Oh that's so sad (I had to stop watching after the first one).

Of course, I'm sure he asked lots of people lots of questions and edited together the most pathetic examples, but still. The old white guy scared me the most. Shouldn't he know about WW I / WW II and what Hiroshima / Nagasaki are? Wasn't he alive at the time?

CNNNN is funny most of the time but the back-of-your-head inklings about what those people are really like? They're dead on.
Kind of summed up by the chorus of Disposable Teens by Marilyn Manson:

You say you wanted evolution?
The ape was a great big hit
You say you want a revolution man
And I say that you're full of shit

Just like Jon Stewart, when push comes to shove the thing they care about most is their upper middle class lifestyles.
But don't we all.

I would put our dumb against your dumb in a general knowledge contest anyday - The simple fact is only 1 in 4 Americans even owns a passport that shows how insular you all are.
I'm not crowing, I think it is sad that the human race has developed to the extent that these dumb fucks can own cars and guns and have children to pass thier retard genes onto.
In a real developed society we would only allow people of a certain intelligence and financial level to have children - The world is too overcrowded for more dumb ass African dictators with more bullets than brain cells, Arabic princes with more money than brain cells and dumb fuck American presidents with more voters with less brain cells than the average slug voting in Amerrican presidents with less brain cells than the dumb asses voting for them.

I'll go with you there.

That's not even remotely fair and you know it.

We can drive from Glasgow to Istanbul and still be in the same country. How many would you have to pass through to do that? At least 7 by the best route I can find. Also, pre 'axis-of-evil' / 'terrorism' rhetoric, we could travel freely through any of our neighboring countries without a passport.

When you think about it - If anything, it's almost a testament to how cosmopolitan we actually are as a nation that that many of us have passports.

Seriously--how many Brits would leave the country if the cost was in the 280 pound sterling range instead of the 38 pound range? We don't even count it as another country when we go to Canada, but a ton of us near the border cross all the time and do so with a driver's license and a song (at least for another year or so). I'm not denying a huge proportion of us aren't insular, but they're mostly in the flyover states.

Fact--British population -- approx 61 million.
Fact--US Population -- 300 million plus.

1/4 of 300 million is 75 million. For a country so insular we have more passport holders than you have people. Not that it's a contest or anything but we win.

Yeah Ok maybe you win but how many of those people have American passports - I'm not sure if millions of illegals carrying obscure passports from shitty countries should count. (I better be careful here as we have been overrun by 600,000+ poles this year and are expecting at least that many romanians next year - In fact fuck it, the UK has become a fucked up mess of a country which has a worse leadership than even America and the ONLY thing we have going for us is the fact we still don't all walk around shooting each other (yet)

We have a huge immigrant population that doesn't raise up and riot like a bunch of other countries that try to do the same thing (I'm looking at you France). Right now and for the past 6 years the views/perceptions of our most fucked up citizens have had center stage. Hopefully that is changing.

Good Value + Great Service + Great Food = THE USA
And to be really honest you guys dont need passports - You have every type of weather, country type (sun, sand, snow, mountains, forests etc) and diversity in your country.
However retards are taking over the world - the Americans on those videos could easily be matched by the many British tards - Its all a downward spiral.

I pretty much agree (with you not your class). Unfortunate that that's something you have to keep to yourself.

I completely understand people being seriously traumatized by it if they saw it first hand, had relatives in the buildings, or if they were there themselves.

I know so many people here (in AZ) who act like someone broke into their house and raped them anally with a replica of Ron Jermey's penis. These people must have such fragile psyches that they'd be traumatized by a little kid screaming "boo" from across the street.

Again - if you were personally affected by it, or even know someone who was, things are a bit different. If you don't even know anyone who knows anyone who was there and you're seriously troubled by it, you should really seek psychiatric help (not just for your trauma).

Even then - it's been what? Five years already? Not to be harsh, but baring PTSD, that seems just slightly excessive for a grieving period.

What really pisses me off about the whole 9/11 thing is that people blow it so far out of proportion and then use it to achieve their own nefarious ends.

We've had a handful of terrorist attacks on US soil (or even against US targets, worldwide) over the past ~50 years. At least some of those were domestic - they certainly weren't all Islamic Jihadists. The number of deaths in all of those combined is something like (though slightly smaller than) the number of people killed every year in car crashes involving drunk drivers.

I understand it's harder to get a handle on that (or a thousand times that number just of kids dying worldwide every year from easily preventable causes like starvation).

It just drives me insane that you can count on as many drunk-driving deaths next year, and roughly zero caused by terrorists, but we're blowing billions and suspending Constitutionally protected rights just to fight a phantom enemy.

One final thing about that - I see these bumper stickers saying that "freedom isn't free". There's even a rather famous country song about it. The thing people seem to miss (and that I never hear brought up) is that perhaps part of the cost of freedom is an extremely small risk of a terrorist attack. It sucks, but personally I'm fine with that because the alternative is so abhorrent - having our liberties crushed and living in a police state - which, itself, wouldn't even work to prevent every possible terrorist attack.

ano now you must admit I win

I don't remember arguing with you. I think all that I said was that the passport thing was kinda a bogus argument.

I'd certainly never try to claim that there aren't a lot of borderline retarded ignorant Americans.

This reminds me of a story I like to tell about my sister. I'm sure I've told it before but anyway....

She took honors classes throughout school. Honors math, honors english, honors history, honors art, honors home-ec (well, she would have if there was such a thing).

Now, she's a sophomore in high school, and Schindler's List comes out. Somehow the topic comes up. Turns out that she hasn't the slightest clue what the Holocaust was. The movie (well... our discussion about it) is the first she's heard of it.

Do I need to repeat honors classes? How is that even possible?

Now, as an aside to my aside, I have to point out that I can't remember with confidence if we went over it in one of my history classes or not (though I vaguely think we did) but I still knew about it since I was in grade school - from watching history specials on PBS, and probably other sources.

The reason I bring that distraction up is that I know (and I'm sure we all do) people who crap on TV. "Oh, I never watch it", "I don't even have one in my house", "rots the brain", etc.

Taken to excess, obviously it's not a Good Thing™, but on many subjects, I've learned more from TV than from my classes in school.

Then again, I was a weird kid. When we got cable and the local university started broadcasting classes on one of the public access channels, I'd watch them whenever I could. Even if you don't go that far, Adam's beloved Hitler channel, some of the science channels, even PBS all have a ton of well produced, entertaining educational programming.

END TRANS.

USA has the largest peasant underclass of all industrial countries. This is caused by government policy with the purpose of feeding military.
British people don't want or need non-English films remade for them. That's a small and obvious example of how utterly oblivious the USA population is of the outside world. You don't hear anyone saying Planet UK. Planet USA is a slur of small renown. Still on the movie example, even middle class internet people will often be found declaring that they know about foreign movies but are fine with remakes, or quite happy to watch both, or prefer the remakes. Hence even the self aware are not self aware.
The driving? Goddamn, Australia is almost exactly as large as the USA yet with far fewer people. The nearest big city is Sydney. 3 to 4 hour drive away. The next nearest is Melbourne. That's 9 hours. Distance is no excuse!
Also, the various provinces of Europe that have the wealth to tout themselves as individual countries in no way constitute the international cosmopolitan currency that the true breadth of the earth supplies. How many people in Britain have more than a passing aquaintance with the world beyond Asia Minor? Barely more than Usans who know they are not Americans, or at least not The Americans. Yet barely more is still more for there are ranks and files to be filled. Filled with poor subservient desperate people. Intelligent enough to operate automatic weapons and heavy machinery but not much else. Heil hitler!

We weren't using distance as the exucse. Hell, I travel. Your argument of underclass fuels the other argument. You have to be of a certain means to travel and the perception of those means is even higher than the reality.

Nice with the stripping away of the per capita, bguirk. You a statistician?

Amature. The point wasn't to say how wordly we are, it was to illustrate something else. I'm well aware of the per capita thing--but we have a huge diverse population in the US and to paint us with such broad strokes (monolinguistic non-passport-holding barbarians) is misleading and something I have found in my travels that people from other nations love to do.

Yeah - the only reason I brought it up is that it half explains why so few Americans have passports - we can drive for days at a time without needing one, and we can (or at least could) enter and leave most adjacent countries without a passport (Canada, Mexico, most of the Caribbean).

The same is not even remotely true of Europe.

poetic license. i like how morrissey can make any song sound pretty.

America your head's too big, Because America, Your belly is too big. And I love you, I just wish you'd stay where you is

In America, The land of the free, they said, And of opportunity, In a just and a truthful way.
But where the president, is never black, female or gay, and until that day,
you've got nothing to say to me, to help me believe

In America, it brought you the hamburger. Well America you know where, you can
shove your hamburger. And don't you wonder, why in Estonia they say, Hey you, you big fat pig, you fat pig, you fat pig

Steely blue eyes with no love in them, scam the World,
And a humourless smile, with no warmth within, greets the world.
And I, I have got nothing, to offer you
No-no-no-no-no, just this heart deep and true, which you say you don't need

See with your eyes, touch with your hands, please, hear through your ears, know in your soul, please. For haven't you me with you now? and I love you, I love you, I love you. And I love you, I love you, I love you.

The british are dumb because the BELIEVED government's hollow promises of "safety and security" and gave up their PERSONAL means of self defense (i.e. firearms) to the point that they're not even allowed to own their own pistol in their own homes anymore.

Americans are probably a little stupider and more ignorant than even the brits though, because our government "schools" are PARTICULARLY horrible. This is because these government "schools":

1. are now run by the federal department of "education" through strings attached to federal funding
2. are run by the teacher's union's empire that only wants more money and less accountability for how that money is used
3. are, in the end GOVERNMENT indoctrination centers, which is why, as this has progressed, we have a majority of americans who are emotional NON thinkers, who are knee jerk GOVERNMENT LOYALISTS in stunning ways. Americans won't stand up to prosecutors or judges when they sit on juries, and they won't stand up to their power hungry state legislatures in most things, and they have CAVED into federal power grabs since 9/11.
