The Appalachian Mountains of the eastern U.S. were once continuous with those of Scotland and Scandinavia. - TRUE
The tops of the highest mountain belts, like the Himalayas, originated in the ocean and contain marine sediments and fossils- TRUE
The conecpt of Continental Drift was a hypothesis
The concept of Plate Tectonics should be considered a theory
Oxygen is the most abundant element in the earth’s crust
An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by ordinary chemical methods(1 kind of atom) - TRUE
A naturally occurring aggregate of minerals and other substances is a rock
Neutrons and Protons are particles that are found in an atomic nucleus

Diamond is the hardest known mineral
A positively charged ion is called a cation
A valence electron is found in the outermost orbital
Graphite (Hardness 1) and diamond (Hardness 10) are compose3d of the same element. - TRUE
Gold is a native element
The basic building block of silicate minerals which has 4 oxygen atoms joined around a smaller silicon atom in a four-sided pyramid is called an oxygen-silicon tetrahedron
Potassium is one of eight most common elements of the earth’s crust
The tendency of a mineral to break along very smooth flat planes is called cleavage
Bonding caused when atoms are linked together by transfer of electrons, causing an electrical imbalance is an ionic bond
Olivine is the mineral with the highest melting point
Olivine is the most dense
Olivine is the least stable when exposed to weathering forces at the surface of the Earth
Metamorphic rocks always next melt, making magma - FALSE
Magma that cools quickly tends to form only large crystals - FALSE
Lava is the term used for molten rock flowing on the surface of the earth
Quartz and muscovite are the last minerals to form (i.e., at the lowest temperatures) in Bowen’s reaction series
To best describe a discontinuous reaction series, you would say as the temperature drops, minerals already formed react with the melt to become new minerals
If a magma has a silica content of 60%, it will cool to become andesite
At divergent boundaries, Peridotite partially melts to become basalt
An andesitic magma chamber can separate into basaltic, andesitic, and rhyolitic layers by gravitational differentiation (crystal settling)
Granite can be formed from crystal settling, or crustal assimilation
Basalt is a volcanic igneous rock consisting mainly of mafic materials
Rhyolite and granite resemble each other because they have the same composition
What minerals are found in obsidian? - No minerals only glass
A piece of country rock that has been engulfed by magma is called xenolith
Sill is the term used for a tabular cordant pluton
Pillow lavas form where volcanoes erupt onto the seafloor
The fine-grained matrix of a porphyritic rock is called groundmass
Mauna Loa (Hawaii) is an example of a shield volcano
Large collapse depressions that form on some volcanoes are called calderas
A cloud with superheated steam and hot ash that sweeps rapidly along the ground is called nuee ardent
Rhyolite is a aphanites igneous rock
The most common mineral family in igneous rocks is feldspars
A steep-sided volcano composed of very viscous rhyolite lava is called a lava (plug) dome
A rock with large crystals (called phenocrysts) in a fine-grained matrix has the porphyritic texture
An intrusive (phaneritic) igneous rock made of olivine, augite(pyroxene), and calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar is gabbro
The Hawaiian islands are made of gently sloping volcanoes called shield volcanoes
Granite is an example of an intrusive (phaneritic) igneous rock
A glassy igneous rock composed of frothy gas bubbles is pummic
An aphanitic rock with the same minerals as diorite is andesite
A rock that is composed almost entirely of mafic minerals is basalt
The frost-wedge debris found at the foot of cliffs is called talus
Chemical weathering is most common in warm, wet climtes
Ice wedging is an agent of mechanical weathering
Pedocal is the most common soil in the western U.S.
Exfoliation refers to the tendency of rocks such as granite to crack into slabs due to pressure release
Quartz is a mineral that DOES NOT chemically weather into a clay mineral
Accumulations happen in the B-horizon of most soils
Coal can best be categorized as bioorganic
Salt flats on a dry lake is less likely to contain clastic sediment than others
Chalk is a type of limestone
Grain shape distinguishes conglomerate from breccia
Depth to bedrock is NOT a factor in formation of soils
Laterite soils are extremely fertile (forming in rainforests) - FALSE
Rock gypaum and rock salt belonging to this group of sedimentary rocks called chemical
When a magma intrudes into a host rock, the rock immediately adjacent to the margins of the intrusions is metamorphosed, thus forming a new rock. This process is called contact (thermal) metamorphism
Marble is the new rock formed when limestone metamorphoses
Greenstone is the metamorphic product of basalt

Did You Know...

If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.

(Hardly seems worth it.)

If you farted consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb.

(Now that's more like it!)

The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet.

(O.M.G.!)

A pig's orgasm lasts 30 minutes.

(In my next life, I want to be a pig.)

A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death.

(Creepy.)

(I'm still not over the pig.)

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour.

(Do not try this at home. Maybe at work.)

The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male's head off.

("Honey, I'm home. What the....?!")

The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It's like a human jumping the length of a football field.

(30 minutes... lucky pig. can you imagine??)

The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds.

(What could be so tasty on the bottom of a pond?)

Some lions mate over 50 times a day.

(I still want to be a pig in my next life...quality over quantity)

Butterflies taste with their feet.

(Something I always wanted to know.)

The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.

(Hmm........)

Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people.

(If you're ambidextrous, do you split the difference?)

Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump.

(ok, so that would probably be a good thing)

A cat's urine glows under a black light.

(I wonder who was paid to figure that out?)

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain.

(I know some people like that.)

Starfish have no brains.

(I know some people like that too.)

Polar bears are left-handed.

(If they switch, they'll live a lot longer.)

Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure.

(What about the pig?)

Not true. I've studied mantises at great length. Check the myspace page.
