Saturday, September 3, 2005 at 5:51 PM Edited Saturday, September 3, 2005 at 5:53 PM ...and I bought it, too, in hopes there'd be an entertaining description of Drew's character. Alas, the poor author commissioned to translate this masterwork to the page seems to have taken to heart Beverly Cleary's advice about the use of description in pre-teen novels. All Dr. Ryan gets is "She met her father, Dr. Andrew Ryan, an obstetrician, stumbling groggily down the hall. His clothes were rumpled and his graying hair tousled." That's actually a lot of description for this book that even sidesteps around the comedy-beauty-shop-full-of-sassy-black-women being full of sassy black women. On the good side, the last color plate is Drew squishing the Olsen twins together with his mighty arm muscles. He's got a strange, wary expression, like any minute he's going to have to abandon the shoot and go fight crime. I guess I could pin that up in my locker. —Dubious Merit |

Saturday, September 3, 2005 at 5:57 PM I can't imagine Drew looking groggy, his clothes rumpled, or his hair tousled (although I'm not excatly sure what tousled is). This must be based off the original script, because Drew always looks perfect. —mikeyfish |

Sunday, September 4, 2005 at 7:20 AM I'm going to buy the novelization for my mom! I made her watch the movie with me a couple months ago and she still hasn't let me forget it. I was home for a visit last week and Mom wanted me to watch The Wedding Date with her. I declind and she said, "Oh come on Abby, I watched that horrible New York Minute with you." This was MONTHS ago. I was also a big Beverly Cleary fan when I was young. Ramona Quimby anyone? —shiner like a diamond |
