Beating on Good Times on TV Land

Last night I watched Good Times on TV Land with my 7 year old daugther. I used to watch this show at a kid many years ago. During this episode James Evans takes a belt (an object) to butt of a new (semi-enemy) friends of the youngest son. Now that I've listen to every LoveLine episode for the last few years I became Dr. Drew-like mad. How many times has Dr. Drew asked on the show "Have you ever been hit with an object?" and then go on to discuss how this effects kids as adults.

Many people watch this show during the 70s. People looked up to James Evans as a role model. Does this explain why so many people ended up in jail during the 80s?

Bogus argument but hopefully thought-provoking.

i like that episode of good times where the guy with the huge mouth was on a game show.
he was asked a question like "what is the price of a can of beans?" and his answer was something like $2.49. When the answer was revealed to be something like 60 cents, he grinned and said "i thought you were talking ghetto prices".

Not to crap on your argument but it's my understanding that severe physical punishment actually started winding down in the '70s - before that I think it was much more common.

Also, I at least suspect that Good Times was just reflecting not creating reality there. It might have been a nod to people who were doing stuff like that to their kids that it's OK, but I can't imagine that many people would be strongly influenced to start punishing kids that way based on the show.

Again, I have to say that I like that we're seeing so many new / infrequent posters.

An interesting sidenote for those of us old enough to remember:

The kid who found himself on the receiving end of James Evans' belt was played by Douglas Grant, who was an original member of "The Short Circus" on The Electric Company, along with a young Irene Cara.

Which one? (btw...They're all like 11 or 12).

EDIT: Being that she was born in '64, she's more likely to be between the ages of 7 and 9 in that vid.

If you mean the one in the orange sweater, that's Irene Cara.

Being Honored by the entertainment industry with an Academy Award, two Grammy’s, a Golden Globe, plus a nod from fans via a People’s Choice won all within the same year might, for some, be considered the pinnacle of a performer’s career. For actress/dancer/singer/songwriter Irene Cara, who garnered all of these awards for co-writing and performing What a Feeling, the title song from the motion picture blockbuster Flashdance, it simply serves as an auspicious beginning to the productive years ahead.

==================================================

P.S: It's the boy in the red sweater that faced James Evans' wrath in that episode of Good Times.

She bears a disturbing - almost freakish resemblance to a woman I was seeing a few months back.

Dude - I'm old - just not *quite* as old as you. When The Electric Company went off the air, I wasn't even one.

When Fame came out, I was probably old enough to remember - but I never was a huge fan of Fame (that's another one that I was put off by my sister's love of).

That picture is really wigging me out - if I didn't know better, I'd swear that was Ivonne. If I was on shrooms, my mind would be blown right about now. She's not from Puerto Rico by chance, is she?

I think she's "melting pot." If I'm not mistaken, she has some PR in her. I also think she has a sister named Ivonne.

Made ya look!

I think this is one of those situations where it's impossible to separate the act itself from the overall person. Being raised by someone who would hit their kids with an object is probably much more damaging than actually being hit with an object. But that's just my opinion.

Well we all already knew I'm damaged goods. I also remembered this morning that a few years ago my grandma (dad's mom) told me she wished I had gotten cancer instead of my brother, since she thought I would have been able to handle it better (physically).
