Monday, August 8, 2005 at 11:06 PM Sorry everybody, there's only three threads currently on the topic of Adam's new comedy central show. The quota of threads to topic on this board is a minimum of 4:1. I could tell he didn't really want to do the comedy central show. :) —ZT-In-Exile |

Monday, August 8, 2005 at 11:37 PM I get uncomfortable just watching him on tv. Even on Kimmel his jokes and rants fall flat because the live audience usually doesn't know anything about his rants and they have a tendency to either not laugh at the right time or interrupt his rants. but that is just me —Literally a millionaire |

Monday, August 8, 2005 at 11:47 PM Four-to-one is a solid ratio. I'd like to see that number go up to the same frequency as Adam recommends for teenage masturbatory acts per day: 10 or 11 to 1. —clodhopper |

Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 4:34 PM Yea, but it was pretty bad. Adam is funny on the radio. It's too awkward to say something and wait for the audience to laugh or not laugh. On the radio, nobody needs to respond and Ada, just goes through what he has to say. R.I.P. Too Late —Faygo |

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 2:57 AM Caught the opening show and found it painful to watch. I'm a huge fan too. Tony and Faygo got it right, I think. For some reason, I can't figure out why, he doesn't click on Kimmel either. He's hilarious, but the audience on Kimmel doesn't seem to know what to make of him. But Too Late's audience was another story. THey laughed TOO HARD. It was obvious they were being canned or plodded into laughing. Some of Adam's rants aren't always knee-slapping funny. Some are just funny, some are a scream. But on the show, the audience roared like crazy after every joke, or aside. If they could fix the annoying audience fake laugh, it might work. —Dodgerdude |

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 5:53 AM Edited Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 6:30 AM As someone who thinks Adam's a genius, I gotta say his new show (thus far, anyway) is a train wreck. Radio, especially Loveline, is his best forum. Adam's appearances on Kimmel tend to be disappointing too. I think the probem is two-fold: (1) Adam needs time to stretch out and make his point. His humor does not work as well within the limited time constraints television presents. (2) Adam needs a good straight man. Drew is the best for this purpose. Adam with Jimmy doesn't cut it -- Jimmy's no straight man. Adam alone is like Costello without Abbott, or Lewis without Martin -- something is missing and he just isn't firing on all cylinders. (For you junior college students, those are old-time comedy teams.) Having said all this, I do hope the show succeeds -- the Ace Man deserves this and is talented enough to pull it off. Jimmy was a little shaky and uncomfortable during the first several months of his show but managed to settle down and get a good rhythm and now the show works. If Comedy Central gives Adam some time and if they fine tune the show a bit it could become a great program. —Brill0Head |

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 11:20 AM Yeah, I've long wondered why he does so poorly on TV. Of course, he isn't particularly strong an Stern either, so maybe Loveline is his perfect setting and everything else will be a bit of a let-down for his hardcore audience. I remember some 'man in the street' stuff he did back for the Man Show (not a fan) that were HILARIOUS. I remember one where he was in a hardware store harassing customers and it was one of the funniest bits I've ever seen. Carolla just needs to get with the improvisational settings and lose the scripted stuff, which make him seem very stiff and uncomfortable. And a bit waste of his talent. I think he's the funniest person in the media, but clearly only in the right setting. He should do more random stuff for his show: short skits, low budget video of him at home yelling at his workers, and AT LEAST half of the show should be man in the street type stuff. He could infiltrate conventions, harass people in stores, have a small DV cam follow him around to car washes, furniture stores, car sales lots, etc... But him alone on stage with no context doesn't work! Sucks, cuz I love his humor, but retread LoveLine jags don't fly on TV. He needs to make use of his super quick wit and reactive genius IN CONTEXT to something or he doesn't come accross as funny. And what's with his sweaty face?! I thought he had an operation to clear that up, didn't he? Still looks sweaty under those lights. More powder! Skeeter —skeeter |

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 11:36 AM It's funny that we lot seem to be much harder on the Aceman than the "general" TV going public (as I am observing from various other message boards and my friends). Most people seem to like the show for the most part. I am hearing lots of comments like "No talk show has ever gotten it right in the first month, this was rough, but pretty good." People seem to really like the prepared bits, especially "Adam explains to 1780's guy. As Faygo pointed out in another thread, Adam does have a lot TV experience, but as I failed to respond, I think this is really different from those other shows. Man Show was all prepared stuff for the most part. It's interesting that many people's favorite "Adam" part of that show was his hardware 'man on street' bit which was Adam doing what he is best at, improv. Loveline the show also had the adage of basically being loveline with cameras. That is a little different from having to carry a show. I know I didn't really explain what I am trying to convey in any way. That said, I think we are hard on the show because we all are intimately familiar with Adam at his peak. We know Adam at a 10 and compared to that, yes, the show is crap. But, if I step back and look at the show based on others in similar format, I am optimistic that the more he becomes comfortable in the position, the better it will become. Probably never going to be as good as the Daily Show or even the upcoming Colbert show...but still something I am going to tune into. —Ovid |

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 2:03 PM Hey guys... good thread. I think Adam would be much better off without an audience of any kind. Howard Stern is the same way in front of a bunch of people... he's awkward. But Howard's E-show, which is basically just a video feed of the set, is good. Why doesn't Comedy Central just tape Adam & Drew doing there stuff on the radio, and put it on TV? —Josh |
