Sunday, August 6, 2006 at 10:01 PM The long national nightmare is over. Yeah, it was preseason but there it was on the television in all its glory. Watching the Philly first team dick-slap the Raiders (Aaron Brooks huh, speaking of nightmares) was an oasis in a desert of lesser sports. Anyhow, who ya got? Bucs in the NFC (of course). The AFC is a little trickier. Let's look at the so-called contenders: The Colts are going to stumble as their window finally slams shut, they'll miss Edge The Patriots are done plus they lost some of their best players The Chiefs are never going to a Super Bowl, ever Now the Broncos look solid, oh wait, is that Plummer back there still? never mind The Bengals have too many ifs - If Palmer can play, if the defense steps up, if their players get time off for good behavior The Chargers, uh, no sorry, though I’d like to see them get there, their best quarterback is the running back, generally not a good thing The Steelers, yeah they could repeat, but it’s lame to pick the same Super Bowl teams the following year, so I’ll pass The Browns, Titans, Texans, Bills, Jets, Ravens, Raiders, No, no, no, no, no, no, hell no, no I'm going with either the Dolphins (with a healthy and rejuvenated Culpepper) to pull a miracle or the Jags to start living up to the hints of potential they've flashed. What say you? —Beat It! |

But if that is his permanent replacement, Brooks? Then we're doomed. He sucks, some of his passes were just plain awful. The Vikings have Chester Taylor at running back, who with the best offensive line in the league [Pro Bowlers Matt Birk, Steve Hutchinson and then Bryant McKinnie] and all-world Full Back Tony Richardson, he'll have a huge year. If Brad Johnson can keep his interceptions down and run the West-Coast Offense effectively, and the Vikings defense plays as well as they did in the 2nd half of last year, they'll be on top of the NFC North laughing their way to the playoffs. —andrewwagner777 |

Holy Christ, you should stick to debating anobody where your dubious knowledge shines in comparison to a lesser foe. First off, you don't want to compare Carson Palmer to Eli Manning. Palmer is a better quarterback, period. Plus, Carson sat on the bench his entire first year whereas Eli was the starter by mid-season which means that Palmer has played in about three or four more games than Eli even though he came into the league a year earlier. Yet Palmer is far more accomplished in every statistical category. There is no guarantee Manning will make the leap simply by virtue of him being in his third year. I can find just as many quarterbacks who flamed out in their third year. Generally, it's much later when a quarterback truly comes into his own, if it happens at all or if they can last. In fact, it's probably the only position where as you age you improve because the understanding of the game and the ability to read defenses is something you acquire over time. And the NFC East, with the likely exception of the Eagles, is one of the more evenly balanced divisions. The Redskins and Cowboys are the leaders followed by the Giants. (And, for the record, I'd be happy if the Redskins went 0-16 and the Cowboys perhaps won one game, yet still the fact is they are better teams than the Giants.) —Beat It! |

Thursday, August 17, 2006 at 8:52 PM Holy Christ, you should stick to debating anobody where your dubious knowledge shines in comparison to a lesser foe. I actually know quite a bit more sports than I do politics. I didn't directly compare Manning and Palmer. I gave Palmer as an example of a successful 3rd year quarterback. Different quarterbacks respond differently to be thrown into the fire right away. If you look at Roethlisberger, he didn't spend a lot of time on the bench and he played great right away whereas a guy like Alex Smith was thrown into the fire and played like shit [I think his numbers were 1 TD, and 10 or 11 picks]. Manning was solid his first full year of starting and he can only build on that. I watched the first few drives of the game today and was impressed with how accurately he was able to throw the ball [11/14 I think he was]. He's going to have a relatively healthy Shockey which will be good and Barber should post solid numbers again. Fair enough. I think he's got what it takes though. And the NFC East, with the likely exception of the Eagles, is one of the more evenly balanced divisions. The Redskins and Cowboys are the leaders followed by the Giants. (And, for the record, I'd be happy if the Redskins went 0-16 and the Cowboys perhaps won one game, yet still the fact is they are better teams than the Giants.) I agree, the Eagles aren't going to be that good...The Cowboys should be average at best, maybe 9-7. I think TO's too much of a distraction for The Tuna and he'll get fed up with him in a few weeks. I really want to say the Skins are going to have a good year, but I still don't see them being very successful just because of their QB situation. —andrewwagner777 |
