Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 5:29 PM Does everyone here use alcohol recreationally to escape from their problems or just to be social? For me it's to be social, with the side effect of escaping from my problems. I'm thinking of going back up to work and drinking, but I don't know if it's the healthiest thing to do with the way I'm feeling right now. I don't feel positive mentally. I don't know what I should do, stay here, be alone and sober or go back to work, drink, see friends and try to escape from my feelings? If I do drink I would like some suggestions on what fucks you up with little aftereffect in the morning. —drakeguy19 |

God damn you Onion for charging for your archives because I'd really like to be all cool and link the "Booze is my anti-drug" article right now. edit: Oh snap--apparently they came to their senses when I stopped reading: My anti-drug. —bguirk |

I turned 38 this past April. On my 34th birthday, I stopped at the liquor store on my way home from dinner to buy a six-pack. There is still one left. —Dusty TheHick |

Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 11:43 PM Well fuck all yall - I'm 30 now and haven't had a drink since I was 21 (even then, only one Mai Tai and a few sips of various beers). ... of course, Laith's got even me beat there, but still.

Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 11:48 PM both extremes are a little weird. I've gone from a beer or two a week to almost nothing. Part of it is that I don't have any friends my own age here (other than my wife) and most of the people I talk to in my program are women so it's double weird/inapropriate to go out with them. Part of it is I'm so damn busy writing/grading papers during happy hour. —bguirk |

Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 11:56 PM Ewww. I think it's time to buy yourself another emergency beer Dusty. —bguirk I have no intention of drinking it. I don't have it here, anyway; it's in my mom's fridge. I see it there every time I'm there. It's a MGD longneck. To pour it out would require opening it, and, quite frankly, I'm a bit afraid of being rendered unconscious by the stench. Besides, it has now acquired knick-knack status.
Believe it or not, it is not the oldest beer in the fridge. In fact, I think, because there are only two in there, that it is, in fact, the NEWEST. The other one is a 10oz can of Budweiser that my dad put there. He died in 2000. My mom has kept it there, partially for sentimental reasons. —Dusty TheHick |

Thursday, November 9, 2006 at 12:26 AM Tonight was interesting. Had a Mike's before I went up there and then drank 2 double Malibu pineapples in 5 minutes, then ordered another one and didn't touch it, decided to have two tall waters instead. Told my joke about light and hard to a coworker and she thought it was the funniest thing I'd ever said. We talked about her life and it seems to me like a lot of the girls in the place haven't had the best lives (the abused seeking out abusers theory comes to mind, especially in terms of some of the crap that gets pulled by customers against servers). I'm reconsidering whether I would want to even date any of the girls even if I didn't work there, because it's just like walking through a minefield when they start talking about their lives and what's happened to them. It makes me so angry at some of their parents that I can't kick them in the nuts or vag and say "Hey you fucked up in raising this person". On the other hand some of their stories make me feel guilty for bringing my parents down and I feel like I haven't suffered as much as a lot of other people I know must have and possibly still are from the mental scars some of the things they've gone through have left on them. —drakeguy19 |
