I don't recall having this discussion before, but was everyone 18 when they had to leave the nest and got cut off financially from thier parents?

if so, where did you work/live/?

have you ever become so broke/homeless.

Do yout still maintian a positive, healthy relationship with your parents/siblings.

Just curious.

I feel like I'm being cheated by not making it on my own in the real world. How did I become 22 so fast?

one story, 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 950sq ft home in a small town located in a quasi decent neighborhood.
bought it in 1996 for $20K, sold it about four years later for $40K.

keep in mind the same house in your area would have gone for something like $60K and sold for $90K or more 12 years ago.

My mom wouldn't ever kick me out. She likes having me here. Our house is only 900 square feet. It cost $55k about 20 years ago.

In vaguely related news, my boyfriend has begun moving back into his parents' house. We're not even allowed to close his bedroom door. Whenever I say anything about it, he just suggests that I pay for an apartment for both of us to live in. I guess you could say they kicked him out at 22, because now that he's back, he has to pay them $250 rent.

Left home at 18 for school. Not counting the summer I came back for a few months at 19. Haven't been back since. Can't remember when the money was cut off, but it was a gradual process.

Midwest does still have cheap houses compared to the coasts. Upstate New York takes the cake. You can buy 3 houses in Buffalo for 20k. Pookie will tell us that the neighborhoods suck, but still. 3 houses! When I looked at school there I had visions of becoming a slum lord to pay my tuition.

Florida has surprisingly cheap houses, but I have a feeling your life expectancy goes down the minute you move there.

I was going to school, so I didn't get "kicked out" until I had to move into Seattle for the UW. I suggested moving out while I was still going to BCC, but my mom freaked out.

I suppose you could say I was "kicked out" when I moved across the country and basically told my parents to fuck off.

LMAO - I can't give you an exact number but lets just say "not cheap".

That said, if you can get together with a couple of roommates, you can still get a place.

Since you're not going to college, I'd say just figure out what you like (being realistic about it, of course), start heading in some direction and keep going.

Getting out on your own kinda sucks, but once you do it and start getting established, you'll probably never want to go back.

I can't tell if Sasafras is shitting us or not. Either way it's funny.

In vaguely related news, my boyfriend has begun moving back into his parents' house. We're not even allowed to close his bedroom door. Whenever I say anything about it, he just suggests that I pay for an apartment for both of us to live in.

I hesitate to mention this but at some point in the 90's I was the 22 year old guy still in school (but really thinking of quitting) with a job paying me $7.50 for 24 hours a week dating the freshly minted teacher who was about a million miles ahead of me in terms of getting her life together. For me she was great--she taught me to drive stick, I had health insurance thanks to her...she watched our dog when I took off for Europe for awhile. Looking back it's hard to see what she got out of the relationship other than my sparkling company and a lot of worry. I wasn't mean or anything and I always found a way to make money and make the rent, but that's probably three years of her life she'd like back. I probably also would've gotten more self sufficient a lot sooner had we not moved in together. I'm not saying dump your boyfriend, but maybe let him stew under his parents roof for awhile and don't give into the temptation of bailing him out. A couple of months with his folks will give him the kick in the ass he needs.

why don't you just go back to junior college? Just take classes that you like and try to get a 2 year degree. Trust me once you get a degree your parents will leave you alone. I had that similar problem, my parents forced me to take classes at the JC/CC including summer semesters.

Education is very important. My friend went to JC for one semester after high school, then she started working a round table and dropped out. If it wasn't for her parents and friends, her ass would be working at round table pizza for the rest of her life. Now she's finally back after 4 years, working on her respiratory therapist degree. I heard they make big bucks??

and don't move to socal yet, it's waaaaay to expensive.

Before you get the gig, just make sure it's one you can move forward in, unlike the gig I had where I was just general bitch. One time my manager made me sweep the parking lot because he knew the main boss was coming in for lunch, and that guy doesn't like the parking lot to be dirty.

Some people do it so they can GTFO of high school and move on to something else. A friend of my sister's did just that, finished her undergrad by 17, went to medical school and got her MD by 21.

Sounds great, but you're only young once and I think she probably missed out on both college and high school by being the wrong age at the wrong time.
