Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at 9:31 PM Edited Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at 9:33 PM Could this perhaps be women (girls) pretending not to know the answer? Either for fear of being wrong, or for showing up the guy asking? Is stupid the new cute? I have noticed a lot of Paris Hilton clones running around lately. Germany and Japan should be pretty easy. One was nuked, the other spawned the holocaust industry. I would give that someone might not be sure where to place Russia or to overlook Italy. On the good side, well, Americans are going to think that it was only Americans, maybe England. Only a Canadian is going to know we participated in D-Day (take Band of Brothers as an example - the Americans did it all). Other colonies will certainly be overlooked (Australia, New Zealand, New Foundland) as well as the displaced soldiers of France, Holland, and Belgium that operated out of the UK. It is not like we are asking people to explain concepts like the Maginot line. I guess this is what happed when you do not have Hogan's Heros on reruns. Maybe we need a simpler question. "What 'war' did MASH take place during?" Do you think they would pick Vietnam, Korea, or WW2? —Laxdude |

Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 12:50 AM I think people lionize WWII so much because there will never be another war like it...ever. The technology was just at the threshhold of being radically devastating with the dropping of the atomic bombs. Sure, there has been Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq, but that's just a superpower unleashing its conventional arsenal on small nations (with varying results.) Now instead of other superpowers, we have angry Ahmed. Moreover, chicks especially need to break it down because wars aren't getting any less complex. The female area of the brain that stores useless crap about what other chicks wear or do should be vacated. —Mahalo |

I still don't know. My guess before I google it will be 12/7/1942. I know my honors American History book had a really lame 20th Century section. Most American History classes focus on the birth of the nation and the Civil War. Everything following is about industry. Some pretty amazing shit happened in the 20th century--civil rights, 2 World Wars, nuclear proliferation, containment of communism, Kenny G....It'd be interesting if someone wrote a history book that started at the end and went to the beginning. There's your PhD thesis history majors. *Edit*: Damn. Off by a year. —bguirk |

Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 10:44 AM I encourage everyone to watch the lovely new show, "Beauty and the Geek" every Wednesday night. I watched the second half of the show last night, and I saw beautiful girls trying to answer tough questoins like, "What former President is on the dollar bill?" "Who is the Prime Minister of England?" "Who was Al Gore's running mate in 2000?" "What former President used to be Governor of Arkansas?" and my favorite "Who was President during the Civil War?" Lo and behold, the two women only got one question correct (Q #1). Guesses for the other questions established that "Robinson" was VP, Hoover was in the White House during the War, and Bush is from Arkansas. Pure genius. —OneNutAaron |

Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 12:11 PM Perhaps you need to try different breeds of girls. Ugly girls or angry feminsts with glasses or classy negroes like me. I knew about everything that has been discussed in this thread so far-and I went to community college by the way-before I went to college. Assorted 'partisans' often liberated alot of towns from axis power troops/fascists. Then US/allied forces would re-'liberate' these already liberated places because higher-ups were uncomfortable with often socialistesqe partisans in charge, they would sometimes install ex-fascists and quasi-fascists(now under the allies thumb, though)as mayors in place. I know people don't like to hear that and I'm a left-wing cunt from outta space for bringing it up but it happened quite a bit in some places. —lundy |

Or how about the journalists being imprisoned in Sudan as we speak? 1. Catholics aren't enduring too much bullshit these days in NI ever since the Good Friday Agreement between the Unionist Ulsterites and the Sinn Fein came into effect around 2000. There have been back and forths about whether the IRA was going to disarm or not, but overall the situation is contained and is at the political, rather than military, level. Catholics may still face some discrimination from the Protestant majority, but at least now it's formally outlawed as opposed to the '60s. 2. Journalists being imprisoned in Sudan are the least of Sudan's problems. Until the fucking Arab janjaweed militias and politicians are brought to justice not only for the ethnic cleansing, rape, murder, and destruction in Darfur but also for their brutal and atrocious pillaging of the Christian/animist south, it's always going to be a mess. It's funny how the Middle East is up in arms about the Israeli-Palestinian situation regarding forced ethnic cleansing but probably hasn't even heard of Darfur. PS - Oh, and the obsession over WWII isn't just about history, it's about purpose. I think a lot of people who are fascinated with the war long to imagine a time when they could completely and totally support some large, over-arching goal like the destruction of the Axis. Back when right was right and wrong was wrong. Sure, we bombed German cities and imprisoned Japanese-Americans, but never before or since really has a time been so easily filled with believable absolutes. —Ganthet |

Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 12:31 PM Lundy - yeah, that is just wrong! (stomps foot like a little girl). Because the Allies had no reason to worry about the pendulum swinging too far in the other direction. It's not like people just trying to survive (and then being tagged as collaborators) were killed, shaved bald, expelled, or raped again...this time by the 'good guys'. Just because they were liberated from Nazi control does not mean they were Liberated by people who were not just as dangerous. All too often the real threat that Communism presented is just written off as McCarthyesque scare tactics. —Laxdude |

Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 3:13 PM cemetrygatecrasher, personal beliefs do not excuse ignorance. I, for one, dislike wars but it's silly to ignore the facts surrounding them. And I think ignoring the technology aspect translates into not being interested in the feats of engineering and science. Knowing the intimate details of every weapon and vehicle is not important; knowing that ballistic missiles and fission bombs were being developed probably is. Also, those other events you mentioned need not be known at the exclusion of basic WWII knowledge (like Dark Laith said.) —Mahalo |

Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 8:33 PM The smartest statement on this whole thread: >who was the prez during civil war? guy: of which side? He's right, of course. Both sides had a president. If he didn't blow which side Russia fought for in WWII, I'd say this was an example of the interviewee being smarter than the interrogator who's trying to make him look stupid. —Rudiger |

Maybe questions about Little House on the Prairie? I am probably dating myself...the chicks at school went nuts for that show - just like my older sister. —Laxdude |

Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 9:38 PM That dosen't really count because those 2 guys are obviously gay. —Villalovos Yeah, but not really. If he didn't blow which side Russia fought for in WWII, I'd say this was an example of the interviewee being smarter than the interrogator who's trying to make him look stupid. That is just false information. I was not trying to make him look stupid whatsoever. In fact, I was pretty sure that he knew the answer to these questions. He also isn't smarter than me. I am aware that there were two sides in the civil war and they each had their own president (Confederation: Jefferson Davis). —mandeemoo22 |

Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 9:51 PM The fact I know Jefferson Davis was the President of the Confederate States can be directly traced back to the many Scooby Doo episodes that had them finding a cache of Confederate Dollars. But I am a Canadian...we did not really cover the American Civil war in much detail, just enough to be told that it wasn't really about slavery...but like Apu, I have since 'learned' better. —Laxdude |

Wednesday, June 8, 2005 at 3:23 PM I don't think you're weird, but this is actually one of the (few) things that can vary significantly among guys. Some guys can't stand stupid chicks, others prefer stupid chicks, and the rest fall in between. Personally I lean to the side of "can't stand 'em". There's that dimness you can see in their eyes from too much thinking about what clothes and makeup to wear and not enough learning or awareness. I'd much rather have a 6.5 smart chick than a 9 that was stupid. (Although of course then we'd have to get into not wanting the chick to be too smart, since that would make me feel inferior and retarded, which I have enough of anyway, but let's not get into that...) —Dark Laith |

Wednesday, June 8, 2005 at 8:08 PM Men and Women are better at different things. Not knowing who the axis powers were makes you stupid, not knowing planes is irrelevant. I think the Japanese got theirs with the atomic bombs. Bombing Germany again is a retarded idea for any of you to take seriously, anyway. I prefer smarter chicks to dumber ones. I think it's the same way as with self-esteem. If the chick has higher self-esteem and is into you, it's better. —Hashmeer Shashmeer |

Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 1:59 PM Edited Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 2:00 PM 2. Ganthet Speaking of Darfur, you should all check out this site, and email your congressmen. —zt-in-hell |

Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 9:03 PM I've never seen this thread before but does anyone else get the feeling Dr.J69s conversations are made up? DrJ69s: without looking it up Girl5: -laughs- can't and don't want to. why?
um, nobody says "-laughs-" on AIM or whatever instant messenger you use, -laughs- is usually used during an interview printed in a magazine or whatever. Wouldn't she say "haha" or "lol"? DrJ69s: name me what other countrires were on the U.S.'s side during World War Two and then name what countries where against us in World War Two.
There are like 10870897098 mistakes in that question. one even got mad at me because I never call her anymore.

Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at 11:54 PM about war plane names... adam is a model planes enthusiast, so to him, that's just basic and interesting knowledge. Like OOO said, a zealous baseball fanatic would think someone who doesn't know major players or coaches of teams is just dumb also. i knew since elem. school how many feet = yard and # of feet = mile, because i had FEMALE teachers who drove it into my head with endless math problems. —my dad lives In Israel? |
