Monday, March 3, 2008 at 9:38 PM Edited Monday, March 3, 2008 at 9:42 PM clearly, college degrees, in general, aren't useless. i don't need a bunch of graphs to tell me that. DUH i am saying that for YOU, in particular, it PROBABLY won't do much. I will 1/2 agree with you, and 1/2 disagree with you. In regard to me personally, a degree wont do much in the sense that im likely to pursue my own business pursuits regardless of what salary I can get. And you are RIGHT. The website, the key chains, blah blah, all those were excellent ideas that I wouldve followed through with if I had 1 thing: MONEY Furthermore, people/investors are more likely to lned you money for a business plan if you have a business degree. Also, I feel that now that I have a marketing degree (on the way) I am 100,000 Times more prepared than I ever couldve been without all this education. it won't do anything that 7 years spent in the workforce (instead of puttering around in school) couldn't have done. I think your forgeting the fact that I have NOT been puttering around in school for 7 years. Ive had a full time job the entire time. Dont you rememeber when I owned that Garage Door company for 2 years? I made $20,000 doing that, all on my own, while going to school. You call THAT, puttering around? I call that REAL WORLD BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE. i've just always heard a LOT of talk from you and not a whole lot of results. Again your right but the only reason you havent seen results is becasue I spend 50 GOD DAMN hours a week readig, studying, going to class, etc etc...... I DONT HAVE TIME to do everyting that ive been wanting to do. Its called delayed gratification. I study now, and live the life of a broke ass with no job, becasue LATER ill be able to have a huge salary (if i decide to get a job), and ill be in a better position to make smart business decisions and improve my chances of being successful in my ventures. btw... didnt I write a KICK ASS proposal last summer that even a seasoned vet said "wow, it really looks like you did your homework on this one."... had it not been for my EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE, that proposal would have sucked a fuck.
like I said earlier, your HALF right, and HALF wrong. You are not Adam. before I die I just want you to admit (and KNOW) that you are not ALWAYS right, ALL the time, about EVERYTHING.

Not sure what my *best* subject would be, but as far as grades go, I think virology was the thing that I did best in. As for the value of a degree - in my opinion, if you're looking at it as an investment, and you're only in it for money, then unless you're going after something like an MBA, you're probably wasting your time - you could probably make as much or more just by getting into the right thing and spending the same amount of time and effort pursuing that. You should do advanced education if it's something that interests you and you value learning for its own sake. If you do that, you'll be happier and the money will probably work itself out anyway (though there are certainly plenty of fields like drama and art where you're as likely to end up earning less after you get more education than you would have without it as you are to end up earning more). —anobody |

I LOVE learnign about market strategy, ad positions, etc... Again, i will give credit to Airking and say that in reality a degree doesnt neccesarily meant shit. What matters is the person BEHIND the degree. A degree is there to show emplyers that you MOST likely know wtf your talking about in a particular subject, and it shows that you are dedicated nad know how to follow through with your goals. there are plenty of people out there with degrees who are idoits that barely graduated with a 2.0 average. Monday, March 3, 2008 at 10:33 PM I'm studying history. Where should I go for grad school? That depends a lot on what you want to focus on and where you'd like to spend a few years. I don't know much about history programs, but if there are periods you're particularly interested in, I'm sure there are schools that focus on them. Barring something like that though, I'd honestly just look more at the location of schools that are good enough and figure out which ones really pique your interest. For example, if you wanted to travel around Europe, someplace centrally located there might be a good idea (issues with being able to see Lexi aside). I went to Hawaii for my masters - not so much because the program was great (though it was better than average in the subject), but mostly because it gave me the opportunity to spend a bit of time there (and to go on trips to Japan and Korea as well as the adjacent islands). Having a degree from UH hasn't hurt me (though I'm not aiming to be faculty at an ivy league school, so do factor that stuff in). —anobody |

I'll put my two cents in and say take some time between your undergrad and graduate degrees. I go to school with so many 24-25 year olds who are miserable mostly because they didn't have the life experience to chose the right school. I know about three people who went to law school for three years before deciding they didn't want to be lawyers. Now they have a mountain of law school debt and don't know what to do next. You should do advanced education if it's something that interests you and you value learning for its own sake. I think the professional degrees give you some better opportunities. The people who respond to my resume these days are a lot different than they used to be. I've gotten calls back from places like presidential and congressional commissions which is something that wouldn't have happened until I did this. Like undergrad, just going through the experience changes you as a person. I suspect you've been in academia too long to see the difference between yourself and the worker bees out there, but get a job off campus and you'll see. —bguirk |
