Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 8:56 AM Jack radio is going to be the downfall of the industry. whole radio stations are essentially being replaced by ipods set on random at a rate of 1 a week. This is so long to jobs for people in the radio business, and will leave only talk shows and robots. Moral is, screw 'em, don't listen to it for the good of the business, please. —Stu-pot |

Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 11:21 AM Jack FM is a radio station with no human D.J.s, just a playlist of random songs. Also, to 000, eh, I have no other soapbox. —Stu-pot |

Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 12:33 PM It's called automation people and most radio stations already do it--they just have DJs recorded during breaks. The only jobs lost in such a format are the few DJ jobs which arguably weren't necessary to begin with. Everything else goes on like it did before: sales, promotion, production, etc. —clodhopper |

Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 12:41 PM I don't mind the DJ's if they do interviews and tell where all the concerts are and stuff. I actually don't tune out when the FM 94.9 DJ's start talking. At least Jack FM replaced all those faggy DJ's on Star 100.7. Oh, Jack FM sounds like the IPOD of someone you would never want to hang out with. They suck. —Hashmeer Shashmeer |

Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 2:11 PM College radio will backsell music as well--that is, if the DJ isn't horribly baked and/or incompetent at the time. I've been DJing for three years now and I always am sure to backsell the music and add in some info which make be written on the CD. To me, that's what a DJ should be doing in the first place. —clodhopper |

Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 3:16 PM We have had that sorry ass thing here for about 5 months or so. They have decided to let anyone submit thier playlist to be played, they also have a phone number so all the little teenie boppers can send "shout outs" to thier homies. They also play everything, country, rock, hip hop, pop, R&B, punk, alternative, oldies, classic rock etc. Bad Idea. —dalamar23666 |

Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 3:52 PM When I was having dental surgery the other day, they were playing the radio and it was on Jack FM. I have to say, I was seriously rocking out. It may have been the nitrous, but when they played Sunday Bloody Sunday and then Love Shack, it was sooooo on. —mandeemoo22 |

Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 5:42 PM ^Agreed. A great combination is a public/college station that has a website that has a full and instant list of played songs. KEXP here in Seattle does this. Never have to wait around to find out who the artist is. Love it. The Jack station here made agood move in reducing the bs not-rock (think Neil Diamond) and upping the harder/newer stuff a bit. I'll admit it's a decent option when scanning the pre-sets. The "caller" generated station endorsements are vile shading to funny, *always* featuring what sound like sun-blasted, unfiltered Camel-smoking alkies. —i'm just saying... |

Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 10:11 PM You can thank Canada for Jack FM being on the air (sorry). Since we have had it the longest, let me tell you what is going to happen. Jack opens to HUGE ratings. It is new, it is different. After 3 or 4 books (so 9-12 months) the ratings have peaked, and start to drop. People become angry over the lack of theme. You might like disco, and hate 80s, and somewhat like classic rock with some alternative rock...however, you are probably in a certain mood when you turn on the radio. If you are hate 80s pop...you will probably never turn on that station again. Jack hops around too much. I know I once liked Jack...but stopped because it was too discordant. I like a theme, people do not want to step out of their comfort zone...and that *is* the basis of Jack. Jack is *not* a voice track only (ie automation) format. In Vancouver, where the first Jack FM is, the only reason they have kept up their ratings is because of the live on air talent they have. But, there was a lot of talent to pick up form the former top rated music station that was destroyed because the mega corp that owned 4 stations wanted their two FM properties to be more distinct from each other. —Laxdude |

Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 10:31 PM Portland canned one of the longest running stations in this area in favor of "Charlie FM" It sounds identical to Jack but I actually like the format and variety. Adam is dead on with his lightning round since DJ's only detract from a music station. Talk radio is a different matter obviously. —Kmmeeuwsen |

We've been members before---I told them last time that if they didn't messing with Charlie Rose's time slot I would stop pledging. —bguirk |

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 9:02 AM I don't really mind the pledge drives so much. They still play almost as much music as any other time, and still waaay more than commercial radio at any given time. Plus, they usually have two DJs on at a time during the drive instead of just one, so it's a chance to hear intelligent banter between two true music lovers instead of a couple of blathering idiots talking nonsensical crap. —catloaf |

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 12:28 PM One of the jacks, or "simon" as it is called out here has a live, local morning show, and the rest of the day is all music, nothing else. Since I love morning talk, having a talkshow in the AM and music for the other 20 hours is great. I like the "jack" FMs; then when I get tired I like to flip back to upbeat DJS, young adults and phone pranks on top40's or alt rockers. Just depends. —Brice |
