Thanks, that was a great trip down memory lane. I had forgotten that there was a time when Adam actually would challenge guests while they were there instead of waiting until after they left to bag on them.

Good times indeed.

And is it just me or does the "Colombian" guy remind anyone of Majandra Fan. At least I can see him generating the same "oh christ, I'm outta here" feeling from his coworkers when he traps them in the breakroom and wants to espouse his world view.

Wow!

Somehow missed this one.

Sounds like Jenny's got some.... issues.

edit - you can definitely hear that she knows (or thinks she knows) more than the average person and is used to people just accepting whatever she says as fact. She really doesn't like being confronted with reality by Dr. Drew / Adam - both of whom, I think, were actually fairly cordial (especially considering how outrageous / inaccurate most of the claims she makes are).

Claiming that taking Oral Contraceptives increases the chance of STD is just bs

That's actually the worst thing about her - she takes things that have some tenuous foundation in fact (the morning after pill can (though very rarely) prevent implantation; you can get STDs if you have indiscriminate sex and don't use barrier protection), selectively cherry-picking evidence and using spurious reasoning to come to the conclusions she decided a priori that she wanted to reach.

It would be better if she was only saying things that were blatantly and demonstrably false - you could dispatch her quickly and show her for what she is. As it is, she forces people to get stuck in a quagmire of details in order to prove her wrong.

If you say "yes, there's a *slight*, *minuscule*, completely negligible chance that the morning after pill *might* *rarely* prevent implantation but ... ", someone like her will strip away the qualifiers and twist your words into "yes, the morning after pill works by preventing implantation".

It's a good thing her rhetorical skills aren't better because even if you win a debate with someone like that on all points, they can still come off well.

A bit off topic but I'm sure it's no coincidence that those tactics are reminiscent of people who try to argue against evolution.

Also bear in mind, this episode is from five years ago. I wonder how much (if any) of what she said has perhaps since been demonstrated to be wrong.

Dark Laith

anobody

+

Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at 2:04 PM

I wonder how much (if any) of what she said has perhaps since been demonstrated to be wrong.

I could be wrong but I believe that, at the time, it was suspected but not verified that the morning after pill could, occasionally interfere with implantation.

Since then, it's been conclusively demonstrated that the primary mode of action is to prevent ovulation but there is an extremely slight but real risk of preventing implantation (where slight is nonzero but close enough that it could be ignored and no greater than taking various other medications that aren't intended to interfere with pregnancy).

http://acogjnl.highwire.org/cgi/content/full/100/1/65 (among many others)

Stepping back a bit - I don't see what the big deal would be even if it actually did prevent implantation - what's the practical difference between an egg and sperm cell meeting but not being able to implant and dying off versus never meeting. Especially since spontaneous abortion is so common anyway.

People getting so caught up and superstitiously assigning magical attributes to a clump of cells is just bizarre to me.

anobody

Dark Laith

+

Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at 2:07 PM

No, no, I know about the potential to interfere with implantation. (I completely agree with your last point there.) I was thinking more along the lines of the risks of getting STDs, and the alleged increased breast cancer risk in progesterone-based pills (or in the estrogen ones, for that matter; Drew pointed out that it was a theoreitcal possibility, but that no research had been done on it, and that no such effects had been reported).

Dark Laith

anobody

+

Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at 2:41 PM
Edited Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at 2:49 PM

Oh that. It depends on the type of cancer - there's a very slightly increased risk for some types (breast / others)... and a slightly decreased risk for others (ovarian; that was known then - funny how she chose to focus on the ones that increased).

BCPs have been used for more than 40 years and the hormones were at much higher doses early on so there's actually a lot of data correlating use and risk of cancer and heart disease.

The cancer risk is a red herring, at best. Statistics for rare events are funny things too. Not too long ago, there was a big sensational story about how birth control could raise the risk of circulatory events such as heart attack and stroke by as much as 200%.

That sounds scary and impressive until you look at the numbers and realize that nearly 200% is from something like 0.6-1.2 deaths per million to something *huge* like.... 1.3 to 2.4 deaths per million.

Not only that but the increased risk be partially mitigated by pre-screening and taking various precautions like not smoking and getting regular physicals... not to mention (as Dr. Drew often does) that in the US, the risk of maternal death during pregnancy is around 11-22 per 100,000. Oh - that's only about... 10-100x greater than the combined risk of oral contraceptives.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here - I just get so infuriated with people (especially religious nutjobs) selectively culling and twisting evidence to support their retarded agendas.

Seriously, though, I'm not - or any religion, for that matter.

Still, I'm not a huge fan of abortion and I totally agree with you, Shortdude.

You see exactly the same thing with the 'war on drugs' - the people who claim to be trying to reduce use of drugs put out laughable propaganda that erodes the credibility of everyone who says something bad about drugs.

Slightly OT but my favorite consequence of all the quasi-religious 'maintain your virginity till marriage' is young girls doing oral and anal because they didn't want to 'soil' themselves (or violate their wacko contract).

I don't think I'm any more healthy than you for being bothered by that sort of stuff - at best, just a bit less desensitized to it.

I once dated a chick who had to cover her eyes whenever a movie had a scary part. The two movies that stand out in my mind that we watched together were The Sixth Sense and Blue Streak.

Now, I grant you that there were a few spooky moments in the sixth sense and it was kinda cute to see her covering her eyes..... at first. When she was doing it to parts of Blue Streak, though, it almost made me want to slap her.

I guess she just wasn't exposed to much of that sort of thing so never developed a tolerance to it.... but come on, Blue Streak?

Anyway - it seems that now I'm in her position, relative to you, Laith.

Even worse - they think that, they're being condescending and they actually are slow.

You could hear her voice cracking a bit throughout the discussion so you also know she's not even that confident of her own argument (probably used to spewing her nonsense to like-minded individuals who are just gonna mindlessly nod in agreement with whatever she says).

she is so annoying, im glad adam didn't back down.
Me too - though I certainly wouldn't expect him to.

I often wonder about that, actually - if you have a guest who's a moron / spewing nonsense, is there a tactful way you can call them on it without scaring off potential future guests?

Here, I'm thinking of the psychics more than anything - I mean, unless you work for The Daily Show (or The Cobair Report), you can't exactly invite people on your show, humiliate them / make them look stupid and then expect your supply of guests not to dry up.

anobody

Dark Laith

+

Sunday, April 23, 2006 at 12:19 PM

Naw, you just have to make sure to invite some non-stupid guests on. Then you'll attract more non-stupid guests, who won't be scared off because they'll be smart enough to realize that you're only bashing on the stupid guests! See, it's fool-proof. (Largely due to circular logic.)
