Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 3:24 PM -How did you get on the radio? ...i took the aceman's advice - i just went to the station. i was a religious loveline listener all thru high school (1997-2001) and knew (by maybe junior year) that i wanted to do radio. so when i moved to santa barbara in august 2001, my third day in town i just drove to KJEE (the modern rock station where i found loveline on the dial), walked in, and asked the person at the reception desk if i could intern. then i traded a few calls with the morning show hosts (spencer & hoke), and a couple weeks later, i was dragging my ass out of bed at 5:30 everyday and working for free. taking out trash. brewing coffee. then i started to do some on-air bits with S & H as "intern scott," and after about 5 months, the station hired me. i started doing the board for loveline. in late 2003, they let me take over the sunday night show (8p-10p) called the "resurrection mix". from 2002-2005, i was working full time during the day and spending my nights at KJEE. i never thought of it as work though... it was my relaxation time. during those years, i developed a deep passion and appreciation for radio (as a genre) and for adam & drew. i miss those days terribly. i now live in san francisco and work at CBS radio. i do a craft-beer show on saturdays and am currently developing a sunday night show about current events. it wasn't too tough to get into radio here because i had years of radio experience (so there wasn't too much to learn) and eddie, KJEE's GM, knew a few people up here so he put a call in for me. its all about connects. -Do you have a mass communication degree? ...hell no. i only got thru 2 years of college. i was doing something i loved and i was never a great student, so at a certain point, i said F it. -Were you nervous when you first met Adam? ...surprisingly, no. i had butterflies when they were on their way and we were waiting for them, but once they got there, it was a relaxed atmosphere. acutally, their trip to SB was my idea (it was a shot in the dark by me - i just really wanted to meet them.) i suggested to the station GM that we bring A & D into town and have them do our morning show as in-studio guests. he loved the idea and made it happen. they got into town on friday night, and we put them up at the bacarra (a luxury beachside resort). saurday night, about 12 of us station staff took them (and lynette and susan) out to dinner at one of SB's best restraunts (the palace. cajun food. oh. my. god. AMAZING.) then on monday, they did the morning show. i still have the tape. they were going to do loveline out of our studio on monday night, but adam had to be in LA for something and that didn't happen. i was upset... can you imagine?? me doing to board with them sitting right next to me?? oh well, it was still a weekend i will never forget. that picture on my profile is from the KJEE studio during a commercial break. i took that photo (a 9x12 version of it) to the launch party for the adam carolla show in january 2006. adam signed it personally (scott- thanks! adam carolla) and then , a year later, i sent it to producer ann and she had drew sign it (stay well scott- dr. drew) and sent it back to me. it now resides in a frame in my room. it is one of my most valued (and totally irreplaceable) posessions. -what advice can you give for others who plan on becoming radio personalities? my advice is: follow adam's advice. pick a station you want to work at and just GO there and walk in. bring a resume and be charismatic. be prepared to work for free. be persistent. - can you hook me up with a radio job? ...where do you live? i don't really have any "pull", y'know, but if you live in SF i may be able to help. —airking32 |

Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 3:53 PM When I interned at my local urban station it was a lot of fun, I did production stuff, transferring reels onto the computer, put contest entries into the computer database, went out on remotes and stuff. Basically me and the production guy would do like 4 hours of work all day, and the rest of the time we would just sit around and read the alternative newspaper and talk. They also had a religious station there but we generally didn't do as many spots for them, they mostly just played music or had religious people come in and do call in shows. But once we had to do a spot with a visiting "prophet" from Atlanta who couldn't read. He came with the reverend from the church he was going to be speaking in. We didn't know he couldn't read because the reverend was reading the sheet for the spot. We found out when the production guy wrote some notes on the sheet and tried to have the "prophet" (who was around 65 years old, he looked like Famous Amos) read them, something like "I'm going to be speaking at the church of god this Saturday, it's at _____ street!" So he stumbled through it and just said "church of god" and fumbled on the address, after they left I was like "your writing must be horrible!" and he's like "No, the guy couldn't read!" I thought he was joking, I had never met someone who couldn't read before. I felt really bad for the guy, but I understood why he became a "prophet", since he couldn't really do anything else growing up if he couldn't read. It was a really sad thing to see. —John Lennon |

Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 5:22 PM I live in Modesto (central valley) it's a 2 hr drive from SF. There's a couple stations I would love to work at, but I just don't have the motivation to go down there. I've had some pretty bad job experiences in the past, which led me to just do school full-time. Sooner or later I'm gonna have to face reality and throw myself in the competitive workforce. I'm currently in school studying communication-public relations. I have no clue where that degree will take me. —adams_babymomma |

Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 5:23 PM College radio is not cool, nobody listens to it. It's only good if you like hearing the sound of your own voice, because you're usually the only person who is going to be listening when you're on the air. —John Lennon |

Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 7:08 PM "and you also can't play any hits because most college radios are a non-profit organization" What are you talking about ABM? The station I'm on plays Feist, Fall Out Boy, John Mayer, Death Cab, etc. and we're a non-profit station. On my show I play The Bosstones, Screeching Weasels, Gang of Four, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, The Jesus & Mary Chain, stuff like that. —John Lennon |

Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 7:18 PM Edited Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 7:21 PM I record it off the radio onto my computer. I then send the mp3 to my friends on a mailing list. I will send you the latest mp3 if you want. We used to stream online but then they pussied out about that last year and said they'd have to pay streaming fees to the RIAA, so they won't be streaming anymore. News flash: You don't advertise the station, almost nobody knows about it, we have a limited (5 mile) broadcast range, the Internet is your best bet for getting the word out about the station, and you could AT LEAST stream the talk shows we have, but no, that would actually require you do some work and set up online streaming, which is SOOOO difficult! You had it before, all you have to do is hook it up again into the studio! —John Lennon |
