Friday, February 10, 2006 at 7:39 PM FORT LAUDERDALE (AP) — A Haitian national faces federal charges after baggage screeners found a human skull with teeth, hair and skin in her checked luggage at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, authorities said Friday. Myrlene Severe, 30, a permanent U.S. resident, arrived Thursday afternoon from Cap Haitien, Haiti, aboard Lynx International Airlines Flight 210, said Barbara Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Miami. Customs and Border Protection officials "found a human head with organic matter inside of her checked baggage," ICE Special Agent Erick Hernandez wrote in an affidavit in support of a criminal complaint. Severe told authorities "she had obtained the package, which contained the human head, from a male in Haiti for ... use as a part of her voodoo beliefs. Severe also stated that the purpose of the package was to ward off evil spirits," Hernandez wrote. "It still had teeth, hair and bits of skin and lots of dirt," Gonzalez said. The criminal complaint filed Friday charges Severe with smuggling a human head into the U.S. without proper documentation, failure to declare the head and transporting hazardous material in air commerce. She faces a maximum of 15 years in prison if convicted on all charges, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida. Severe remained held Friday on a $100,000 bond. Thursday, February 16, 2006 at 2:15 AM A youth who tied himself to a foldaway bed because he was bored was rescued by police after becoming trapped in its mechanism, officials said on Tuesday. Neighbors alerted the police after hearing the 16-year-old's cries for help late on Monday night. When police entered the apartment, they found the bed had folded itself away and the red-faced youth was tied upside down to it with a tow-rope and wire and unable to free himself. "He said he did it because he was bored," said a spokesman for the local police. "He was visibly embarrassed but it was also a pretty amusing situation."

Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at 2:35 AM Man charged with killing roommate over toilet paper MOSS BLUFF, Fla. (AP) — A man accused of fatally beating his roommate with a sledgehammer and a claw hammer because there was no toilet paper in their home has been arrested. Franklin Paul Crow, 56, was charged Monday with homicide in the death of Kenneth Matthews, 58, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office. Capt. Thomas Bibb said Crow initially denied his involvement, but confessed during questioning. Crow told investigators that the men were fighting about the toilet paper over the weekend when Matthews pulled out a rifle. Crow said he then began beating Matthews with the sledgehammer and claw hammer, according to an affidavit. Matthews was beaten so badly he had to be identified through his fingerprints, detectives said. Crow was being held at the Marion County jail without bond.
