Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at 12:13 AM I was listening to an old loveline from the 4th of august 2002 (see loveline archive), and Adam and Drew talked to a girl who got raped 14 times in 4 days. Adam said that what the girl went through was the equivalent of 5 tours in Vietnam, and Drew immediately said, "I get post traumatic stress symptoms every time the damn space shuttle lands..."BOOM" and I have panic attacks for 3 days." Drew often mentioned to Adam that he has problems with panic attacks and that these problems began when he was younger. However, he never says what the tramatic events were that triggered his PTSD. The above quote would seem to indicate that Drew was in vietnam, but none of his bios mention this. Does anybody know if he served a tour in vietnam, or what the events were that began his problems with panic attacks? ANY knowledge (quotes from shows, etc.)helps. I'm really interested in figuring out what happened and I would appreciate any help I can get. —comedownicarus |

Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at 9:49 AM No, I can safely say he didn't do any Tours in 'Nam, although if you read Cracked [Dr. Drew's book..] I think it details some traumatic childhood events. Something to do with his mom being taken away in an ambulence or something. —andrewwagner777 |

Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at 10:23 AM It's funny, I actually could've sworn I too heard some reference to Drew being in Vietnam at some point. I have a vague memory of that. But you're right, there are no biographical indications of any such thing happening. And Andrew's correct about the ambulance thing. (The man with the crosses in his eyes!) —Dark Laith |

Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at 11:29 AM Yeah, that was a strange chapter... His PTSD is basically his entire childhood, but with no overt abuse. Think the equivalent of a cheerleader/gymnast/iceskater with and eating disorder and you have Drew's childhood. I also recall Drew very vaguely alluding to the fact that he had some crazy drug binge/psychotic breakdown about halfway through Amherst (that's why he always talks about serious psychological problems rearing their head in college). He's also weary to bring his parents up on the show, but that might just be a normal modesty thing. His dad was nuts with money, too. The shuttle thing is a reference to the Challenger disaster I think. —justinbaily21 |

Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at 4:21 PM The 'nam thing was a joke. It may not have been obvious in that incident, but both Drew and Adam have jokingly made references to having 'nam flashbacks, mainly because PTSD is so often associated with such veterans. —TortillaFactory |

Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at 7:32 PM Drew has said many times on the show that the panic attacks started in college and that is where he sought treatment for them. He talks about them in depth on one of the shows on my ipod, but we're talking about 80 shows so, uh, whatever. —bguirk |

Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at 7:01 AM Edited Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at 7:03 AM I don't recall ever hearing about serious childhood trauma from Dr Drew. Aside from the dream ofthe guy with crosses in his eyes and mom going to the hospital (comparatively minor stuff), and Drew certainly wasn't in vietnam (when the last troops were pulling out of Saigon in '75 drew would've only been 17 or so. I think Drew just has nervous, hyper parents with high expectations (daddy was a doctor too) and he's obviously codependent. Drew was shotgunned from private school to a New England college to med school and then general practice and later addictionology/reproductive health. In a way he was in a vacuum. This is why Adam was such a great foil for him. As far as his panic attacks, I think they were brought on in academic settings, and possibly in the context of him being a parent, and on-air performance related (the Jon Favreau thing). I think his childhood calibrated him to be a hairtrigger. I don't think he was having flashbacks, and if he was abused as a child sexually or otherwise, he's kept it a secret. —ProfessorCarbuncle |

Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at 10:55 AM Damn straight I'm right! But seriously, yes, I am nearly 100% sure that it was another joke in the same vein as they've been doing for years. "Having 'nam flashbacks" is pretty much universal slang for PTSD, though the upcoming generations might not realise this. BTW Laith, I'm not trying to be bitchy or vengeful about answering that email...just trying to give it the attention it deserves, and I'm both lazy and busy right now. —TortillaFactory |

Drew's mom being taken away in an ambulance (when he was VERY young...far too young to understand) was due to a miscarriage, and, apparently there was a great amount of blood involved, IIRC. —Dusty TheHick |
