I put together a radio stream a couple weeks ago in my free time. It's now ready for people to enjoy!
Go to http://www.crossfade.co.nr

I would really appreciate your time and also your comments. If it helps listener ship I will run old Loveline shows during the week at night. I was going to wait until August but it doesn't really matter. Tell me your thoughts.

Thanks.

You won't keep me coming back by playing 311. Make with the loveline and run it at 10 PM pacific.

I keep a big rotation, even though you may hate 311 one of your favorite artists might be queued up soon after.
As for Loveline I can get it running for tomorrow night. I was thinking 11 or 12 pacific? Or maybe do keep it a 10pm. Kind of mimic how it would of normally been broadcasted. Talk about true nostalgia.

yeah, keep the teenage stoner music to a minimum, pls.
black sabbath is ok, though. ; )

your stream has a bunch of weird noises going on.. bleeps, pops. isn't that a compression issue?

i heard... ratm - the renegades of funk, 'pumpkins - tonight and cypress hill - (cover) paul revere before i turned it off.

i would have rather heard... ratm - ghost of tom joad, sp - zero and the beastie boys version of paul revere.

if you want to do something cool, play the songs by good bands that aren't completely fucked out. b-sides, we used to call 'em.

Plurry, I am not sure of these noises you are talking about? If you are describing the pumping sound of a compressor that can't be true. Yes, the audio is processed before hitting any encoder but its not smashed like many commercial stations do.
These beeps and such any specific times they were heard? Near end or beginning of songs? Are you listening with headphones?
I monitor the output often to make sure these things do not exist. I am aware that if dead air occurs the agc with slowly raise hiss and hum noise. It is not a noticeable issue unless you are specifically looking for it, but I am taking steps to solve it. Basically it's the shitty sound interface on the encoding machine coupled with unbalanced cables from the board.

Ok I am really getting lots of different responses from different people about the songs that get played. So far its like this:

311, Cypress Hill, Sublime, Beastie Boys etc: Less or don't play period
Bands like Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains: Keep playing

I try to keep a happy rotation for everyone but I'm just going to lower the weights on the "teenage stoner bands". And weed out any b-side shit that is getting played in place of original versions. Also you wanted to hear a certain song by Smashing Pumpkins, well it will eventually get played. Personally what I liked about how I set things up was I played "more" of the artist and less of the billboard charts.
Thank you.

those pops i was describing are like poorly ripped .mp3's.

i'm on a computer with shitty onboard audio. i guess that could be the culprit, but seems unlikely.

chix0r gets it, what i was suggesting earlier is that you play songs that weren't hits, but could have been. i'll give specific examples...

instead of "smells like teen spirit", play "scentless apprentice"

instead of "man in the box", play "a little bitter"

instead of "plush", play "naked sunday"

instead of "head like a hole", play "the big come down"

instead of "sober", play "pushit"

etc...

see where i am going with this?

Ok I get what your saying.
I already took the weight out of the stoner bands so it will take a couple hours for those rules to be put into affect. I can't please everyone but I try to be than the typical commercial station.

The sound problems must be on your end, no one has complained. Every single song has been ripped from cd @ 320kbps, but each track has been checked for drop outs and then disabled if true.

That IS my favorite artist. It's impossible to please everyone, so I would advise keep playing the singles not too many lesser known songs as plurry suggests, because it won't please everyone. Nothing against plurry, I'd be for it too, but it's just the fact that most people want to hear the songs they know. I actually really like your mix, Tool, 311, Shiny Toy Guns, Modest Mouse, Deftones, Rage...those are some of my favorite bands. I think it's pretty good mix, I'll probably start listening in the next few days when I'm on a faster computer, also the Loveline at 11, that's a great idea!

good job!

but wouldn't you agree that it would be refreshing to hear a really good 311 song like, "what i was thinking" that received no attention, rather than "amber" or "come original" for the 4 millionth time?

plurry

anfernee

+

Sunday, June 17, 2007 at 3:35 PM

yeah definitely. I didn't really iterate this, but I do agree with your point, I would rather hear all those songs that you mentioned, especially pushit, that song rocks. What I'm saying is, I would think he would have more listeners with the first group of songs [Plush, Man In the Box...].

But who knows, maybe you have a point there plurry, maybe there's enough of an audience out there looking for a change in radio like you and me?

You're right it is practically impossible to please everyone. So lets try to compromise here. The trend I am seeing here is that you don't want to hear just the singles. I try to do my best to include the singles and then some more for each artist. Keep in mind I actually use a professional automation system not some cheesy play lister. So as I keep getting more input, I can keep changing up the rules and such.

For example the artist 311 has 9 tracks that are in a daily rotation category that I created. These tracks are: All Mixed Up, Amber, Beautiful Disaster, Creatures (For a While), Don't Tread on Me, Down, I'll Be Here Awhile, Love Song, and Sweet.
They will get worked into the play list no more than one time per 95 minutes. This goes for any artist. You should only hear it once per 95 minutes. Each

The typical daily rotation category contains the usual singles from an artist and then some other non billboard tracks. So I think it really is just a matter of time before you hear what you want. all tracks in this category has the same weight, that is they are all equal in the amount of times they get worked into the master play list. This can be adjusted per track. For instance no one wanted to hear a lot of Sublime or Cypress Hill so its weight got lowered. It will still get played but much less per 24 hour period.
All other tracks not put into daily rotation is put into secondary rotation. Once per hour the system selects one of these tracks.
That a very basic description of the rules. Other things like tempo or year has influence on the rotation rules. The important thing is your comments. I hear what you are saying and making improvements based on the majority ruling. Plus at least 10 new albums get ingested weekly so the variety is getting bigger real fast.

That sounds genuinely cool, I already tried on this computer but it doesn't work, I'll try it on my new laptop once I get it all set up and everything.

How do you tell what people dislike? Cypress Hill is annoying, but who doesn't like Sublime?

I had it described to me as teenage stoner music. I dunno it's hot and cold with people, no tolerance at all. Anyways if this starts working good I will ahead a buy a 25 slot server see how it grows.
Right now my provider is free, just because the stream page is filled with there advertisements. Which sucks because this also prevents people for direct linking the stream address. There is some firewall that checks that you entered through there page first. Sometimes they decide to shut me off and I have to log into my control panel and turn things back on which gets extremely annoying.

The good news is we have Loveline tonight at 11pm pacific or 2am eastern. Even threw together a lil promo track thing.

311 is the worst. How could people be that devoid of musical taste that they keep listening to their 311 CDs over and over again? What's worse is if they rotate 311 with Sublime. I refuse to go into people's cars if they have either CD with them. I'd rather walk home and get kidnapped and brutally raped rather than listen to 311 in someone's car.

Anfernee, I have faith in you, in a couple of years you will realize how foolish you were deifying bands like 311. I mean, who knows, maybe Mountain Dew will start tasting disgusting soon too.
