SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR COUNTERFEIT GAS CARDS -- AGAIN
MODESTO, CA - Detectives with the department’s Economic Crimes Unit arrested two men today after they found them using video and computer equipment to make counterfeit gas cards. One of the suspects was arrested in April of 2007 for the same offense by the same detectives.
Detectives were alerted to the possible scam through several sources. City of Modesto personnel who manage the city’s vehicle fleet began seeing unusual gas charges through the city’s Boyett Petroleum account. Boyett managers also contacted detectives with information about a suspicious vehicle that was observed at one of their stations. Employees from Don’s Mobil Glass in Modesto had observed the suspicious vehicle and taken a photo of it. They gave the photo to Boyett who in turn notified detectives.
both were booked on felony charges of conspiracy, grand theft, and forging access cards. Detectives are still working to determine how much gasoline the two suspects have stolen using this method but estimates are in the thousands of dollars.
