Friday, February 8, 2008 at 1:12 AM Am I the only person that doesn't need to comb every inch of the earth before I die? I don't need to see everything. I just don't! So, I'm on a dating website trying to you know...find someone special. And almost every fucking guy I click on is talking about how much he loves travelling. Almost every guy I click on has this giant hard-on for travelling. They post all these pictures of their travels and talk about all the places they've gone. I can respect someone that loves to travel. It's just really not my thing. But it seems like 90% of the guys that I click on have travelled half the world and plan on travelling the other half before they die. Do you think they're all being honest? Is that just something that looks really good on a profile? Like putting down that you excercise 5 times a week even though you don't excercise at all? I am perfectly happy taking ONE vacation a year. About 5 to 7 days. I don't want to go backpacking every other fucking weekend. I don't want to camp in a tent. Why would I want to do that? Am I the only one that doesn't need to travel as much as possible? I think travelling is just a little overrated. —acm323 |

Friday, February 8, 2008 at 5:10 AM When I was younger I had a hard-on for traveling (and just about everything). I don't feel the need so much anymore--especially for "hard" travel in places where no one speaks English and I'm doing time in hostels/whatever. I'm sure I'll catch the bug again, but for now I'm satisfied by what I've seen. I've lived with some gray winters lately and I do like to take breaks from that--Hawaii, Key West, Puerto Rico--wherever the airfare is cheapest in February (not this year) usually dictates what sunny place I go to. —bguirk |

Then there are those who allow one extended vacation define them and turn them into condescending losers. Friday, February 8, 2008 at 10:42 AM I think Beat It! is dead on - it's just one of those things people say they like because they think that reflects well on them - like Radiohead. Having lived in Hawaii for awhile, my experience has been that there's nothing particularly special about most places. You can enjoy yourself almost anywhere, or you can have a crappy time on a beautiful island (you wouldn't believe how many people from there get island fever and want to get the fuck out... which is funny when you consider that the area that most people on the mainland spend 99.99% of their time in is smaller than O'ahu, though I guess it's just the idea that you could drive away if you really wanted to). Anyway, the nice thing about dating or just hanging out with people is that there are so many people in the world that you can eliminate 99.99% of them and still have hundreds of thousands of people to chose from (though I know it doesn't generally feel that way).

However there are some places I hate going to like the bay area. Everytime I go there, I always get confused because of all the freeway changes. There's 250 west, 580 south (?) 680, 101, just to drive 1hr and 45 minutes to another city. Driving to LA is much easier and fun, it only involves one freeway. —adams_babymomma |
