one of the band members, had a dream about flying guitars that looked like Concordes. He was telling the other band member about it and the name was invented. They went with “Chord” instead of “cord” as sort of a tribute to the Beatles who used “beat” instead of “beet”.

chumbawumba was named from when it was thought that if you locked a bunch of monkeys in a room with a typewriter, they would be able to type the works of shakespeare. the band looked through the papers from the monkeys and the only thing they could read from it was chumbawumba.

Just got home from Cake. It was Xan McCurdy's birthday today so they had, uh, cake. I stuck around and had some of Cake's cake. Then I saw him again at the casino and giggled like a school girl. Cake are fucking rock GAWDS.

Plus, it occurred to me that perhaps I should rethink the Ministry thing. I was pharmaceutically enhanced at the time so that could have played a role in my opinion. Other shows too, but I think Lollapalooza was the only show I've seen under that particular influence.

ps I hate you for having seen Steely Dan and The Soul of John Black.

Does it help if my girlfriend nearly ruined Steely Dan for me?

Totally. I'm gonna get him all juiced up in DC and do weird things to him. He'll need YEARS of therapy. And maybe an operation.

I was dreading that trip, but now...

It was an awesome show, I'm really sorry you had to miss it. Two chicks had a dance-off for a cherry tree AND there was actual birthday cake. One odd thing though, I noticed that John McCrea checked his cell phone a couple times during the show. It was such a fun outing, Cake is ALWAYS a good time. It sprinkled just a tiny bit at the very beginning of the show but literally for just a few seconds, after that it was a perfect evening all around.

6. The Bay City Rollers, are, as you might suspect, named after Bay City, Michigan. But none of the band members are actually from Bay City (They’re Scottish); the city was just plucked from the map.

I could've sworn I've heard Adam mention this on LL a long ass time ago...they closed their eyes and just pointed to a US map...anyway...anfernee...I asked about Rise Against cause they're like the "major" band for this summer's Warped Tour...I'm going to the Aug. 15th show in Mountain View, CA...so I guess I shouldn't have any high hopes about seeing them...Pepper...man I saw them muthafuckas at last yrs Warped in Pomona, and goddamn talk about fuckin insanity...and I saw em at the House of Blues in Dallas with The Expendables...they've always been one of my favorites...311 Day...I've only been once...2004...I was only 15 at the time, so it was greatest fuckn thing I had ever seen in my life at that point...and I actually live about 2.5 hrs from New Orleans in Lafayette, La...

Dude, the Expendables? I can't believe you've heard of them. I freaking love them. Slightly Stoopid is just as good. I would love to see a show with the Expendables, Slightly Stoopid, 311, The Wailers, Pepper, and Kottonmouth Kings, that would be like heaven. on a bun.

Wow, where to start. Okay, when a man and a woman really like each other they might decide to make a baby. The man and woman first disrobe and...jeez, your mother really should be handling this...

That is so cool! My in-laws live in the highlands also. My baby girl is 16 months old and I have two that are nearly teenagers now, they'll be 12 and 13 very soon. Glad to hear she's feeling better. That's so neat, knowing a fellow TLC'r is right here.... hmmm... you know I'm all socially phobic, right? I may have to move now. Heh.

Anyhow, back to the point of the thread:

I haven't been to that many concerts because I don't like loud drunk people, but:

1. Tom Petty in 1999, the opening act was Lucinda Williams who I didn't like very much, but then Petty came out and it was a great show, played for three straight hours with costume changes and set changes and 2 encores. It was great. Also the guy in the row ahead of me was passing around a huge blunt but I didn't take it.

2. A Flock of Seagulls.
