Starting a Movie Collection: Need Suggestions

foob2011

I am starting a movie collection and I need suggestions of classic movies to buy. By classic I don't necessarily mean what they play on Turner Classic Movies. My definition of classics ranges from Casablanca to Pulp Fiction.
So far I have:
Pulp Fiction
The Bourne Identity/Supremacy
The Manchurian Candidate
Collateral
Dr. Strangelove
Goodfellas
Boondock Saints
Scarface
Bullitt

I am thinking about:(already seen them)
Animal House
Casablanca
The Godfather
The Paper Chase

Possiblities that I haven't seen(are they worth screening at all?)
Raging Bull
Alien
Apocalypse Now
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
The Graduate
2001- A Space Odessey
Goldfinger

Goldfinger, definitely. Camp as camp can be. Classic? Yes. Also, I have to admit I really liked it, particularly the rah-rah bits with the fighter pilots (you'll understand when you see it).

What about The Princess Bride?

You should definitely see 2001 A Space Odyssey. I thought The Graduate was great too, so I'd recommend it.

You gotta have Ghostbusters.

I wouldn't call either of these movies classics, but I enjoy them both.

One is called "Falling Down" starring Michael Douglas as the typical white collar worker gone mad. It's downright hilarious at points.

The other is an old movie called "Fail Safe". It was on AMC last last night and it's a genuinely spooky movie about a nuclear crisis between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. It stars Henry Fonda and a delightfully evil Walter Matheau.

And Ferris Buehler's Day off ssssssssssssssucked. It was hands down the least funny movie I've ever seen. Pure 80's teen movie crap. That movie is disgustingly overrated, even if does glorify Chicago.

A must-have: Story of Ricky, also known as Ricky-Oh.

Not only is the scene from the Kilborn show in there (big guy literally crushes a guy's head by slap-crushing it between his hands), but there are many other moments like it, including my favourite:

Ricky the hero is fighting this muscle-bound prisoner. The prisoner knows he's losing so he slits his own stomach wide open and uses his own entrails to try to strangle Ricky. Classic moment in cinema!

Repo Man Good comedy, has a similar feel to Buckaroo Banzai or Ghostbusters. As far as I'm concerned, the only reason for Emilio Estevez' continuing existance.

I think The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is an insanely great movie, but you should get all three of the "Man with No Name" movies (A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More) if you're working on a collection.
You should watch at least one before you buy - I recommend the first, Fistfull, if for no other reason than it's shorter (TGTBATU is three hours) and it's a wonderful homage/ripoff of Yojimbo. I like the Leone westerns, but now that I've seen them several times I find myself fastforwarding through the long pans over Spain the American West. Beautiful country, but adds nothing to the plot.

A couple classics that get overlooked sometimes...

Peter Sellers Pink Panther Series (Strikes Back is best)

Platoon (Best war film next to Apocalypse Now)

Annie Hall (if you like Seinfeld or curb, it’s a must see)

Falling Down (which clodhopper mentioned, good time-piece)

Blood Simple (Great combination of video and audio, Coen’s first movie)

On the Waterfront (Best young Brando)

Psycho (best Hitchcock in my opinion)

A few I wouldn’t recommend watching although they seem to get props:

Easy Rider (just plain awful, Nicholson is the only redeeming quality)

Donnie Darko (decent attempt but overdone and over acclaimed)

A Street Car Named Desire (too censored, read Tennessee Williams’ play or watch On the Waterfront for a better early Brando)

Tootsie (not funny)

If I were you I’d get netflix instead of buying DVD's 1 by 1. The only two DVDs I own are Dr. Strangelove and MASH. I use netflix and rotating free month subscriptions to Walmart DVD rentals. I copy the ones I enjoy to DivX and return the rest. I go through 2-3 movies a day.

You can add in my vote for:
Donnie Darko
Fight Club
A Clockwork Orange

I absoloutely love True Romance, but I'm not sure what would make it "classic" in any way.

How can Kill Bill not be a classic? I'm also suggesting 28 Days Later and Trainspotting. Office Space would be "classic" in a similar vein with Clerks, I guess.

Rope? Gag. Talk about a hammy and melodramatic snoozefest. It has the acting quality of a Perry Mason episode along with several actors from the William Shatner school of delivering dialogue.

Some other suggestions:
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Chasing Amy (the only Kevin Smith flick worth watching unstoned even if it is, well, gay)
South Park movie
Training Day

And any DVD collection should have one or two foreign flicks just to impress, intimidate or provide a source of ridicule. So:
Eat Drink Man Woman (Taiwanese flick - a bit soap opera-ish)
Tu Mama Tambien (same comment as Chasing Amy only without Kevin Smith part)
Stalingrad (good war movie)
Abre los ojos (better than the US remake Vanilla Sky)
and if you can find the Indian remake of Star Wars, only with frequent musical numbers, then you'll have a solid day and a half worth of entertainment and giggles

I have a "high-end-of-Best Buy" home theater system and I've gone down the road of building a DVD collection and how now swung the other way.

DVD resolution is behind the curve. Higher-end TVs now support HD resolutions, and Blu-Ray and HD-DVD technology is shaking itself out. Congress has set 2006 as a deadline for HD to be the standard broadcast format (admittedly, a line in the sand). Point being: How long until we start seeing HD version of our favorite movies? IMO, soon enough to not drop a few hundred on DVDs.

  • VHS: 320x240
  • DVD: 720x480
  • HD: 1920x1080, 1280x720

Do you really need to own? I have about 12 DVDs that are my core must-own collection that I regularly watch because I love the films. I think that technology has changed the economy of movie-collecting to the point where it doesn't make sense to own movies that don't make your core collection. In my area (Seattle), Comcast has a limited but growing archive of on-demand movies that I can order and receive in HD for $3 a piece. Netflix-style rental houses are even cheaper. DVRs and Windows Media Center-type media management products are growing in marketshare. It comes down to personal preference, of course, but I just wish I hadn't bought the 30 second-tier DVDs that I sold on eBay for pennies on the dollar.

Yup. Even in my 30s, while I was staying with my mom and using her computer, I always cleared the history. It got to be such a habit that even once I had my OWN computer, I STILL always cleared it. That is until I was reminded that the history actually has a useful purpose.

I have pretty much every movie mentioned in this thread. My movie collection is over 450 (not including a bunch of television series). Just recently I decided to create back-ups after a few of my favorite flicks were damaged. If anyone is interested in back-ups, just drop me a line and I will send you a list of the movies I own.

I think the first thing they teach kids in "Computers as a Tool" or whatever they're making them learn in High School is to CLEAR THE HISTORY, CLEAR THE CACHE, CLEAR THE COOKIES.

There could be a filmstrip with a cartoon bear who gets grounded for looking at porn.

I shared a computer with my sister for a while, and it was disconcerting to pull down the history, looking for where I left off in some comic strip, and have to scroll through pages of URLs for Lord of the Rings slash fiction.

If there's anyone here who doesn't read Sexy Losers, they're really missing out. Even the name fits with Loveline.

Aside from the movie...

I think Goddess of Death has her picture on the 'member photo' thread (speaking of which, i need to find time to post mine)

Also, goths are not scary, most of them are very nice people if you get to know them. I think goth girls are hot, except the fat ones, but they are called Wicked or something. And I like Goddess of Death because she likes Interpol also.

Hey, didn't Adam say that "WICCAN" stood for "Weird Introverted Chubby Chicks And Nature?"
