I remember when that guy called in and song the theme for Taboo II for Adam and I was wondering if anyone had the guitar tabs?

I asked this once.

Apparently everyone could write tabs for this, but no one will.

Also, fuck 311 for not covering it.

I'd love to get my hands on it as well. I could try to fumble my way through it but I'm far too lazy.

I thought that was more likely since they scored Adam a copy.

Tabs are weird and I don't get why people use them. If you're not going to read music (which is fine) just play by ear. Why bother to learn a retarded notation system when the other one is just as easy. The only advantage I ever saw to tabs was in the old internet because they were easier to represent as ASCII text than regular notation, but we've moved on since then.

(P.S. Please do write it out in normal notation, I could totally make use of that.)

i use tabs. any fool can figure them out in a matter of minutes.
this is why they are so popular.

never had any desire to learn to read music. that would require effort/work which would then suck all joy out of my hobby.

reading notes for the guitar is very difficult for those of us who never learned. i don't know if the classically trained lose sight of that, or what. tabs are much quicker and more intuitive, since you can't see all the notes laid out in front of you like on the piano. of course, even when i had the piano, i still couldn't read music. it's a learning style thing.

i learned the treble staff in kindergarten in a once a week music class--if 5 year olds can learn it I'm pretty sure anyone can. Tabs don't display rhythm and they hold you back as a musician because you aren't memorizing your notes which is a natural part of the learning process.

I know how to read sheet music like a pro for piano, from arpeggios to al dente, I know it all, but I still use tabs for guitar.

You'd get farther in guitar if you left the tabs behind and either just played by ear or used regular music.

I guess my bias against tabs is that they're oriented around the instrument, rather than just telling me the note itself. So if I, say, want to learn how to play awesome Tool songs where a MIDI or staff notation version doesn't seem to exist, I have to learn an entirely new notation that is meant to be played on the guitar, when all I want to do is just "translate" it into a piano version.

I think it's popular because alot of guitar players are usually not really into music or play several instruments (or as elitist, subsequently). I only play guitar, don't have plans to play any other instrument any more, and don't give a rats ass about really getting into music, so tabs are fine for me. But if I did play multiple instruments I would definitely use regular music notes.

(or as elitist, subsequently)

what's more elitist--spending literally one day to learn the system that every other instrument uses or dogmatically sticking to a notation only appropriate for one instrument that does not even notate rhythm? I have not said learn the staff or don't play, just don't bother with tabs one way or another--either learn to read or develop an ear (or both god forbid) but I'm just so sick of the cliche of the no rhythm having always staring at the their fingers while they play guitar players even though they've been playing for 10 years. It's like hunting and pecking instead of learning to type or having mommy tie your shoes when your 20.

My elitist note was not about tabs vs music, but rather about people that have studied music theory in general, that think they can categorically determine what's good and what's not. I should have clarified.

As for it being easier to learn, I would say that it is not for everyone. I played saxophone and never got the hang of reading music for some reason. I might just be a retard though.
