If the asians are a minority like the mexicans and the blacks, how come we don't see a lot of them on welfare? What's the difference, is it culture, attitude of frequency of orgasms?

My money's on attitude.

It's not merely attitude. The same Asian minorities that do very well in the United States do very poorly in countries like Japan (non-Japanese asians in Japan, that is). I'm trying to remember exactly where I learned an explanation for this, but there is one. (It also explains why blacks and hispanics don't do nearly as well.)

That is very true, clod. It's an issue discussed in Intro Psychology courses. The reason for this is social stereotyping and priming. Japanese immigrants in the US are stereotyped as relatively intelligent, highly motivated people. Conversely, Japanese immigrants in China are perceived in a different light, so they do not perform as well as Japanese immigrants in the US in certain areas. Social priming is also a reason for this. It has been demonstrated in experiments that in a group of test takers, if the proctor states before the examination a fact like "women perform poorly in this sort of examination," women tend to perform more poorly than a control group where this sort of social stereotype was not stated (i.e. there was no priming).

I tend to think that such priming would have the OPPOSITE effect on ME. (But I'm merely hypothesizing.)

I believe the reason for this is discrimination. whites-on-blacks racism in the 60's can't beat asian-on-asian discrimination. The chinese hate the japs, who hate the vietnamese, who hate the cambodians...

Speaking just about immigrants, the answer's pretty easy. Actually, I think Adam made this point, too. Anyone floating over from Mexico isn't necessarily too motivated, it was just a car-ride away, and now, here they are! (Also, you can factor in that most come from Catholic backgrounds, increasing the chances that they'll have more kids, thus making it harder to achieve real financial stability.) Asians, on the other hand (and my boss is Indian, as in from India), are already clearly more go-getters, because they are flying 1/2way across the world to start over, look for better things. So, that point, alone, makes them more motivated. Add onto that the fact that the average culture for the average Asian immigrant is less family-oriented, nmore goal-oriented, they know not to have too many kids, then there's the whole "honor" thing which would make them want to do everything they could to stay off any sort of public financial support. Blahblahblahblahblah.

But other non-Japanese Asians who go to Japan--another Asian country as economically strong as the United States--do NOT do well while people of the same ethnicity do better in the United States.

It's more than motivation, it's how the society responds to you. A Korean or Chinese is going to be a lot better off coming to the United States than Japan, even if everything else is the same.

Listen to the loveline episode where they had John Cho and Kow Pen(spelling?) on, they explain it.
