Hey guys, long time reader first time poster. I need my sleep and staying up till midnight takes that away from me. I finally broke down and did something about it. I have a little setup that records loveline live from KNDD's stream, converts it, and puts it into a podcast. The result of my work can be seen here: http://loveline.afraid.org/. I'd appreciate it if a few people could try it out and even subscribe to the podcast to see how well it scales to more than 1 subscriber. Also, any input is welcome just email me loveline.podcast@gmail.com

I'd appreciate anyone that tries it to post here so I can gauge the popularity

thank you so much. I made one a couple months ago, and only did about a month's worth of shows, I got so sick of creating it. Please keep it up, if you can ;). Your setup sounds simpler than mine. I'd be for an .m4b format, so the file is bookmarkable on iPods.

No difference trailerfire.

Those of use that regularly change our smoke alarm batteries know that podcasting is all the rage.

Thanks for replying guys...

It's good to see that someone find this useful.

Anyways, if you guys don't already know what podcasting is, it's a great new way to keep up to date with regularly published audio content (which makes it perfect for a radio show like Loveline) - read more at Wikipedia.

Regarding conversion to M4b, I'm still looking for a reliable linux command line method of converting the audio to that format. If anyone knows a TRIED and TESTED method of doing this, let me know at loveline.podcast@gmail.com . Meanwhile Windows users can have downloaded podcast converted to m4b on their computer using Doppler Radio and Mac users also have a client with that ability (though i don't remember which).

There is a big difference between this new method and older ways of attaining the recordings. On the hub, you do get the same file, but is it automatically downloaded overnight and added+synced with your MP3 player so you can listen during your day? The beauty of podcasts is that you just "subscribe" to it and you will always get the latest episode the next morning without any added effort.

As always, questions and comments should be posted in response to this thread or emailed to loveline.podcast@gmail.com

It's a great idea. Will you be starting with this sunday's show?

Thursday's and Wednesday's shows are already up on the podcast, in case you missed them. Sunday's show will be up probably 15min to 1hr after it is recorded (mp3 encoding takes a while and the time it takes depends on the load on the machine).

Sidenote to podcast users: Make sure to not delete your favorite shows, because shows older than 10 days are deleted.

I don't get it where are the shows and how do I put them on to my Ipod?

Go download a "podcatcher" (find one on google, i prefer "Doppler Radio" for windows)
Then, add the "feed" http://loveline.afraid.org/podcast/ to the catcher and set it up according to its documentation

Once you DL Doppler and start the installation, it should ask you with what program do you want to sync the audio files. You should choose iTunes. Once you add the URL for the Podcast, Doppler will automatically create a playlist called "Loveline Podcast - loveline.afraid.org" in iTunes. Simply sync and update your iPod. VoilĂ !

The great question...use an automated podcast system for loveline that takes all the work out of downloading, or use the DC hub to download commercial free shows?

This requires much cerebration.

Maybe there's a way to incorporate both together... does anyone know about a command-line DC client? Theoretically it should be possible as long as the files are named consistently

Thanks.
You kick ass.

I look like a tool when I'm at the gym, on a treadmill, and I'm laughing my ass off because I'm listening to LoveLine on my iPod. But, I don't care!

We need to get high quality and commercial free shows on the Podcast. I would prefer simply downloading the good quality and CF shows off Colin's tracker and uploading them to my iPod than using the Podcast with lower quality shows with commercials.

i have an idea!

we can get together a group of volunteers to post the "good versions" whenever they get a chance (though volunteering for this would mean posting it before 5am pacific time or so, to give others time to download it from the cast). if it doesn't get posted, the automatically recorded version would still be there (better than nothing).

practically what would happen is this:
-show is automatically recorded and converted to mp3 (10pm-1am pacific time)
-if possible, volunteer removes the automatic file and replaces it with a high-quality edited version (1am-5am pacific time, the earlier the better)
-people download whichever version is on there at the time (since my script can already generate the correct enclosures for the actual XML file)

it's pretty complicated, but remember that the point is to be able to have last night's show during your day. if anyone is awake at those hours mentioned, and the hq version is already available by then, then why not? otherwise, we could also set up a secondary podcast that is 1 day behind that volunteers can update during the day... and if it is not updated, then people still get the recorded version...

wow that was a long post. what do you guys think?

p.s. i got an email and verified that the file shows up as being only 1 hour in certain versions of windows media player. i did verify they work fine in itunes though.

You are performing an excellent (and much needed) service. We all thank you for your daily podcast of loveline (the best radio show ever).

Thanks :)

People have been suggesting higher quality or cut-out commercials. This is not really possible to have if you want it the very next morning ready to take with you. Thanks for your suggestions though.

Is there a way to combine podcasting and bittorrent, so as to reduce the load on the server? seems that there should be. sorry for the uber-nerdy technical talk here... let me try to make up for it for those whom i lost with that jargon...

BOOBS!!

anyway, if there is some way to do that, it would be really cool, but i cant find anything good on the net about anyone else doing that.

I checked the FAQ and saw that this is the second Podcast. I don't suppose anyone is Podcasting high-quality commercial-free?

regarding exceeded bandwidth limit, it has now been taken off since i payed for more. i didn't expect this to become so popular. sorry about the downtime, from now on don't hesitate to shoot me an email and tell me if problems show up, as i don't check this forum very often.

"I checked the FAQ and saw that this is the second Podcast. I don't suppose anyone is Podcasting high-quality commercial-free?"

haha, as i said before, a "live" podcast that is hq and commercial-free would not be possible. maybe 1 day delay, but live would be impossible
