I am very angry

shakrat

+

Thursday, March 6, 2008 at 6:38 PM

I work in a place with very little office politics, yet today I heard some people talking shit about me behind my back. I am very angry, but yelling is not an option. Reprisal seems unlikely and is at odds with my values. Still I have feelings of anger, betrayal, spite, etc. I would appreciate everyone's thoughts on things I can do to handle these feelings. I do not want to just repress them and pretend everything's OK. Consider the fact that I'm posting this on TLC as evidence of how confused I am.

What did they say?

Was the stuff they were saying true?

Were they talking about something you told someone in confidence?

I talk shit about some of my coworkers. One of my coworkers has a mouth full of rotting teeth and terrible hygeine. If she overheard me talking about her I wouldn't really care...because everything I said was true!

Hope this helps.

I wouldn't take it personally. I'm a live and let live type of guy. Usually it's not worth the energy to get angry over something.

adam would tell callers that the best way to get even was to be successful and have a good life.

let the haters wallow in their hate, and see what it gets them.

unless, it's justified. then maybe you should ask yourself if there is in fact room for improvement.

Good questions, acm:

They were talking about a small thing that I fucked up. It is true that I fucked it up.

After I overheard this stuff I went to the main person involved and politely told her that if she had something to say she should say it to me. I'm still angry though.

There is definitely room for improvement, and I acknowledged that to her. I'm just pissed 'cause this is something she would never bring up with me to me face, so she's not exactly helping the situation. Maybe it's unfounded anger and they were justified in bitching. Still, I don't feel I can trust these people anymore.

You can't trust them. I had a similar situation happen last week. I came very close to accepting the consequences and doing something very bad. But I didn't. The best thing you can do is smile to their face make like everything is good, and just remember who/what they are. And if you get a chance to get dirt on them, then do it, and save it for a rainy day. That's what I do/did, and have at my disposal now.

I've been thinking about posting something almost exactly like this for the last... three months. If it's anything like what I'm going through, yeah, it sucks.

Here's some of the things I've done....

  • I go over the Four Stabilizing Questions from GROW.
  • I go over the Eight Verses for Training The Mind, remembering what the Dalai Lama said when I first heard him talk about them -- that you also need to take action to prevent them from harming you again.
  • I've been trying not to "take it personally," remembering that people sometimes gossip because of their own insecurities, that in the long-run rejection is usually protection, and that the best revenge is to live a good life.
  • I practice, though not very often, metta meditation (mp3).

This only applies to restaurant managers and bartenders. Wait and kitchen staff positions are hit or miss. Bussers and dishwashers are out of luck.

The period in my life when I got the most tail was when I was bartending.

Its all about bartending 1 or 2 nights a week, and then going BACK to the bar on your off nights. That way your free to talk to the specific chicks your trying to bang, and the bartender on duty hooks you up for free all night, so buying chicks drinks is pretty much free. I miss bartending actually. I think id do it agin if I could, even If i had tons of money and didnt need the tips.

I would bartend again if I didn't have to open (and do all the crappy set up that goes with it) or close (and have to all the crappy cleaning at the end of the night. )

Though I did get tired of babysitting drunks and being considered somewhat responsible legally for their actions after leaving the bar (though I never actually had anything like that happen - I did get to Baker Act a lady).

I always had more fun working the service bar and just making drinks and talking with the servers.
