MANALAPAN, Fla. - The pianist Yanni was arrested at his Manalapan home after a domestic dispute with his girlfriend, authorities said.

Yanni, whose legal name is John Yanni Christopher, was arrested early Friday and faces a domestic battery charge, according to a police report.

The Greek-born musician had asked his girlfriend Silvia Barthes, 33, to leave his beachfront home after they returned from dinner, the report said.

Barthes told police the 51-year-old singer was verbally abusive during a car ride home. She told police that when they returned to the house she attempted to take her clothing off hangers and put it in a bag to leave. Yanni forcefully took her clothing off the hangers and threw them on the ground, according to a police report.

Barthes told officers he then grabbed her by her forearms and shook her, throwing her on the bed, and jumped on top of her. Barthes had a bloody lip and told officers that she thought she might have hit herself when Yanni shook her arms, according to the report.

Yanni told police that Barthes had kicked him and that he believed he had injured his middle finger during the incident, the report said.

"I want everyone to know that I am completely innocent of any allegations made with respect to the events at my home on the night of March 2. These allegations are cruel, false, without merit and baseless," Yanni said in a statement released Monday to the Associated Press by his personal manager Danny O'Donovan. "At a more appropriate time and place, I hope and pray I will have an opportunity to address my fans and colleagues all over the world."

No one answered a call to a listing for a John Christopher in Manalapan late Monday.

In comments to The Palm Beach Post and South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Yanni's lawyer Orlando Gonzalez denied the musician ever hit or harmed Barthes and accused her of manufacturing the story to hurt the singer's reputation.

"He absolutely is not guilty and did not strike that woman," Gonzalez told the Palm Beach Post, adding that "the last thing this man would want to do is hurt his hands."

Gonzalez told the paper that staff at the home had witnessed the night's events and that they could dispute Barthes' account.

Repeated after-hours calls to Gonzalez's office by The Associated Press were not answered.

bogus arrest? bogus post?

—ProfessorCarbuncle

It was a bogus beating just to make him more "street." On his new album he talks about pulling Kenny G's hair and calling him a bitch. On another song he calls John Tesh out by saying "I fucked Connie last week 'cause I'm the best New Age pianist motherfucker!" None of it's genuine--it's all fake posturing.

BTW--There is a Yanni CD in my office. We pulled it from the laptop of one of the mechanics and we're waiting to see if he has the balls to ask for it back. That or we're waiting for him to come up with one of his mechanic buddies so we can say"Hey--we forgot to give you your Yanni CD back when we fixed your laptop. Sorry."

I thought Yanni was married to Linda Evans.

Yanni and Linda divorced a while ago. I'm sure that just knowing that fact lowers my IQ by 20 points, but it was in USAToday.com.

I think your co-worker should be beaten mercilessly for being in possession of a Yanni cd. No jury in the world would convict you.

See, Yanni gets a bad rap. 90% of people who have say that Yanni's music sucks, havent even heard it. Its just not cool to like Yanni.

Live at the Acropolis is pretty cool. At least he's not John Tesh.

Ive never heard John Teshs' music. But I dont like it, Ill tell you that right now.

I've caught snips of Yanni while flipping channels. He has a PBS special--it's probably live at the Acropolois. The music blows. You've heard Tesh if you watched the NBA on NBC or the Olympics '92-'98, he's written a lot of music that's used on TV. It also blows. I was once stuck at the gate on an America West flight out of Vegas for two hours. They were playing Christmas music videos. One right after another I saw Michael Bolton, Kenny G, Yanni, and John Tesh. It was hell on earth.

The confusing thing about it all tho, is that Yanni's music doesnt have any vocals. Its just instruments playing. Thats what music is....instruments.

We dont have anymore music with actual musicianship anymore. All we get all day is these ballers/players yappping about the same fucking garbage for 10 years now. Rims, Hoes, Clothes, bling dat, know what im sayin, Crunk tho on the real tip dog. That shit is an EMBARRRRASSSSSMMMENT to this country.

Yet Yanni playing some classical scales on a piano is whack.

Fuck all this, dawg, nahmean? fo real tho nahmean? what what im going and buying everysingle Yanni and John Tesh cd I can find.

Actually, I liked "Live At the Acropolis." I just didn't know that it was by Yanni. My friend burned a cd for me but didn't put his name on it, just the title. The Yanni stuff that I didn't care for was the music that was advertised on TV commercials.

We have plenty of people with actual musicianship in this country--pull out your local alternative weekly and find the jazz section. If you live in a city of more the 100K, you will have at least 3 pianists better than Yanni's tired shit. Nationally we have pianists like Keith Jarrett, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea that all make Yanni sound like he's doing a 4th grade recital and those are just the household names. The problem isn't the lack of good music, but the laziness of a listening public that is content to take what is spoon fed to them by a few major media outlets. Get out to some clubs people.
