A family with kids just moved into the next apartment and they are so fucking loud. One of the kids screams constantly and now they're all watching POTC and one of the kids is laughing hysterically at everything. I think he might be autistic. If they do this during the day while I'm trying to sleep I will reign hell down on them.

Doesn't have anything to do with cake, I'm just pointing it out.

I don't get why you'd rent in upstate NY when you can get giant houses for 100k. That's less than $700 a month in mortgage or you could get 1100 square feet for 50k. I'd kill for those prices.

when you can get giant houses for 100k.

Not here, you can't. There are no "giant houses" and the only nice houses nearby are closer to the million mark.

We never planned to settle down here permanently, so it's really not worth the trouble of finding a house anyway. The main priority was staying close to Mike's family.

Yeah, it's obvious now that you spell it out. I was stuck on kids TV shows and I don't know enough of them.

I still haven't seen the third one, though I have the DVD. I do this a lot, I'll be dying to see a movie and go buy the DVD and then wait three months to actually watch it.

Maybe you live in nice burb, but the data tells a different story about home prices in NY

Major Upstate NY 2008 median home prices:

Syracuse: 78k
Rochester: 96k
Buffalo: 101k

NW major cities median home prices:

Portland: 215k
Seattle: 308k

Nice and cheap to get a house out there.

Maybe you live in nice burb

Right on the edge of the "expensive" neighborhood. The houses in the rest of town aren't any places you'd want to live. Many of them are literally falling apart.

Neither of us has any credit for mortgage and we don't plan to stay. The only cheap houses that don't have porches rotting off are in the middle of nowhere, and we're about 5-10 minutes from downtown right now. I don't think your research accurately represents what it's actually like to be in the market for a house here, but then again I'm not, so I don't really know/care.

yeah I'm dieting but it's barely working. I hate it when everyone tells me I'm not fat just to be nice. ugh. the fact that everyone who hates me immediately goes for the "fat" angle is kind of a hint. mike's going to kill me when he reads this. I'm not really allowed to call myself fat anymore, but goddamn!

let's go back to discussing unrealistic house prices, that was much less uncomfortable.

Anyway, telling a girl she's fat is a universal put down because it always works.

I know, but nobody would call chix0r fat no matter how much they hated her, because it just doesn't make sense. There has to be something in it.

Maybe "fat" just has too many negative connotations now so no one can use it. Will you let me have "overweight?" I have gained a lot since I got here (40lbs according to the bizarro world scale at Planned Parenthood) and that's what I'm trying to lose right now.

Being called fat actually bothers me less than the other #1 insult, androgynous. I've gotten that from lots of people on lots of different boards. i was seriously going to make a hangout of the boards on chuck palahniuk's site, but when I posted a picture about ten people were like "is that a boy or a girl lol. i think it has tits i dunno." I decided I didn't really need that kind of environment in my life, but seriously. people are fucking douchebags also I am fat and genderless.

Contrast that with the Douglas Coupland community which I could so totally get laid multiple times through if I didn't have scruples.

Yeah I think it's one of those unfortunate cases where his books attract a bunch of horrible people who hate everyone. There is this one pretentious douche who shows up to a bunch of chuck's book signings and tries to dominate the entire night. chuck hates him. on the "postcards from the future" dvd you can see the veiled rage as he speaks about his fan, and one of these days he is just going to cut loose on the guy like he did with those loud campers on the weekend that led to the injuries that led to fight club.

FWIW my wife and I both applied to Syracuse for grad school, but one of us didn't get in (ahem). I looked at buying houses out there back in 2006 and was shocked at how cheaply you could land a decent house (nice porch and all) in what I was told was a decent area for under 60k. My definition of decent is more than 1000 square feet and I don't have to do any work on it other than paint or rip up some carpet when I move in. For SUNY Buffalo I could get a nice brick house with a garage 4 miles from school for something like 70k. The difference between the two real estate wise was that I wouldn't expect to ever be able to sell a Buffalo house in this or maybe even the next decade while Syracuse houses appreciate a little.

what I was told was a decent area

This is the material point. Without knowing exactly what area I can't possibly figure out why you found yourself in that enviable situation. also everyone has a porch here so a porch isn't really a big selling point. It's like "oh, and your house has windows!" thanks.

Buffalo is a completely different issue.

Where are you two lovebirds off to?

Depends on where Mike's work expands to. If they build on the land near Fenway Park that they've just bought, then probably Boston (yes I know it's a nightmare to live/work/pay for car insurance there, but it's a small sacrifice to make in return for not living in 'cuse.)

Fat... weakness, distortion, illness...
Why are you fat? Do you look good? How does it affect practical day to day mechanical existence?
She's fat. Better thin? Doubt it. Maybe as good. She's lucky, her face doesn't look that fat. Pound-that-doughy body. Heaven milkshake.
Fuck, she's fat too. Probably looked better thin. Younger. Bad now? No. Doesn't curmudgeon her radiant personality. Could I look her in the eye, and the other eye, and insult her "fat!"? No. Yes. Yes! Fucking yes! Never. Maybe. Probably. I doubt it.

I think that you Liz are fat. It looks unhealthy and your face doesn't look good fat. I don't care that you are fat because in this medium it is entirely irrelevant. In real life it wouldn't be overly important either, it's not like we're running a relay event. However if I knew you in real life I would try to push you towards healthier habits. Even if you slapped me in the face for it many times over. Actually then probably not so much, since I wouldn't choose to live with a psycho.
I try to push myself towards being fitter and do often slap myself in the face, literally and figuratively. So it's not hypocrisy to encourage other people to eschew my current lifestyle?
Fitness of the mind too... what are we doing, wasting so much time?

Ah, I remember. Okay, so the taunts of "fat" are true because they come from insulters and wouldn't make sense for Caitlin but taunting with an undeniably true fact doesn't guarantee negativity. I mean, [ooh on user name topic] Majandra said she was teased all through school for her big pouty lips when obviously they are a positive. I'm sure Lena has been teased about her nose. A big nose is more subjective.
I guess it comes down to people teasing having motives and perspectives and facts that combine to project negativity at another person. The unassailability of one of those can hide the foulness or folly of the others.
I guess that means that being fat is only a problem for you if it's a problem for you. The same people that want and need to resort to calling you on being fat, or trying to, are the ones who tease beautiful kids for having different yet positive features, and tease others for having different features neither positive or negative.
Such psionic energy is neither intelligent nor proud.

Speaking of mind blowing, has anyone else heard the sounds made by humpback whales when they are hunting fish? I saw it on a documentary yesterday and it is the most disturbing natural sound I have ever heard. It's worse than any of those snarl and squeal mixes that they use to represent dinosaurs in Jurassic Park.
It's the sounds they make while creating bubble nets. I need to find samples of that sound.
