Constantine, Adam's nemesis...

After hearing Constantine, he very much comes off like a used car salesman to me. So contrived and plastic sounding, loves to use words and phrases like "honestly" and "so glad" and "i'm so excited for (whoever)". UUGGHHH....

His band blows too. American Idol has him by the balls, he can't really have an opinion on stuff, at least on national radio. Did ya know American Idol takes a cut from all of the idols or participants careers for up to four years after they break into the biz? Seems only fair though.

^ Exactly. Bands/singers often complain about unfair initial contracts and such ("They took advantage of me"), but it's fair considering the trade off: you get exposure and build a fan base because they promote and market you. They have the advantage, why shouldn't they take it?

If you are truly talented then you will outlast your original contract restraints and then the power will shift to you and suddenly the performer has the advantage (and they'll damn sure take it). The key here is proving yourself as a viable performer, not just someone with enough marginal talent or charisma to ride the wave of exposure until it crests.

Either way enjoy the ride, because fair or unfair, talented or not, you're in a place few ever get the opportunity to experience. Just quit the whining.

I didn't say he did. Darkfloyd merely mentioned the fact that Idol (justifiably) takes a chunk from their performers and it brought to mind the many, many bands and bleeding heart supporters who constantly rail against the recording industry for "taking advantage" of bands/singers and getting rich in the process.

The problem with a lot of these Idol contestants and winners is that they haven't been able to seprate themselves completely from American Idol. They simply can't ride that wave of popularity because as soon as a new season comes along, they're old news. Who has heard anything out of Ruben Studdard lately? American Idol is a mixed blessing at best and I'd be surprised to see any of these performers emerge as artists that outlive their vehicle to success.

Kelly Clarkson seems to be doing a good job, but she'll likely be the exception not the rule.

Then again they each generally crank out at least one or two hit singles before fading back into obscurity. But that's not really much different than any other "legitimate" musical act.

The majority of acts fall into the one (or two) hit wonder category. It's rare for any band/singer to still be as popular with their follow up to their debut or breakthrough album, let alone make a decade spanning career out of it.

How can anyone try and be a legitimate singer and go on American Idol. It's just sort of a lottery for people with dubious talent. It represents the worst trends in both television and music today. I guess I think music shouldn't just be about record contracts and #1 viedos on MTV. Oh well. Adam has horrible taste in TV shows.

It's just sort of a lottery for people with dubious talent.

That pretty much describes the recording industry as a whole. For instance, you can't tell me that anyone of the people on American Idol are any more or less lucky or legitimate than someone like Britney Spears or Ashlee Simpson. Those two are studio creations with dubious (at best) singing ability that likely wouldn't have made it past the opening rounds of a "talent" competition.

And that lottery for those not worthy can also extend to acting, writing and anything else that is a part of the pop culture machine.

Bottom line is if you can get people to respond and, more importantly, spend money on you, then you ARE viable and legitimate regardless of talent - which is highly subjective anyway. Conversely, once you stop producing money for yourself or the powers that be, you are no longer viable and in some cases no longer legitimate.

It'd be nice if only talented people rose to the tops of the movie/TV/publishing/recording world, but we all know that's not the case.

I do think that the people who are on American Idol (well, the finals) are very talented. How can you say that they aren't legitimate singers? Then what would you call legitimate singers? They want to sing and make a living doing it and if they are good, then American Idol is a great way to get exposure. This is why I like American Idol more than any other reality show. The people who get the most exposure (William Hung is an exception) get it because of their talent, not because they are willing to take their clothes off an act like an asshole.

Well, I say "not legimate" because they sing more to pay the bills than to be artists. They don't write their own songs, and most seem to be vapid and soulless. Kelly Clarkson is no Billie Holiday.

They COULD write their own songs, but not while they are on the show because they have to sing songs according to the categories given. Aaaand Bo Bice writes his own songs. He seems like a cool hippy dude.

Exactly, look at a guy like Dan from the Dan Band. He was discovered singing karaoke. Is he more legitimate than Bo Bice? Sadly many people would probably think so because he wasn't in some contest.

The only people on American Idol who I don't like or respect are the ones who make comments such as "this is my only shot." Those are the ones who don't deserve it in my opinion because then it is nothing more than a lazy attempt to get famous. These are the ones with the lottery mentality of ‘I want riches and fame but I don't want to really work for it, so if this (relatively) easy path doesn't pan out, then I've got no other option.’

These are the same kinds of people who call in to Loveline to ask bands or Adam how they got to where they are. And they don’t want to hear the real answer which, in most cases, is work at it everyday until you catch a break.

A lot of the contestants are people doing anything and everything to get what they want, which is a singing career. So what if it happens to be that they end up going on a reality show to get achieve their goal, if they can sing and people like them then that is its own validation.

I have never actually watched the show, but, I seem to remember the first or second year someone was disqualified because it came to light they had a record contract already, or were paid for some music, and that the show was only for "unsigned artists." But when that guy was on Loveline the other night, he said his band had a record out before he was even on the show. Did they change the rules or what?

I don't remember anyone being kicked out because they had already signed with someone. People have gotten kicked out for various illegal activities. When Constantine recorded the album, his band wasn't signed. It wasn't until after he got on the show that a record label decided to put out his album. Also, he handed over all of the rights to his songs to the rest of his band.

The band didn't seem very good though. Constantine would be better as a solo artist.

I seem to recall that her stock went up in spite of this news.

BTW, I just watched the "Greatest Americans" show on DC, and both Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard provided their insightful opinions on this matter.
Clay: "Without Thomas Edison, I'd look something like this.." *reaches down and turns off light, laughing like some effeminate butt-pirate.

If I wanted Clay's opinions on interior decorating or skin care that would be one thing...

You can name a bunch of actually talented people who wouldn't make it on American Idol. Better to make a list of untalented people who would make it. The Simpson sisters, Britney, various "Latin Hearthrobs...."

bguirk

mandeemoo22

+

Thursday, June 16, 2005 at 9:56 AM

I definitely don't think Britney or Ashlee Simpson would make it. I mean, its pretty obvious that they can't sing. However, if Jessica Simpson and the Latinos made it, it would be because they actually are talented. And Darwin, I disagree with you as well because I think the singers you mentioned could actually do pretty well on American Idol. AAAAAND another thing, on American Idol they are trying to find the most marketable pop singer and some of those bands don't even fit the category. If you are sitting here naming various people like that, then the show obviously isn't marketed for you.

Actually, that close to the stage, you get less of the house system than if you're back 15 rows or more. I could actually hear the drum kit over the house many times that night. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but it was surprising for sure.

PLus, I always wear ear plugs at shows. I had custom plugs made at a speecha dn hearing center. Theay fit my ear perfectly and allow for different dB filters to be used. 15, 25, or 30, I believe. I use 25 dB of cut almost exclusively.

That's really cool, Colin. I didn't know you could have customs that had different filtering abilities. I wear earplugs to help me sleep during the day in my noisy neighborhood. But maximun noise blockers. 33db's or something like that. I have definite hearing damage from years of abuse, but usually don't get close enough at concerts to need earplugs. Tenonitis(sp.?) sucks. One of my ears cuts out sometimes if I am at a small club and the band is too loud. Good times.
