Anyone else notice Adam almost never laughs at things guests say?

Leading up to Wednesday's show with Dave Atell Adam kept praising Atell saying how funny he was, but whenever Atell would say something funny, instead of laughing, Adam would usually try to either elaborate on what Atell said or to "one-up" him. Meanwhile, Atell laughed at a lot of what Adam said. Both were very funny. Adam does this a lot. Even when the guest says something genuinely funny, he almost never straight-out laughs. He may kinda giggle a little and then say "yeah, but..." and then add to what they said. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy things just the way they are, but it seems like after building up Dave Atell as being the one stand-up he thinks is truly funny, he could be polite enough to actually laugh at something the man said.

He saves all his laughing for one long burst whenever DAG is on.

I think Dave Atell was very conservative in what he was talking about on the radio that night. If you have ever heard of his CD "Skanks for the memories" he goes off. On national radio, I think he played it safe. Dave was probably tired too since, he's had just done Leno and I'm guessing a set at one of the local comedy clubs.

I was really looking forward to Dave Attel being on but he really didn't live up to my expectation. He was pretty quiet I thought and only speaking when asked a question for the most part.

Maybe if he had actually been in the studio with Drew & Adam it would have been different. They were also talking about the very sad Mitch Hedberg passing so that puts a damper on the comedy a lot.

Adam sometimes mentions his improv training, such as how when you do improv you learn phrases like "Yes and..." or "Not only that but..." The idea is that you take what somebody else on stage does and build on it (as opposed to stopping it in its tracks like Drew does). I think Adam's behavior with comedians may be for similar reasons. He's trying to bring the comedy, not necessarily show appreciation for the guest.

There was a show a long time ago with Jay Mohr where Jay gets pissed because he's throwing things out left and right and Adam doesn't laugh at all.

I didn't find Atell particularly funny this time nor the last time he was on the show. I have noticed, however, that when comedians roll into the studio, Adam usual ups his comedic game.

Maybe Adam feels threatened when other comedians come on the show, so he has to "overpower" them. Since he is the funny one, he has to make sure that some other guy doesn't just come on and be funnier than him. He tries to say how much he respects the comedian in order to divert attention from the fact that he is competing with them. Just a thought.

I know but he still threw in some funny lines here and there. But the point is Adam does this with most funny guests. I guess, like someone said, how he saves it up for DAG, maybe he finds certain people funnier than others, but the way he was building Atell up, it seemed like maybe he would have laughed at one thing Dave said. I think it is more that, as someone else also said, he is just competitive.

And how in heck, when quoting someone else, do you get the quote to appear in italics? Can't figure it out.

I thought the part where Drew was bagging on him for needing to get into recovery was pretty funny. Does that count?

I find Dave Attel to be hilarious. I love his show. However, I would put Dave Chappelle as the funniest stand up, right now. Attel was funnier on this appearance than last time, but still seems somewhat reserved for a show where the hosts joke about having anal sex in the bathroom.

I've noticed Adam is very competetive. The only time he lets his guard down is when a dear, dear friend comes on the show (i.e. DAG, Kathy Griffin, etc.). I've also noticed Conan O'Brien does this, but he laughs.

I just heard the show today and Adam definately laughed at things that Dave said. It wasn't uproarious laughter, but nothing that Dave said was that hilarious. He was funny though and Adam did laugh. But Drew has mentioned it, Adam hates being upstaged on his home turf. Considering that urge, he was pretty nice to Dave.

Because 95% of what the guests say aren't funny?

Sure, Adam was hyping Dave 'cos he's funny on Insomniac and his stand-ups as well but the majority... or should I say ALL of the previous Loveline comedian guests aren't funny except for maybe DAG which some of us thinks is annoying (and therefore, not funny).

But Adam does laugh a lot if the guests say something that really is funny. You have to remember that Adam is a comedic genius so anything that's funny to you or me isn't probably all that funny to the Aceman.

Listen to the "Saw" guys if you haven't already. Count how many times Adam laughs during that show. Or when they had Sum 41 I think and Steve-O or whatshisname was talking.

j4, I think I'm a member of both groups- I fine DAG both funny and annoying. I think Adam's laughter in response to DAG is a reaction to the entire situation rather than just DAG. It seems to me like nervous laughter- like when someone is being obnoxious in a group and making others uncomfortable, it can be easy to laugh at the entire dynamic, almost like a defense mechanism. It would be more akward if Adam DIDN'T laugh. Drunken DAG yelling at Drew, acting hysterically, bouncing off the walls and being paranoid at what Drew is "reading" into him. How else can you react in that scenario? It also seems as though Adam brings up racial humor when DAG is laying into Drew, which stops his rants and deflects the conversation. Christ, I get drained listening to that whole situation, and I'm not even in the studio. Anyone have thoughts?

I'm kind of on the same path as you, but, I think that Adam and DAG have a special relationship, as do Adam and Drew. DAG is one of Adam's dear dear dear dear friends, and although I agree with Adam's defending Drew in a roundabout way, I also think that Adam and DAG connect on a different level. I don't see the nervous laughter that you describe, but just them having like a private joke, that Drew and the rest of most of us, just don't get. I'll never forget DAG's first doing of the rough trade sex, ending with him snoring, and Adam, Drew, and myself laughing so hard we couldn't breathe.

Don't think other stand ups are funny on the show? Check out Will Sasso, Patton Oswalt & Brian Posehm, and Kathy Griffin. Darrell Hammond and Andy Dick are good for laughs too. Dave Atell had been on before and was kind of out of it that time too.

Kathy Griffin? Ummmm, well the rest I agree with you, plus don't forget Sarah Silverman. They aren't standups, but I thought Tina Fey, Tim Meadows, and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog were all very funny.

Anyone seen Patton's recent stand-up? (The one with the midget clip from his LL appearence) HEE-LARIOUS. "Sribbly Bibbly Dooo! Ted Nugent was deflecting bullets with the sheer power of his ROCKIN'"
Know what'd blow their minds? We'll hide a tiny mouse with pants in one of these cupboards. But which cupboard is he in? They'll be so busy thinkin' about that they won't have TIME to think about the war.
Sorry, I probably basterdized the hell out of that.

EDIT: Has Michael Ian Black been a guest? I know he appeared on the Celebrity Guest thread, but I think that guy would mesh well with Adam/Drew

Those were all off the top of my head. I don't think Kathy Griffin is funny stand up wise, but it tends to be a good show when she's on. Everyone you mentioned were awesome as well. I'll throw Andy Richter in there too--not quite a stand up, but close enough.

Has Insomniac been cancelled? I haven't seen that show in AGES, and I am an avid Comedy Central sunday night stoner (nothing else is on).... Kudos for the new show they've snagged "con" about as funny as things get in post "jackass" era, but... where is Insomniac?

Suppose I'll look up comedy central and bitch at them instead of blowing hard, here... but still.
