Bogus calls....

What does Drew and loveline mean, by the geneva Convention of bogus calls? And If he calls them out, they have to admit it, or drew has to treat the call a serious call. What is this law?? Does anyone know?

International Laws of Bogosity - If a host declares a caller's problem to be fake, the caller is required to admit it. Also referred to as "the Geneva Convention of Loveline."

Found here if you're interested.

Basically it was funny for a while but Drew has taken it too far. I say shoot that horse...or is that against the Geneva Convention?

Drew also says that if a call is serious enough in nature, then he will answer it anyway, even if it's obviously bogus, in case other people are listening with the same problem.

The only problem with that is that sometimes it seems like Drew--or Adam, when he was there would call out "bogus" every other call.

^ Agreed. Dr. Drew rides the bogus horse pretty hard.

That said, they should have a "Best of Loveline Bogus Calls". Some of them are damn funny, like the 13 year old who said his friend's mom totally came on to him.

No about 4 out of 5 times he is wrong. Well I don't really listen anymore, but when Adam was there they were both always whining "bogus," then the caller would say something like "It's NOT bogus" and then Adam would go "OK" and continue the call. Of course this is where the bogosity thing came about when people would say that when it really was bogus. Remember that girl who did a whole bunch of bogus calls and they never caught onto her? That was great.

Better than 4 out of 5 wrong, not as good as 9 out of 10 right. And you're talking about Miriam there, right? They eventually caught on to her, she was just very convincing and went with it.

Really, I thought at one point she just fessed up and then went on to tell how she had called several times before and told which calls they were? I remember Adam and Drew saying they were very impressed. I don't remember them actually catching her the first time, although I do remember Anderson saying it was her on a later call, because even after she had admitted it, she kept doing it.

I just don't see the payoff of making a bogus call that's plausible.

It's like calling the fire department, telling them a house is burning down and then stroking yourself when they believe you.

Impressive feat, that.

Maybe she wound up confessing in the end, but I distinctly remember that A&D went to the Companion to check the threads here because they were beginning to suspect that she was bogus.

Hmmm I'm not really sure, but I thought I remember her just saying at the end of the call "this was a bogus call" or something like that. I always think it's odd when they do it that way instead of Mason Jar because it seems like the point was always to lead up to the Mason Jar line, which lent for much greater drama because there was always this build-up to it instead of just saying--"this was a bogus call."

What really threw the guys about Miriam is that they questioned her first call being bogus and she refused to fess up. They took her word at that point. Then she kept calling under a number of names with similar stories and the guys got confused. I think they remembered her not admitting to being bogus though and were too mixed up to question her after that.

Ehh... I dunno about the first part there. Maybe they confronted her and she denied it, I don't remember. But it definitely wasn't similar stories under different names, it was a number of follow-up calls about the same story under one name.

I don't remember how it started but I know she used multiple names over several weeks or maybe even months. But she spaced the calls out, there were maybe 6-8 over the course of a few weeks or a few months. I think she did call more than once using the same name, but then later she used other names.

She was giving this fake name and then at one point when she called, either Drew or Adam was like "Is this Miriam?" and she was like "Oh my god, how did you know?" Drew seemed to be pretty upset by the whole thing.

I think that was Drew who recognized her (he seems to have quite a talent for that, especially considering the number of people he talks to on air and off).

...I guess you have to know what the Geneva Convention is before you can connect the dots with this running joke/rule. Basically, the callers have to play by the established rules of bogus calling war, and confess to the bogus nature of their call if they're called out in it.

yeah, Drew doesn't have the greatest comedic senses. He repeats stuff, and has bad timing. But that's ok, he knows plenty of doctor stuff, and that's why he's there. Now all we need is an acceptable cohost.

It was Ingrid, Sophia, and I think one other name but those are the two main ones. I remember Drew wasn't that upset about her making the bogus calls, he was more upset about her wasting the time of social services and suicide hotlines with her bogus calls to them.

Miriam was "outed" by TLC, but only when a guest in the studio chimed in on the evening of one of her calls. Her username is/was Miriam on here. She talked at legnth about bogus calls, even before the Sophia routine. Her last posting here was a while ago. I wonder where she went to college... if anyone would be able to sleuth a myspace or additional info, it would be grey...

I didn't know she did that. That just seems way over the line, I mean, it's one thing to call into an info-tainment show and screw around, it's another entirely to crank call suicide hotlines / social services.

Drew and Adam at first congratulated her on the scam, but they both got progressively pissed as time passed. She definitely wasted their time though and they did ask if it was bogus during the first call. She refused to fess up.

I don't remember her saying she called other places, but it sounds right. She went overboard all right, but it was cool hearing a really long call and finding out it was all bogus and Adam and Drew had no idea, like on a couple of them where she told at the end it was bogus. I mean didn't she cry and everything one time? I seem to remember that.

Hmmm....

Even if the calls were bogus, from what I've heard about her, I'd guess that she had some issues so crying might not have been that tall an order.

Her 'characters' aside, she was clearly and profoundly disturbed. The way she kept on trying to make them understand that she really cared about this girl she created and she started to worry about her and wanted to make sure she got help.
