ok, so i can format and reinstall a system running windows blindfolded & on morphine drip, but recently i have been asked to reformat and reinstall OS 10.2 on a 3 year old mac laptop.

i am asking for any tips or advice anyone has regarding this procedure. like, how it differs from windows 98/2000/xp.
also, will all the utilities i need be found on the 10.2 disk or do i need additional software? i have never even surfed the web before on a mac and screwing up this girl's computer is not in my best interest at all. i appreciate anything anyone can throw my way knowledge wise.

thank you and god bless...

OK, easiest solution first:
1) Back up her data. (Easiest way is to turn her laptop into a firewire drive by holding down the T key during power up. Then copy the contents to another computer)
2) Get an Apple CD with 10.2 on it. Likely its the one that came with the computer.
3) Put it into her laptop
4) restart it holding down the C key
5) Follow prompts
6) While its reformatting ask her gently prodding questions about her sex life.

enjoy - J

i was going to back up her critical stuff on a flash drive (she mostly just has still images and email/word docs saved so i think i'm only looking at 1 GIG worth of stuff to back up). reformat, re-install 10.2, then dump all of her stuff from the flash drive back on. sound like a decent plan?

also, does 10.2 have cd burning software built in?

please elaborate on turning her computer into a firewire drive. are you saying i could hook her mac up via fire wire port to my XP desktop computer to one of its USB ports and my system will recognize her computer and i'll be able to transfer files that way?
...or what special networking crap would i have to go thru to make her mac and my pc running XP pro connect/file share with each other thru a 4 port router?.

(thanks again justnorthofthebridge and to whoever else may contribute. while it's reformatting, i'll hold her hand, look deep into her eyes and ask her why she didn't buy a PC like the other 98% of us.)

Target Disk Mode...you need to have a firewire port...and maybe(?) another Mac (OS X can read Windows formated HDs, but not the other way without software) But that won't matter, you likely do not have a firewire port.

After the install, make sure you turn on the software firewall, I can not remember where they hid it...somewhere in System Preferences (maybe network?). The run the auto-update system pref...you will have a lot of patches (one of which turns on the software firewall...which is why I can not find it anymore).

MAKE SURE you have the right install disk. I think OS X always ships with 2 disks, the OS disc, and developer tools. Also find out if she runs any applications in Classic. If that is the case, you will have to also install the old OS 9.

It will have *some* built in burning capabilities, that is if she has a Superdrive (basically a CD/DVD burner...I want to say DVD+...but don't hold me to it, I don't have one).

I think that should help, I wish I knew about the networking, I know that Mac -> PC is easy, but PC-> Mac might require software to recognize the mac volume. Basically if you know the IP address of the machines, just open the sharing system pref....and ah, that is where the software firewall hides! It has an option for SMB Windows file sharing...even FTP file sharing. So if the Mac is stable enough to run, that is a good way at least to back up the back up.

Good luck.

yeah, that's basically it. There's a reason why people say Macs are for dummies, they're pretty easy to use. I use one every day for work and when I get home. And yes, Mac osx comes with burning capabilties built in assuming she has a drive capable of burning cds/dvds. And don't you dare talk her out of her wise decision to buy a mac like all the MS sheep out there.

yes -grey, i know this topic might cause one to yawn, but i thought i'd share more...

well, i looked at the ibook last night and decided her problem was that the system was running flakey because she was nearly out of disk space. when we shut down all other programs and burned at a slower speed, both disks we tried were successful. i have advised her to clear off some space and defragment... oh wait, OS X doesn't come with a defrag utility? WTF??? anyone know where i can get a good mac defrag program for nothing?

Just because there are more "MS" users than mac doesn't mean mac users aren't sheep. Mac dorks are among the most annoying people on the planet.

OS X uses a journaling filesystem, and doesn't need to be defraged.

Only outdated file systems like FAT32, and NTFS need to be "defraged."

Sounds good ZT but the apple system in question was still running poorly.
The apple website promised milk and honey,
but it's blood and honey more like.

yeah, i read that... and then i read conflicting things from people who were actually Mac techies...
dork talk

i personally thought her hard drive was hunting and pecking more than it should have been. i attributed that to her disk being 90% full and never defragged in 3 years.

another thing... since i now have free access to an OS X installation disk, i want to get a mac and learn how to use the damn thing. is there a diffence between the OS for laptops vs desktop models or is it the same thing? how much should i pay for used desktop or laptop that is at least 500MHZ and has at least 128MB of RAM?

one more question for you Mac people who i am slowly warming up to...

i know when i install XP pro, it takes about 4-5 gig on the hard drive before i install all the other progs.
how much space on the hdd does a freshly installed OS X take up? anyone know for sure? it must be much less than XP service pack 347.

OS X Tiger is going to be the same for desktop and laptop, one thing about Macs is they are so user friendly, everytihng makes so much sense and they really make it easy to learn. I just got a 15" powerbook which i happen to be on right now. I'm pretty sure the 12" ibooks would have what you need for $1,000. I'm not sure about the space needed for OS X but the really nice thing is they dont load your computer with shit that you dont need like every other company does. No need to clean your computer up right when you get it. Macs are PC's without all the bullshit, everything that you hate about your PC will have a solution that you are completely happy with on Mac. My powerbook is the best thing i have ever purchased.

I wasn't posting to say it was a yawn, I was mimicking ZT's pic. I was also making a racist joke that Nicole Richie is a monkey because she's half black. Now that you made me explain myself, I feel shame. To divert you away from my racism, here's what Hilary Duff would look like if she put her head under a donut icing machine.
