I was just on the fox website looking for the Point Pleasant site when I saw an ad for Volcano High... starring Snoop Doggy Dogg? Now I like Snoop as much as any celebrity I've never met and whatever, but I saw Volcano High last year and he wasn't in it, nigga don't even speak Korean.
The website seems to be openly recognising that this is a remake of a foreign movie, but why does Hollywood constantly remake foreign movies?
An exhaustive list would take hours to compile. Hollywood steals everything, just about every movie they make is an adaption of some existing piece of art, foreign or otherwise.
I suggested that Hollywood does this because the population of North America is of base intelligence. My brother suggested back that the government has a policy of creating dissent among the brotherhood of man in order to reinforce the military mindset. I mean, how are you going to shoot arabs and east-asians and south americans and africans if you see them as your fellow man? If you are laughing at a movie idol one day and have to shoot someone that looks just like him the next?
Regardless of the cause of it, the cultural imperialism of the USA is revolting and pathetic. It just stinks of propaganda and mental illness.
If movie making ever becomes cheap, which I suspect it should do any day now, people could make good movies everywhere. That would be nice.

"My brother suggested back that the government has a policy of creating dissent among the brotherhood of man in order to reinforce the military mindset." - MajandraFan

Uh no, the government has nothing to do with Hollywood movies - not that don't wish they did. Tell your brother to put down the bong, the paranoia is seeping in.

The base intelligence theory isn't too far off (how else to explain mind-numbingly dumb 'hit' movies like 'Fish Tale,' 'Saw,' 'National Treasure,' 'Diary of a Mad Black Woman' and anything involving Ashton Kutcher.) But it's not confined to North America, I'd say it's a common trait of most humans. And the same mass-produced movies you probably hate in America play quite well overseas.

But you're overlooking the main reason for movies to play it safe: money. Filming and marketing a studio movie costs ridiculous amounts of money and many don't make it back. But by using material with some familiarity they don't have to work quite as hard to get their idea across. There's a built in audience.

Besides I believe it was good old Will Shakespeare who said that there is nothing new under the sun. All stories have been told, it's now just a matter of trying to tell them again in slightly different ways.

Movies are already relatively cheap to make (I'm making a short film now with a DV camera and a Mac) and these 'home movies' are actually starting to make it into theaters (see 'Open Water.') But many of those will still be derivative because the same base intelligent people watching movies will to a large extent be the ones making them. So if you're already down on the population, how can those be the same people you expect to lead some sort of cultural revolution?

If Americans were really as bad as people say we are (read: as “evil”) then there wouldn’t be anyone around to complain about us, because we would have already slaughtered all foreign assholes.

However, Beat it! has made a great, well thought out, post. Indeed, almost all humans are stupid, with the exception of a few (yeah, I’m one of the exceptions, unfortunately MajandraFan, you’re not). They basically just walk around blind to their own biases, and biological drives their entire lives.

Brotherhood of man? HA! I guess that means all cultures are equal, and we can’t make any judgments, nope, none at all.

Female circumcision is A-Okay with us.

So is the fact that many cultures around the world like to have sex with young boys (this is a cultural thing with them, not a perversion like it is in the U.S.).

Women in the workplace? No way! Get back in the tent and do a “woman’s” job, or you’ll be beaten. At least that’s the way it is in many middle eastern countries. But that’s okay too, we can’t judge, it is after all a

They're call Indie films. There's a whole channel devoted to those movies.

But no, you're pretty much wrong. Everything in film making is expensive from the cameras to the editing equipment to the talent. Don't expect to see a movie with any production value to ever cost less than six figures--ever.

That's a notable exception. If you're starting from scratch, you'll need about that much to get the equipment you'll need. I know people can be creative, but the idea that people will one day make qualities movies dirt cheap is silly. The barrier is less technology and more the ability to actually make a quality movie--few people can do it.

"Uh no, the government has nothing to do with Hollywood movies - not that don't wish they did. Tell your brother to put down the bong, the paranoia is seeping in." - Beat It!

Sorry, the MPAA is not a government body, my bad.

"The base intelligence theory isn't too far off (how else to explain mind-numbingly dumb 'hit' movies like 'Fish Tale,' 'Saw,' 'National Treasure,' 'Diary of a Mad Black Woman' and anything involving Ashton Kutcher.) But it's not confined to North America, I'd say it's a common trait of most humans. And the same mass-produced movies you probably hate in America play quite well overseas." - Beat It!

No, I was suggesting that only North America has stupid people. We're all geniuses out here, looking and laughing and pointing at you all like you're fish in a fishtank or whatever. The same mass-produced movies DO play well overseas, at the expense of good non-US movies and honestly at the expense of bad non-US ones too, but I'm not so upset about missing those. And if you think that getting them on DVD makes up for seeing them in the theatre, you're a cockslaughterer.

"But you're overlooking the main reason for movies to play it safe: money. Filming and marketing a studio movie costs ridiculous amounts of money and many don't make it back. But by using material with some familiarity they don't have to work quite as hard to get their idea across. There's a built in audience." - Beat It!

Huh? That is not the main reason, it's the same reason as stupidity. Why is there a built-in audience? Why do dull plagiaristic retarded movies equal playing it safe?

"Besides I believe it was good old Will Shakespeare who said that there is nothing new under the sun. All stories have been told, it's now just a matter of trying to tell them again in slightly different ways." - Beat It!

Yes, that is why he did so many plays featuring the juxtaposition of the automative industry in modern Japan with the nuclear holocaust of 1945. Because nothing new ever happens. Fuck I hate you goddamn smart people, always thinking you know shit.

Oh wait, I don't seriously expect Utopia. I just forgot the sarcasm html.

"So are you a Mexican? If not, do you live in North America and if so why?" - Beat It!

I was thinking that Mexico was in North America. I guess southern Mexico is more or less central America, but the top half of central America is still North America since it ain't South America. Besides, most of California and Texas nevermind.
I am not a Mexican. I do not live in North America.

"If Americans were really as bad as people say we are (read: as “evil”) then there wouldn’t be anyone around to complain about us, because we would have already slaughtered all foreign assholes." - Masteel
You're not an all-encompassing American, you're not responsible for the crimes your nation is accused of (unless you count ignorant compliance as responsibility), evil is a mediaeval concept akin to holiness, and there is no profit in wholesale slaughter of everyone in the greater world.

"However, Beat it! has made a great, well thought out, post. Kevin Smith is better at acting than anything else he does. He is a fairly apt comedic actor, but not that fuck hot. Not one of his movies is good, and they're only not awful because of that Jason Mewes guy. Kevin Smith is also a severely repressed man with his desire for men, and this is reflected in his work and fanbase.

I won't do what everyone else on this board does and pick on your grammar. I will take you to task on Kevin Smith. For a homo, Kevin has had some hot beards. Joey Lauren Adams...His wife (who he has daughter with). I used to work for Miramax and got to meet Ms. Adams--she's super hot (although a chain smoker). I would almost call her a Waffle-Crapper. She graphicly described their sex life to an audience of college students whilst promoting Chaisng Amy. You've got Kevin pegged wrong.

Please pick on my grammar, I could use the lessons.
I'm not particularly being sarcastic. Also, if you're from North America you were schooled in mutant english so you don't know shit about it, but still go! tell me what I am doing wrong.
I would suggest that apart from an overbearingly conversational style of writing, the main reason people think my grammar is wrong is because the ideas I present are confusing and ambiguous. Boy I'm hungry.

Okay, Kevin writes all his movies. Jay, Silent Bob's hetero-life partner, is Kevin's mouth piece. Kevin really does think about guys when he masturbates, just not all the time. Kevin constantly boasts about how hot his wife is. Incessantly. Surely a hot beard is not an argument against the beard being a beard? It's so brown and bristly, it gives his face defintion, he's such a good man. No, but Tom Cruise had Nicole Kidman, then Penelope Cruz. If the girl was more homely it would be a little more suspicious, not less. If you had to pretend to go for vadge instead of cock, wouldn't you want a sparkling fresh one instead of an ordinary one? If a vegetarian has to eat meat, they would prefer a nice cut of veal instead of a cheap hamburger, even if their tongueth is ignorant.
Anyway, Kevin insists that Tom Cruise is a genuinely good actor, and that Ben Affleck is too. He probably thinks Brad Pitt is a great actor.
Don't get lost now. I didn't say Kevin was a homo, I said he has a repressed desire for men. A desire equal or greater to his desire for women.
He's a big comic book fan, he is severly obese despite being moderately intelligent.
There is so much evidence for Kevin Smith wanting cock, and none against. Oh wait, he has a child, so he can't want men. Cuz that's never happened, wife and kids to hide what you really want. Good point buddy!

His music is insane, and he's incredibly talented. Also not a surprise, his whole family has some chops. I'm more of a Winton fan, though. You sir, must work for a business that makes cameras and other video equipment--oh wait, you probably don't. Fortunately, I don't need to either to know the truth of the matter here.

A standard digital camera which I am taking out into the field to do remotes costs $2,700--and that's the low end. A tripod will add on several hundred, a computer with the proper non-linear software to edit the footage is several hundred dollars more--and I haven't included the massive hard drive space you'll need, the top notch equipment you'll have to use, and the devise to record from the tapes (they aren't that cheap either) to the computer. Linear editing, which is actually prefered by film makers, doesn't require this non-linear editing equipment, but oh yeah, it costs more.

So no, on this issue I know what I'm talking about and I'd wager you do not. The whole "they're just jacking up the prices even though making the equipment so cheap" argument doesn't work on me because I also know a few things about business and that there's a lot more in a company's cost structure than raw materials--which for electronics of this complexity, still aren't very cheap, not for the quality you need for broadcasting at least.

Rant on with your anti-capitalism, anti-Americanism lines and enjoy yourself. Don't pretend to know about things you know nothing about though.

I'm in college majoring in journalism. I'm required to learn about broadcasting. This is what I'm probably going to do with my life in one way or another. That's why I know it. It has nothing to do with omniscience or whatever snide comments you want to throw my way in place of legitimate criticism.

"Although you seem to think that the capitalism has something to do with the USA, and that the USA is America. Oh well."

The first time I read this comment, it made a lot more sense to me. Now it's actually laughable. Yes, I'd say say capitalism does have something to do with the United States. And yes, I would say the United States has something to do with America. (Namely, the United States is called "America" quite often.) So it really just looks like you argued for something as obvious as the sky is blue and tried to make it sound absurd. Good shit.

Now, I'm reasonable sure you mean that I implied capitalism is solely American and the United States is the only part of the two American continents. I implied neither thing. Hell, the cameras I'm using were designed in Japan and probably manufactured in Taiwan.

But please, continue. Your ramblings actually amuse me.

MajandraFan, you are a breath of fresh air (and when it blows, it "blows hard"). It's been a while since someone so steeped in their own narrow and angry mindset spewed such misguided rancor (by the way, where is SaveTheBabies?).

It's always a pleasure to see someone spouting the same tired rhetoric and paranoid ramblings about the mythical "Man" and evil America (and by 'America' I and most intelligent people mean the USA) using their wiles to dominate and control everyone. Fairy tales can be fun.

It seems you're just another insecure individual on the outside looking in, angry at all things popular for being so damn popular and stewing in your odiferous little corner of the world. Never understanding that not liking something that other people do is just as narrow-minded as only liking it for the same reason. But you surely have your little group where you only enjoy things that aren’t mainstream (and actually use terms like “selling out” in all sincerity), all dress alike, parrot the same ideas to each other and without a sense of irony denounce those you consider “followers.” Good times.

I'm not gonna get into most of your post because I don’t see the need to repeat myself, but I am interested in the first part where you wrote, "Sorry, the MPAA is not a government body, my bad." Now, since sarcasm is often hard to convey in type and you seem to only know America from afar, I'm going to assume that wasn't sincere. But no, the MPAA is in fact not a government group, they are independently run by several studio heads.
