Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at 6:25 PM somehow it doesn't bother me as much when Lena doesn't bother Googling for things as it does when Drake doesn't... guess I'm just more sexist than I want to admit to myself BTW Lena - sorry to disappoint but it seems that there's already a page on it (though this is slightly different from though still related to the economic concept that I suspect you're talking about) —anobody |

Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at 6:44 PM i went to a lecture by the guy who wrote the long tail book. —bguirk i saw his lecture in class the other day. what's the point of having that long tail model. Most retail stores that do not carry unpopular books, cds...etc have thier own site where they can make those products available. So even retail stores carry products in the long tail. —adams_babymomma |

Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at 7:10 PM Edited Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at 7:21 PM Speaking of which, I see that Knol isn't done yet. I was going to suggest that ABM make one rather than trying to learn how to use wikipedia. But it's still in "private beta" as far as I can tell. My guess is that Google is working very hard to get the social kinks worked out. Certainly comments are not peer-reviews, as suggested in the infamous screen shot. —ZT Spice |

Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at 7:17 PM Edited Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at 7:19 PM Most retail stores that do not carry unpopular books, cds...etc have thier own site where they can make those products available. So even retail stores carry products in the long tail. that wasn't exactly his point. it's more that the public's interest is becoming more diverse over time (this is where most of his sales data comes in) moving towards the proverbial long tail. there will be fewer "hits" or entertainment consumables that everyone owns of watches and more diversity. the internet allows retailers/service providers such as Amazon and Netflix to offer the entire long tail of products. business models based on a limited top ten or top twenty five products catering to the tastes of the entire general public will largely fail. this seems to be true in the music/book area, but it's interesting that a huge area of the entertainment industry (movies shown in theaters) doesn't conform to his theories and so he leaves them out of his lectures. kind of intellectually lazy, but the rest of his presentation is great. edit--PS netflix is currently sponsoring a 1 million dollar x-prize type contest for researchers to find a movie matching algorithm that will move its customer base into renting less from new releases and more from previously released inventory (the long tail). we attempted to come up with an entry in one of my classes. —bguirk |

anyways my group mates are stupid, instead of writing paragraphs about long tail, they each wrote thier own paragraph explaining what long tail is. They also wrote thier names after each paragraph...idiots. They don't understand how to collabrate. —adams_babymomma |

Saturday, January 12, 2008 at 3:14 PM then why did you refer to wikipedia if you knew there were other forms of wikis? Because a lot of people use "wiki" as a shorthand for Wikipedia (and that certainly made sense here from what you were asking). you didn't know that wikispaces.com existed, don't lie! Not that particular one, but I did know that many other wikis existed (though I never in a million years would have thought that you were talking about a specific one other than Wikipedia from your first post). —anobody |

Saturday, January 19, 2008 at 12:08 PM Edited Saturday, January 19, 2008 at 12:09 PM no silly, it's not a computer information science class. We don't learn about html, or how to design a website. It's a computer mediated communication class, and that's just a fancy word for human communication with the help of technology. We examine the utopian and dystopian views of technology and communication. Also social cues on the internet, a little bit of psychology (symbolic markers, and why people spend hours online talking to people they never met before), johari window, deindividuation, interpersonal dynamics, tech determinism, and how to distinguish credibilty online. I'm sure most colleges offer this class. —adams_babymomma |

Saturday, January 19, 2008 at 1:03 PM I'm sure they do. I'm also sure there's two kind of people who take them: the people who know it's bullshit and are looking for an easy class, and the people who take it seriously. The first kind is at least pragmatic in a sense, even if they're still wasting time/money on a course like that. Showing, once again, the neurosis of higher education. Misplaced importance is at the core of all neurotic behavior. —ZT Spice |
