when you die you go to the gates of heaven where St. Peter will greet you (thats if your god enough to avoid a vacuum called purgatory). He pulls out the book of life and reads off all your sins. "When you were 11 you masturbated for the first time. You continued to do this about 6 times a day until you were 57 years old. Thats about 772,000 masturbations. Thats alot of sins dude. BUT DONT WORRY, those are small sins. Ok next we have good deeds. When you were 45 you gave $50 to the red cross, and a bunch of other stuff. Ok, soooooo, in the end it looks like you have 999,999 sins and 1,000,000 good deeds, CONGRATS! you made it brother! Welcome to heaven... OH CRAP! wait! When you were 26 you were drunk and you had anal sex with an unclean woman while eating bacon and taking the lords name in vein. Oh geez, anal sex is a mortal sin! Sorry dude, you shouldn't of been drunk. Oh well, see you in HELL BUDDY! My reason for not believing this: just read above and you will see how preposterous it sounds
Christian Doctrine: In heaven, everyone is the perfect age of 30 and anything you want magically appears. 5 story house, poof! 8 Ferraris, poof! 300yd magical garden, poof! Wanna play world of warcraft for all eternity? POOF! Just make sure you imagine yourself a good internet connection.
My reason for not believing this: I think that if you could imagine whatever you wanted and it would magically appear, then it would probably get really old and stupid after about a year or so. If there is life after death (which i honestly do believe that our conscienceness continues in some form incomprehensible to the human mind), then it would be totally stupid and pointless to go somewhere where i can just imagine worthless physical human shit for all eternity. GAY
Christian Doctrine: the all knowing all perfect God needs you to kneel before him every Sunday because he needs you to continuously prove your love and devotion to his all loving all knowing perfection.
My reason for thinking this is a load of crap: If God is all knowing, can the look into your heart and KNOW that your a loving follower of his word? If he was so perfect, then why is his ego/self esteem so screwed up that he NEEDS us to prove it every Sunday? The truth is, the Catholic church decided in the 1300's that we needed to prove our faith on a weekly basis so that they could SCARE US INTO BELIEVING THAT THERE IS A HELL, AND MAKE US GIVE THEM MONEY IN THE DONATION BASKET IN ORDER TO GO TO HEAVEN. Period.
I can go on and on all day.... If your looking for a "religion" or belief system that makes alot of sense, take a look at Taoism, although Taoism isnt really a religion. I guess thats what makes it great.

Whether it is personal confession in most protestant sects or confession to a priest, by "saying you are sorry" those sins get wiped away, therefore no matter how much you masturbate or have anal sex, you wont go to hell unless you aren't sorry. But at the same time, if you believe in the christian doctrine and aren't sorry for doing things that are not in accord with that doctrine, you know what the punishment is, and chances are you are a little psychologically off. If we are told from a young age that something is bad and believe profoundly that that is the case, and then don't feel sorry when we do it, there is something wrong. In regards to heaven being gay: find me a bible passage that says, "And Michael desired of a Ferrari, and of a Ferrari he wath given, and it was good."
Heaven appears more often described as a place of ultimate happiness/joy/love and in such a place I don't really think there would be people sitting on the sidelines saying, "But I don't want to be happy!" If you believe your conscious mind continues, I could argue that that would be equally boring. Perhaps even moreso. In terms of God being able to look into your heart and see you are a true believer: Have you ever heard of a little event in history called The Catholic Reformation? Well story goes some people like Jan Hus and Martin Luther were prettttty upset with the way the Catholic church was running things. They stressed personal faith and the ability of each person to have a personal relationship with god, without anyone else mediating. In the ensuing chaos countless people on both sides were killed in conflicts like the Thirty Years' War, or the infamous Spanish armada. Oh and have you heard of the Inquisition? Your arbitrary date of "the 1300s" baffles me. What happened in those years? In response to donation baskets: They are just that. Nobody forces you to donate to anyone. The various Churches are organizations with expenses. They have to maintain an infrastructure and properties and you as a worshipper are coming into their facilities to recieve a service for free, and they are hoping that you would give something back. I think maybe what you are thinking of were indulgences, which are a little spooky, but have been gone for hundreds of years. If you are so greedy that you can't donate to a church that you believe is your key to heaven, than you probably have some repenting to do. In terms of Taoism: It is a lovely little philosophy, but is better suited for Chinese farmers in the 10th century. Have you read the Tao Te Ching? Taoist and Confucianist elements in Chinese society were primary factors in preventing their civilization from advancing for thousands of years. The philosophies were so backwards looking that while they accomplished some spectacular things, they never advanced. They invented gunpowder, the compass, early printing, paper, advanced iron casting techniques, mechanical clocks, etc. and then left them to rot in the basement or used them for an immediate need while the Arabs used the compass to dominate trade on the seas, paper fuelled the literacy and education of the European and Islamic worlds, Gunpowder and iron casting revolutionized the military, and when we went back to China, years later, we dominated them, controlled their trade and stifled their culture. Harmony and peace and a close connection to the natural world are nice, but we do not live in a Utopian world, we must compete for survival, and while there are ethical and compassionate ways to do so, it doesn't come from burning books and pretending we live in the stone age. I respect their philosophy, it is just incredibly naive. Good thoughts though, numbaone. —derekho |
