Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 10:55 AM Not to bust on you DL and feel free not to answer--but why are you not living in Belltown or in the student slums around the U? I know financial aid sucks when you and a parent live in the same city, but there's gotta be a way. Back in the dark ages when I was in school I rented a room for $200 a month. My brother rented a room in NYC for $230 a month a few years ago. Try this

Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 11:45 AM $200 a month is hard when you kinda, uh, don't have a job. (Well, technically I'm still employed at the notetaking job, but it's not guaranteed that I'll be doing it this fall, and it isn't anywhere near enough to pay rent anyway.) I'm filling out applications, but no responses so far... —Dark Laith |

Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 12:48 PM Student slums/ghettos are named not for the quality but for the % of students living in them. The ones in Eugene have riots every few weekends. It's great. DL--$200 is like 5 BJ's a month. As Adam would say.... —bguirk |

Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 8:52 PM Edited Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 8:52 PM Whenever my father asks me what the latest Eugene student riots were about, I tell him, "Protesting the existence of beer." Or "Against Dumpsters being right-side-up and not on fire." I think the frequency is more like 2-3 times a year, though. A couple of Halloweens ago they offered a free midnight breakfast bar at the college in an attempt to pacify drunks and avert another Halloween riot. Nothing like being bribed with institutional scrambled eggs. edit: spelling —Dubious Merit |

Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 10:27 PM I always set my VCR, even when the show is comfortably after work. It seems that every time I think I don't need to set the VCR, I get asked to stay late at work. Even on my days off, I don't want to be someone who thinks "Aw, crap, I gotta get home to my TV," and miss fun happenings in actual life. N.B. There are no fun happenings in my actual life. —Dubious Merit |

LMAO. 2-3 times a year sounds about right which would make it once per quarter. I was lumping the brawls at the frat houses in with the full fledged riots which was wrong. I haven't been back for anything other than breakfast for 3-4 years now so my information is out of date. —bguirk |

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 11:18 PM I lived in Eugene while attending school; now I live in Springfield. It's about the same, just cheaper and with more Hispanics. Instead of hippies, there are bums. I love the student exodus in the summer; I take the seats out of my car and go out of a night, cruising for free furniture. If I ever need dozens of cinder blocks, I know when to grab them. —Dubious Merit |

Thursday, August 11, 2005 at 9:09 AM Don't forget the pallets. My Eugene/Springfield era was back when they had psased the anti-gay city ordinance. We used to head out to Springfield all femmed/butched up to scare the locals. Years later I realize they've seen it all before. Springfield had the nice aquatic center. —bguirk |
