Question for Huge Computer Geeks

Okay I was thinking about this last night for whatever reason...Probably wondering about my shitty computer and when I'm gettnig a new one. Windows 95 was the first "official" operating system. Then, 3 years later came Windows 98, then 2 more years later came a shitty update, windows NT (2000), and then the following year I think, Windows XP came out. Why hasn't there been a major update since then?

Windows NT wasn't that shitty an update, you might be thinking of Windows Me.

Pretty much because of Windows XP issues. Microsoft has had to spend the time that it would of normally spent on developing a new OS, fixing security and other issues with XP and developing their Server 2003 (since the previous version was I believe 2000) [business b4 consumer] so this cause a huge delay. They are currently in the 2nd round of Beta testing for the new OS called Windows Vista. It has close resemblence to Mac Os X if you look at the screen shots. Windows Vista is due out to home users January 2007. hope this helps

I'd advocate getting a Mac too.

They're a lot cheaper now, the new ones use the same chips as PCs (Intel Core Duos) and (I would argue) the OS is intrinsically better.

The biggest reason I switched was that I use Unix tools and it's nice to have a polished consumer level OS that has them available (I'm guessing that's not even remotely entering your mind).

There are a slew of reasons you might want to switch but I don't have much time so I'll let Apple tell you about some of those.

As Eric pointed out, Vista is scheduled to come out in Jan, 2007 (assuming it doesn't slip again; when it was called Longhorn and was supposed to have more features, it was originally slated to come out in 2004 or 2005, IIRC - it's slipped so many times, I can't remember any more).

It'll still have a new UI and a few cool features, including a nice little rip-off of Exposé (one of those you never knew you missed it till you had it and once you did, you couldn't live without it things for me).

1985: Windows 1.0
1987: Windows 2.0
1990: Windows 3.0
1992: Windows 3.1

Edit: I'm glad they started giving them fancy names. I was shocked to learn that Mac just keeps titling them OS-whatever.

Yes, I know that MACs are the thing of the future, but I'm still hard core Windows user because more people still have it, and it's nearly impossible to send a document or spreadsheet (to most people) without having it end up in some cryptic messed up crap.

Oh and I wasn't aware of 1.0 and 3.0 and whatnot. I was only born in the late '80's so I'm not that familiar with operating systems.

Why hasn't there been a major update since then?

When you factor in the enterprises that spend billions on supporting XP, developers that need a stable platform for their software, and the cost of MS supporting a more fragmented user base, I think there is an optimal cadence for forcing a new OS on everyone. Religious arguments aside, XP is still a reasonable NT-based platform.

I keep wanting to buy a Mac because they all look so dam good but every time I try one in a shop the crappy mouse movement and the whole enviroment just put me off.
Anyway what kind of set up's do you guys have - I'm running a windows set up as im sure you know - with two internal drives an 80gb for the operating system and crap (programmes etc) and due to a major catastrophe I now have a 250gb drive (replacing a second 80gb) for all my music 64gb - and 78gb of American Radio - Howard Stern, Loveline, TACS, O & A, Ron and Fez and Kevin and Bean(and a brit- some Ricky Gervais podcasts) and also The Adam Carolla Project 3gb - some pretty cool films (jackass stylee) 4.5gb that my son and his friends have made. And a backup of windows because the last problem cost a shit load to sort out. And I also have a 200gb external drive to back up my music and to keep pictures of an "adult nature" :-) ho hum . Oh by the way anymore American shows I should add to my list?

It's funny that the first ad I'd ever seen for Apple that was specifically about keeping viruses and bugs away (the ones with the guy from Dodgeball) aired the same day that there was a story on CNN about cracks beginning to appear in Apples security.

For the record, I currently and have always used Windows/PC, not out of any special allegiance, just familiarity. My dad brought home our first PC when I was 7, and I'm just used to them.

I started out on a PC too. I started using Unix at a place I worked. Then in school. Now I use OS X for my desktop as often as possible. At home and at work. You could say I'm a late convert.

I'm a petty snob so I point out my OS is better than your OS whenever I get the chance.

my home network currently includes 3 PC's all running windows. my main squeeze has a 2.93ghz P4 over clocked to 3.2ghz with 2 dvd burner/players, 2 hard drives totalling 420GB and 1GB RAM. plurrybot has a dual boot option (XP or 98 for some older progs and hardware i'm attached to) and rarely sleeps. it has a 2.4ghz P4, 6 hard drives that total 330GB and 512MB RAM.
i also have an old HP desktop with dual P3 500mhz processors running windows 2000 with 320MB o' RAM. i put it in my bedroom so i can stream video or listen to music while i sleep or fag off.

Now that Apple has switched to Intel (DAG barf drop) for Macs you can easily build a computer than runs Mac OS X smoothly.

You could build a PowerPC compatible Mac that runs the latest OS X release using all non-Apple parts, but it's not easy.

Edit: I'm glad they started giving them fancy names. I was shocked to learn that Mac just keeps titling them OS-whatever.

You mean like Leapord, Tiger, Panther and Lion?

Yes, I know that MACs are the thing of the future,

OK - dude, we gotta talk. MAC != Mac.

it's nearly impossible to send a document or spreadsheet (to most people) without having it end up in some cryptic messed up crap.

Complete and utter bullshit.

I do it all the time with my boss. Works well with Word and Excell (there are Mac and Windows versions and the file formats are the same and have been for a number of years)

There is an optimal release schedule but I doubt that's why they haven't shipped Vista.

I don't even doubt it - I'm certain it's got nothing to do with it (more a matter of being overly ambitious, under-coordinated and suffering from feature / scope creep while tied into legacy code).

crappy mouse movement

That's adjustable, you know. Did you go to an Apple Store or have you just seen them in Comp USA? For some reason, most stores have them screwed up and poorly maintained.

It's funny that the first ad I'd ever seen for Apple that was specifically about keeping viruses and bugs away (the ones with the guy from Dodgeball) aired the same day that there was a story on CNN about cracks beginning to appear in Apples security.

There have been a few security holes in OS X (and in every Unix) but comparing them to Windows (especially pre-XP) is like comparing a weeping seam with a huge gaping hole in the boat.

Also, there haven't been any real exploits for OS X in the wild (to the best of my knowledge) - that's not to say there never will be, just that it hasn't happened yet.

I started out on a PC too. I started using Unix at a place I worked. Then in school. Now I use OS X for my desktop as often as possible. At home and at work. You could say I'm a late convert.

GIO, I'm sure you'll be as disturbed as I to know that we both have such similar stories.

when i can build my own mac from a parts site like newegg or tiger direct, then i will have a mac. otherwise, i'll just live without. oh well.

I used to feel that way and build myself but then I got tired of it and realized that it's not that much more expensive to buy something pre-built.

Now that Apple has switched to Intel (DAG barf drop) for Macs you can easily build a computer than runs Mac OS X smoothly.

But not legally.

I've drunk the Kool-Aid and don't think the Intel switch is that bad (if I bought a new dual core Intel based MacBook Pro, it'd be about 10x faster by any benchmark than my current 1GHz PowerPC based PowerBook).

Macs are for retards who fancy themselves "computer savy" and think that video editing is a substitute for a good computer.

Total and utter bullshit (so much so that I shouldn't even respond). There are a lot of idiots with Macs but that's got more to do with the fact that there are lots of idiots out there than that they gravitate toward Macs.

Even with Cygwin, Windows XP is a poor substitute for a Linux or BSD box. Blah blah blah blah blah...

I actually had a computer that only ran DOS. Two 5 1/4 drives.

The day a Mac earns me some money I'll buy one. My only remaining issues with them is they don't have Visual Studio.net and you will make a trip to the genius bar at some point during your ownership period. I can fix my own PC, but if a crack a Mac case Apple has a problem with it.

Well... there are XCode and Eclipse (but I will agree, much to my chagrin, Visual Studio's code completion beats anything else I've ever tried).

and you will make a trip to the genius bar at some point during your ownership period. I can fix my own PC, but if a crack a Mac case Apple has a problem with it.

I've never made a trip to the genius bar for any of my Macs (though I have had to send one in for water damage).

The PowerMacs are a breeze to crack open and fix (they're beautiful inside - like Sun or SGI workstations; you can even do almost everything without any tools).

iMacs and the notebooks are another story (I've opened my PowerBooks many times but I don't recommend it for the faint of heart).

"I actually had a computer that only ran DOS. Two 5 1/4 drives." said bguirk

I had a Sinclair ZX81 - that did no have hard drives in fact it had nothing, It plugged into the TV and then for the next hour you would type in code (Basic) (copied from a magazine)on the crappy keyboard which was a plastic membrane like your mobile phones and each key had multiple tasks. After the hour typing in code you could run the programme that usually was a dot moving across a screen so dam exciting. You could not save the code so when you turned the computer off that was it! Good Times.
I never learnt any form of code (that explains why I dont even have the quote at the top in italics) and although I am sure that makes me gay - A computer like a car is a tool/toy just like my car or TV I dont need to know how it works as long as it does.

My first time was 1994

Me too.

My first job (lasting a year from the beginning of spring semester my senior year of HS) was at Intel's Chandler site.

I got my first introduction to Unix (well, VAX and AIX), my first real introduction to programming C (before then it was mostly BASIC for me) and my first chance to play with Mosaic.

It was the beginning of the end for me, really.

Gradually I got less and less done and spent more and more time on the web.

Back then, the internets were a lot more boring. I spent most of my time downloading satelite weather pictures and hanging out at at Le Web Museum (which is, beyond all reason and expectation, still in existence today).

By the way, Ace - in case you're interested / for future reference, <i>this would be in italics if you typed it in</i>

The great thing about Macs is that you can be an utter novice and still get along just fine. So your above comment is sorta correct. I'm a designer and use a mac for any and all photo, animation, video, layout, web, illustration work that I do on a day-to-day basis. (but I don't use any iStuff (iMovie, iPhoto, etc) except iTunes.
