There's an excellent book called 'Under The Banner of Heaven' which details a true-life murder of a young woman and her daughter by her husband's brothers due to their Fundamentalist Mormon views. It uses this as a jumping point to look into the rise of Mormonism and also the effect of plural marriage (which is now categorically denounced by the 'official' church but still practiced by the Fundamentalists).

Check out the damage and dysfunction common with having multiple wives and children and you'll get your argument why polygamy is only for the chaotic and deranged. And it makes you see just how nutty those Mormons (and for that matter all religious zealots or believers in fairy tales of that sort) really are.

And I'm guessing the 'someone' you were talking to was a guy. If so, try floating the idea of being a multiple husband to one wife and see if he's still so pro-polygamy.
