Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at 7:38 PM I just got around to listening to tues. TACS, and in the 6 oclock hour Adam says he never learned to read. I always knew he couldn't read well but he claimed he couldn't fill out a job application without taking it home. Is he joking or what? —rhino369 |

Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at 8:03 PM I don't think he's joking, but I do think he's exaggerating. I recall he reported his sister saying something similar, something about how she got wasted on Thanksgiving and yelled at their parents about their childhood and how they "never learned to read." —Dark Laith |

Adam can certainly read, we've heard him read the caller's questions on the computer monitor on LLine several times. And his rate of reading didn't sound particularly slow or awkward though he did mispronouce a word once or twice. I think he means that he has to read a tax statement or other paperwork several times to get a clue what it means. —ProfessorCarbuncle |

Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at 8:47 PM Considering that he's done television several times, he has to be fairly proficient reader. Why? Teleprompters. It takes a bit of work to get use to reading the damn things, so I'd say he's probably exaggerating. Is he reading Tolstoy? No. He wasn't a great student in high school, but was smart enough that he picked up a book or two while he was doing the carpentry thing, and made up for lost time. Not that he'll ever, ever admit to actually reading a book. His wife probably doesn't even know. Some people hide their porn in the back of the bookcase. He hides books in the porn. —tweaker |

Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at 9:33 PM Teleprompters ah, yes. Of course. I also remember adam mentioning that he and Jimmy read off of cue cards for the man show, with different colored ink indicating each others lines.

Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at 9:38 PM There's a difference between "can't read" and "no interest in reading". By the vocabulary he uses, obviously Adam reads very well. He just doesn't take any special pleasure from reading, is all. I mean, obviously anyone as pathetic as to be a great fan of Survivor will get no satisfaction from the written word.

Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at 10:07 PM I feel bad for all children of hippies. Adam's description of his early alternative schooling reminds me of the insanity that is the Waldorf school 'system.' Not learning to read until 6 or 7 is a crime against the spongy mind of a child (which, incidentally, manages to not absorb those vague toxins permeating the good mother earth.) —Mahalo |

Thursday, March 2, 2006 at 11:02 AM Also consider Adam's problem with "Push" and "Pull." It's not that he can't read the words, it's that he reads words as individual letters, rather than whole words, like most people who learn to read normally. Mahalo is right, it's largely Adam's hippie parents' fault. (But just because I agree with him doesn't mean I'm not still going to get his license suspended for the medical board Carolla-ectomy fiasco. Har! What now!) —Dark Laith |

Thursday, March 2, 2006 at 12:55 PM I was in the Waldorf School system from 3rd - 6th grade. I always laughed when Adam would say alternative schools were kids throwing dirt claudes and horses asses, because that is exactly what we did. By the end of 6th grade, I didn't know cursive, couldn't spell (still can't as you can see), I didn't know how to multiply, divide, or add fractions. I knew how to throw dirt pretty damn well though ;) —yoyoma02 |
