Assuming the ISP is able to match it you then have to either send a settlement offer, or seize equipment related to that address and find the material on a storage device. 4. From here you have to prosecutre. Step one can be done w/ software. Steps 2-4 require some serious $ because they involve lawyers and law enforcement, court dates ect. The music copyright holding conglomerates do this at a loss to spread the message. The rest of law enforcement rarely get involved unless something has happened. People don't lose property without settlement or conviction. —bguirk |

Monday, February 18, 2008 at 11:35 PM Whatever happened with that? I seriously hate talking about this, but anything for you guys. Annotated version. Bitch illegally searched my comp with no permission, he was in my room cause my parents called the cops and he felt like searching my room. Somehow clicked on the one file on my computer that I probably shouldn't have had, but honestly we all know I don't do that and don't even know how, and don't need to, I just was careless with keeping my comp clean, so there it stayed in my downloads folder. So they took the whole desktop, and said they needed to research whether or not I had used them or not. Since I had not, I was apathetic, and figured "eh, they'll figure out I'm innocent and I'll be back to posting on TLC in a week". Wrong, after about a MONTH, they finally determined I was innocent. Then I called them back a couple days later to retrieve my computer and they're like "um, since you had illegal files on your computer, we're entitled to return it, SORRY". Isn't that utter bullshit? I paid for that computer myself, I built it myself, I bought it when I was 14 [had to save up for an entire year], it had so many personal priceless things on there that I needed, and would do anything to retreive. Seriously I would pay 500 dollars cash right now if I could buy JUST the Hard Drive... I'm assuming they sold it at a police auction. Anyone have any advice? So Anfernee, did you know what was in the file or not? Was the first time you found out what it really was was when the cops opened the file? It doesn't make sense if that's what happened because the first thing most people do after they download files is open them. Anfernee, I want to know what this argument with your parents was about and why they got so mad that they called the cops. Cops are lazy and they generally don't have anything to do, so they will basically be anyone's bitch. That's why they do these "scared straight" housecalls. They like feeling important and like they're in charge of people and they like feeling like people are scared of them. Here's my message to the cops, I pay your salary in the form of the taxes I pay, so therefore YOU WORK FOR ME! And I want you all to do your fucking jobs, go bust some drug houses or arrest some child abusers, don't give me chicken shit $50 parking tickets or come to my parents house and ask if I knocked over a street sign when I don't even know where the street you're talking about IS, and my car has no damage! When you are under investigation by the police they are allowed to use deception to gain evidence which is what he did (even though he didn't need to). You were a suspect in that situation. They are not there to help you. They are NOT your friends. You might not like how they operate, but that's how it works. Also--cops do not determine your guilt or innocence in cases like what you're describing. They didn't find you innocent. They didn't find evidence to charge you with a crime linked to the illegal material on your computer and weren't interested in prosecuting you for the many smaller crimes related to what was there. The cop might be a a dick for lying to you, but he just wanted to avoid a scene when he carried away your box for good. As far as things go you were pretty lucky. In a perfect world they would've erased the file and given you your box back, but on the spectrum of the really shitty things that could've happened in that situation losing the computer is probably the second best outcome. —bguirk |

Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 7:12 PM People eventually stop whatever they're doing that you don't like, the cops just make them stop faster. I just wait things out, it doesn't bother me that much If they are murdering your family, I guess eventually they will run out of family or knives/bullets/bludgeons. —derekho |

Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 8:52 PM It took me 8 months to get my ipod going. it holds 1 gb, which is too small. Portable music players suck. Someone needs to bridge the aesthetic and user interface gap between them and hi-fi. For instance, I would like a music player that is as small as my ipod (it's one of those ones that is the size of a matchbox) that doesn't require me to have a desktop computer anchor at home. Or notebook, or whatever. And the fact that it doesn't have gapless playback drives me insane. How the fuck can you listen to Devin Townsend with such sloppy equipment? NO nno no! —MajandraFan |

Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 9:42 PM I think you can turn gapless playback on if I'm not mistaken. Yes? I know iTunes has it, so why wouldn't iPod? —anfernee |

Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 9:59 PM there's either a setting for it on the ipod, or just select which songs/albums should have gapless playback in itunes. it's a check box somewhere. these settings should transfer to the pod. —TortillaFactory |

Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 10:02 PM Edited Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 10:13 PM well, there's naught mention of it in the instruction booklet, online help, or in the options within itunes when the little bugger is plugged in. edit: and it doesn't gapless playback on my sisters old 20 gb either. everything on the computer plays gaplessly (years after itunes came out). edit 2: just checked on wikipedia, to make sure i wasn't being ditzy. i have a 2nd generation shuffle, turns out, and they don't support gapless. neither does my sister's 20 that she got in early 2005 (my brother bought it in the states just before he came back, so it was probably a 2004 model). edit 3: i also want to point out that when that fucking sleaze steve jobs or whatever his name is announced that itunes and new ipods would have gapless playback (which of course received applause) he didn't bother mentioning that it wasn't an issue that was in any way mentioned on the apple website or the "independent" sites like wikipedia. Only a few tiny blog type sites mentioned this crucial issue at all. How hypocritical, annoucing they've finally fixed a problem they'd been denying the existence of. cocksucking priests. —MajandraFan |

Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 9:03 PM I love apple, but that protection plan is a waste of money. you dont need it and you will probably never use it. Id go to the apple store tommorow and try to see if I can get my money back. I know this because Im friebnds with a few people who work at Apple that told me that the protection plan is useless, and to not waste my money. —whoisnumbaone |

Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 9:22 PM It's much better than a standard store warranty, which is funneled through some warehouse you've never heard of. Apple services and returns within two to three business days, instead of the month and a half it took for Fred Meyer's warranty people to return my ipo. —TortillaFactory |
