Depakote - Addictive

I've got a question for the forum - If someone is an active alcoholic is Depakote something safe to take? Can you get addicted to Depakote like you can to other drugs?

tey, call Walgreens and ask sweets...probably not a licensed one on here and life is too precious to chance a response from a novice

Or better yet, call Dr. Drew.

According to the few minutes of research I spent on Google, while Depakote can cause fatal liver and/or pancreas problems, it isn't necessarily addictive. Most addictive medications seem to fall under the category of painkillers or sleeping pills, but that's just anecdotal.

Of course, an addict can get addicted to anything, so, since this medication has harmful side effects, I imagine it ought to be used with care.

I have never heard Dr. Drew refer to this drug as addictive. In all his dealings on-air with bipolars and epileptics, I don't recall him cautioning them against taking Depakote for their symptoms. But all medication is experimental, and I seriously would recommend calling Dr. Drew if you can manage it, or talking to another doctor that you trust.

I plan on calling Dr. Drew and asking him, because I got the same answers from my google search. The only thing I saw that was suspect was that Depakote is known to be hard on the liver, and an alcoholic usually doesn't have the best liver in the world ;)

Thanks for the help.

I think there's one basic way to tell if it's addictive or not: does it cause some sort of thrill/arousal or other pleasant experience? If so, then yes.

About 10 years ago I used to take Depakote. I drank heavily and used IV drugs. I had blood tests every 4 weeks to test the level of Depakote and test my liver function. I eventually had to stop the Depakote because it was really screwing up my liver.

Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't be so hasty to just blame the Depakote.

Well, come ON Liz, a little boozing and a little shooting up, that never hurt anyone. Don't be so uptight, man.

I was just trying to relate my experience. FWIW I stopped the Depakote but kept up with the drinking and opiate use and my liver function returned to normal.

Duly noted. Depakote undoubtedly messes with liver function, as many medications do, but drinking and opiates don't help any.

This is true. FWIW I have been free of narcotics for 4.5 years. I still drink and smoke weed so I am not actually "sober" but it works for me.

Best of luck to you.

my guess is "Can still breathe, eat, and shit." Personally my standards are higher than that, but hey, we cannot judge.

Whats wrong with having a hobby? I believe that people can use drugs and alcohol and still lead productive lives.

I've never heard of Depakote as being addictive. It can cause heavy sedation if alcohol is consumed but that's about it.
