I'm visiting Southern CA next week. The main highlight of the trip will be going to Warped Tour for the 1st time...Any tips on like what goes down, or things to look out for, stuff to see...etc..?
I never buy the merch and you only need one water bottle; you might even be able to bring your own, and then you can refill it. You might wind up paying $5 for a basket of chicken strips or something, but I never want to eat a lot in that heat, anyway. And I really like the food at my amphitheatre, so I don't mind paying for it once a year.
Go to McDonald's and load up on food, so you won't be hungry and have to get ripped off. Also grab a 44 oz powerade or lemonade or water, and chug it, because if it's anything like Fresno's weather, it's gonna be hot, and you're gonna be thirsty. Bring one of those camel packs if you have one. Definitely wear shoes that you don't mind getting dirty, cuz flip flops won't cut it in the concert crowds. Plan out a schedule of who you want to see at what time to be sure you won't miss anyone, arrive 15 minutes early if it's a band you really want to see so you'll have a good spot without having to shove past people or bust out a taser, Wayne's World style.
And just chill out and have fun, cuz it's super cool to have all those bands in one spot, and the line up is way better than it was last year [especially since NOFX ditched Fresno, those bitches, I still like their music but I have no respect for them]

Have you actually been to a Warped Tour, Beat It? — chix0r
Indeed I have (though the advice above goes for any day-long festival/concert of this sort). I went in 2003 or 2004 and had a great time. I like live music so I'll go to any concert no matter what kind of music is being played. The sideshows were cool too, especially the kids (they couldn't have been older than sixteen) riding motorbikes in a cage.
A friend of mine had a connection with one of the bands (Andrew W.K. I think it was since he's from around here) and were able to get backstage and watch a lot of the performances and was able to get supplies off the busses. But before we located them, I think I bought a $7 beer and a $5 bottle of water.
If I remember correctly, a few of the bands were Andrew W.K., Dropkick Murphy's, AFI, Yellowcard. edit: Fuck, and I totally forgot Rancid, they were the band I was really excited to see.
Wow, I just went to the official site, you weren't lying,
08/14 Verizon Wireless Amphitheater St. Louis, MO
Pennywise Jun 29 - Jul 25, Aug 17 - 25
That's terrible, maybe they hate St. Louis? That especially sucks cuz Pennywise is like the poster band for warped tour, they've played on more Warped Tours than probably anybody, so you'd figure one of those years they'd hit your town. I'm a huge PW fan to and I am really excited to see them. Here's the list of bands I want to see:
Alkaline Trio Jul 28, 29, 31 - Aug 7 As I Lay Dying Aug 4 - Aug 25 Bad Religion Entire Tour Bayside Entire Tour Buck O Nine Jun 28 - Jul 1, Aug 23 - Aug 25 Coheed And Cambria Entire Tour Fishbone Aug 23 - Aug 25 Flogging Molly Aug 7 - Aug 25 Funeral For A Friend Jun 28 - Aug 3 Haste The Day Jun 28 - Jul 27 Hawthorne Heights Jul 18 - Aug 25 Killswitch Engage Entire Tour K-os Entire Tour Mayday Parade Jul 18 - Aug 3 New Found Glory Entire Tour Norma Jean Jul 18 - 22 Paramore Entire Tour Pennywise Jun 28 - Jul 25, Aug 17 - 25 Pepper Entire Tour Red Jumpsuit Apparatus Entire Tour Scary Kids Scaring Kids Jun 28 - Jul 27 The Starting Line Jul 3 - Aug 25 Street Drum Corps Entire Tour Sum 41 Aug 14 - 15, Aug 23 - 25 Underoath Jul 23 - Aug 9 The Used Jun 29 - Jul 3, Jul 7 - Jul 15
Of course, this doesn't apply if you're seeing a band that no one cares about. Like the time there were only 10 people watching The Unseen.
lmao, I know EXACTLY what you're talking about, I saw Zebrahead last year, literally 20 people there, they were the last band to play and playing opposite Less Than Jake, it was really sad. I love Zebrahead and they put on a great show, but it was cool for me cuz the bassist gave me a setlist, pick, and a full 24oz. can of their Tour Water [which I kept unopened even though I was dying of thirst].

Why don't you want to see Flogging Molly? They're awesome. August 14th just so happens to be my second day of student teaching, but I'm going to cut out early and go to Warped Tour anyway. I've had tickets for like 4 months already.

I do want to see them, my Irish friend showed me them a couple years ago, and they seem pretty tight, although I get them confused with Dropkick Murphies. See that's a list of all the bands I want to see, the bolded ones are just the bands I REALLY want to see. That's not a complete list, here's the total list:

Some really smart guy had some great comments in that thread despite the spelling errors:
Give yourself 5 or 6 years and see if you still like seeing 41 minutes sets with bands that have had no sound checks/sleep and are barely making any money and music is bleeding over from other stages to form a yucky sonic stew. It's always too fucking hot at those summer fest shows and some fat sweaty guy always brushes up agsinst you. Water is a mere $5 a bottle. You couldn't pay me to go to one these days. I know--let's take the Lollapalooza idea which was already too crowded and double it! Fantastic. Maybe I'd slip in after 6:30 and catch the headliners, but I'd rather go down to SXSW if I wanted to catch that many bands in such a short preiod of time.
Me, just out of high school in 1978 - for the next two years I saw The English Beat, X, The Blasters, The Germs, The Go Go's, The Circle Jerks, Black Flag, TSOL, Fear, and The DK's, mostly at small L.A. clubs.
The first three were in separate free concerts at my school, UCLA. Whoever was booking the free student concerts definitely had their head out of their ass, and booked some kickass shit.
Oh and Sassafras Roots, as for what to look for: TAIL, lots. Smokin' hot ass.
I'm seeing the deftones at a smallish club at the end of the month in fresno, and I also have a ticket to Powerman 5000 [This is What it's Like When Worlds Collide] at a smalll ass club literally the size of my living room and family room put together. I saw FearBefore and Circle Takes the Square at the same club, 2nd best show of my life.

What error? He said "go for the tail" and I said "none of it punk." It works.
I've seen AFI, Trail of Dead, Celldweller, Ima Robot, Kill Hannah, The Sounds, The Living End, Enon, Head Automatica, Anti-Flag, The Unseen, Rancid, and Electric Six at small clubs. I still like Warped Tour.

From that list, I've seen Kill Hannah [terrible], and Anti-Flag at small clubs, and also: lostprophets, Avenged Sevenfold, cKy, Kottonmouth Kings, Fear Before, Circle Takes the Square, Fenix-TX, Flyleaf, Flight 409, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Haste the Day at small clubs. I still like Warped Tour.

off the top of my head...
i've seen the dead milkmen (met the band), dinosaur jr., the melvins (met the band), marilyn manson, the meat puppets, faith no more (met mike patton), moby (met him), mr. bungle and skinny puppy at small venues.
you stand a better chance of meeting the band and crew at smaller venues.
i've seen prince, kiss, megadeth (met the band), nine inch nails, korn, van halen, the jacksons (reunion tour 1983), and the cure at large venues.
Not exactly related to the thread, but since Chix0r brought up Flogging Molley, I thought I'd take the opportunity to say that, if you like them, you might want to check out The Liars Handshake.
I had them in-studio a couple months back and they're awesome live (not too shabby recorded either).
Why would you write your band's name incorrectly on the MySpace on purpose?
Because they didn't?
By "on purpose", I mean that I assumed that's how they wanted their band name to be spelled.
Maybe they thought it looked cool that way? Maybe they wanted people to be confused or annoyed by it and debate whether they meant "The Liars' Handshake", or "The Liar's Handshake"? Maybe they wanted to annoy pedants?
Of course, nobody except for K-os has ever done something crazy like that.
I would say a good 4/5ths of Warped Tour is merch tents..and other events besides music..and stuff that I don't remember because it's always too hot to care about. But a lot of bands do "meet & greets" at their tents, so that's cool I guess.
True dat^, I've been agreeing with chix0r so much lately, but yeah last year I got to meet Gym Class Heroes at their tent, they were super cool, and this was prior to Cupid's Chokehold, so they weren't that popular.
Ech. I hate the idea of meeting a band. But I've seen more band members walking about at Warped Tour than any other venue I've been to.
Same here, why all this hate for the WT?
Sassafras Roots, you'll love it, if you don't, you're a whiny bitch, but I doubt you won't have fun.
Hawthorne Heights is gonna be there?? I'm going to the 1st show of the tour in Pomona, and I didn't see them on the roster of bands....Unless there was a mistake....
They won't be at Pomona, but they will be at Fresno, which is where I'm going. Look at the complete list higher up in this thread that I posted earlier it says the dates each band will be playing.
i found what ya'll are looking for, but it would be hypocritical of me to post it after making such a big deal about letting things die and not giving quasi nutty chicks a hard time for being themselves.

>>It's all about Bad Religion
Have you seen them live before? They play Warped all the time so I'm presuming you have. They're my all-time favorite band, but I've never been terribly impressed by the live performance. And their new music is getting worse, so that won't help.
Also, isn't Hawthorne Heights quite possibly the most emo band in the history of the planet? Didn't they write that "cut my wrists and black my eyes" business?
Friday, June 15, 2007 at 6:22 PM Edited Friday, June 15, 2007 at 6:25 PM
Actually, I haven't, this will be my 3rd Warped Tour [2005, 2006, 2007], cuz they took a break from 2002-2004 from Fresno, and I was only 12 in 2001, and Bad Religion didn't play the last couple years, so this will be my first time. I'm pretty excited though, even though u said they're not great. I'll tell you what I think after I see them. I'm not a huge fan, but I've liked them since they had that song in that one Tony Hawk game, "You". I hope they play "Los Angeles is Burning" that's my favorite song.
Yeah they did write that, but helll no they're not the most emo band, listen to Cute is What We Aim For or Silverstein or Aiden. Any one of those bands makes Hawthorne Heights look like Blink-182. That first song you're referring to "Ohio Is For Lovers" is pretty emo, but their latest songs are practically pop. I'll admit some of their lyrics are pretty emo, but if you listen to a song without paying much attention to the lyrics, their music is super catchy and gets stuck in your head forever. Saying Sorry is a great song. It might be too whiny for some people, but I like it. They incorporate screaming into their songs well, much like Killswitch Engage.
>>Any one of those bands makes Hawthorne Heights look like Blink-182
Blink-182 gets some emo cred from me for their later efforts, so you're not helping their case there. Half the time when I listen to Saying Sorry I think "hm, this isn't bad" and the other half I think "this is so horrible it could only be Hawthorne Heights."
I actually think some of MCR's songs are fine and I like Fall Out Boy, so I'm not really anti-emo. But I didn't peg you for one.
My point is, all these bands can be lumped into the all-encasing notorious, ambiguous "emo" group, but some of them are more rock [MCR, Fall Out Boy, and HH] and some are just plain whiny, slit yuor wrist and wear eyeshadow bands. The ones I mentioned are more mainstream now and more radio-ready.
On another note, I just bought the Warped Tour sampler from Wal Mart today, [great deal btw, 50 bands, 50 songs, 2 CD's for 5 bucks!] and discovered a great band, As I Lay Dying. I love this song on here, and just downloaded 3 more songs, these guys are legit. Very metal, I'm sure rANcId would like them.
I highly recommend this CD, especially if you're going, it gives you a chance to listen to bands you might not have heard, and has rare songs you've probably never heard from the bands you already have heard of. Plus it's only 5 bucks.
>>The ones I mentioned are more mainstream now and more radio-ready.
They must be ready but not yet radio-played, because while I've heard the names, I've never actually heard songs by any of them. Or maybe we just don't do real emo radio here..
Are you kidding me? You've never heard FOB, MCR or Hawthorne on the radio? Holy shit it seems that's all they play on our alternative station, that, and Nervana and Pearl Jam. I realized I spelled Nirvana wrong but I don't like them enough to change it.
No no, I mentioned FOB and MCR. You mentioned Cute is What We Aim For, Silverstein and Aiden. If your point was that your "mentioned" rock bands are more radio-ready than true emo, then I suppose you're correct.
Everyone knows that The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, and Echo & the Bunnymen could ALL kick Hawthorne Heights', Fall Out Boy, The Used, and My Chemical Romance's musical asses without even trying or reforming (in the case of The Smiths).
ok but they're all old. you have to start to moving on sometime, especially since we're talking about Warped Tour and you're not gonna see 70s 80s bands on Warped Tour.
Joan Jett is on Warped Tour? Well I want to go now! There's nothing better than a butch lesbian from Jersey who can rock out and breaks college Republicans' noses. Hey Anfernee how about trying to jump onstage and then she can break your nose!
other than bad religion--arguments about the bands you are going on about are like arguing which one of my morning turds is the brownest. They're all still shit.
I was gonna say that, but she was only on for one year, and wasn't very popular. 98% of the bands are new, except BR, Pennywise started early 90's I think.
Sunday, June 17, 2007 at 2:46 PM Edited Sunday, June 17, 2007 at 2:50 PM
Pennwyise started in '88, NOFX in '83, and The Vandals in 1980. Alkaline Trio, Flogging Molly, Tiger Army, and The Unseen are all a decade or more old. I wouldn't say "new" so much as "current."
Sunday, June 17, 2007 at 3:02 PM Edited Sunday, June 17, 2007 at 3:02 PM
Yeah, but if you take the time to figure out how many bands on the tour have been around for at least a decade (which I don't feel like doing), it would be even more than that, especially if you include other years.
