Saturday, July 15, 2006 at 1:15 AM How can someone who appreciates rock and roll history harsh on The Beatles? Tort, just out of curiosity, what do you like? I'm not trying to be agro, just asking. I like lots of things, I'm just not fond of the Beatles' sound or their lyric sense. Not sure why anyone thought I appreciated rock and roll history (I don't, particularly)...The Beatles don't thrill me. I'm also a literature buff who dislikes Shakespeare, so take that for what it's worth. As for music of that general era, I'm a big Dylan fan and I enjoy me some Stones.

That's as may be. However, they are touted as the band that is so extraordinary that everyone has to like them. Though, say, Freud has been repeatedly plaigarised and rendered almost obsolete by the improvement of the theories he developed, I can still read some of his thoughts and be amazed by his insight. But the Beatles? Not so much. Not only do I fail to understand their popularity today, I cannot comprehend their appeal in the context of their generation, either. Obviously some stimulus was needed for the youth of the world. Why couldn't it have been a better band? —TortillaFactory |

Saturday, July 15, 2006 at 1:09 PM Edited Saturday, July 15, 2006 at 1:10 PM Across The Universe Wasn't that written by Rufus Wainwright? LOL :D That's as may be. However, they are touted as the band that is so extraordinary that everyone has to like them. Though, say, Freud has been repeatedly plaigarised and rendered almost obsolete by the improvement of the theories he developed, I can still read some of his thoughts and be amazed by his insight. As I understand it (and from reading this) they revolutionized music, not once but several times. They were instrumental in creating modern Rock-n-Roll, led the British invasion, were the prototype 'self-contained' rock group and over the course of 40 years (1940-1980) had over 49 number-ones. Their influence extended beyond music into culture, clothing, the peace movement, and social awareness. But the Beatles? Not so much. Not only do I fail to understand their popularity today, I cannot comprehend their appeal in the context of their generation, either. Obviously some stimulus was needed for the youth of the world. I don't think you have enough context for the time when they came onto the scene. Listen to some of their early contemporaries and predecessors - music was a vastly different thing before them. Why couldn't it have been a better band? I think you're being too hard on them. If they were just lucky and first in line, they wouldn't have lasted so long or been so popular. —anobody |

Sunday, July 16, 2006 at 5:21 AM I just read a good book by their recording engineer. If he's telling the truth, then it's even more impressive to me that they were able to create such astonishingly original and groundbreaking music. According to him, they basically hated each other the last 3 years they were a 'band'. In that time period they recorded The White Album, Get Back, and Abbey Road! Whether or not you like their music is purely a matter of personal taste and can't be argued. But Dismissing their relevance in Rock N Roll history is just silly.

I don't dispute that they were relevant, I just wonder why it had to be them. Aside from being in the right place at the right time, I fail to see what's so special about them. —TortillaFactory |
