The mainstream group (later becoming the Sunnis) believed that either the people should select, or that a council of selected people should choose, the successor to lead the Muslim people. The other group (later the Shi'ites) believed that the Prophet's closest male relative (his nephew Ali) should inherit the position of leadership. The Shi'ites lost, and the Prophet's best friend Aby Bakr got the caliphate. Despite Ali getting to be caliph later on (the Sunnis at the earlier time had simply considered him too young to lead), the Shi'ites never really stopped being angry about the whole thing. There are other differences between the two factions nowadays, of course, but that was the original schism between the two. —Dark Laith |
